  • The ability to customize garments for fit in the apparel industry is directly tied to the availability of comprehensive and accurate sets of anthropometrical data for each consumer. The data for apparel sizing systems is available from three major standard/ research organizations: ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), ISO (International Standard Organization), and NCHS (National Center for Health Statistics). However, these standards ignore various head shapes and are outdated for the development future head products. This creates a data gap an ever changing multi-cultural society such as the United Sates. Although major government and industry safety organizations recognize the importance of safety for head products, few studies were found to support their reasoning. The purpose of this study is to provide accurate head dimension data for developing safety head products by analyzing various head shapes in the United Sates which includes various ethnic backgrounds. This study was carried out on 105 males in the United States. Factor analysis, cluster analysis, Moreover, Duncan analysis were all used for analyzing various head shapes.

  • Vaccine nationalism and its implications to vaccine supply were a huge concern globally when COVID-19 vaccines first became available in 2021. At the time, vaccine supply was limited and it was difficult for many countries around the world to get adequate supply of the COVID-19 vaccine to inoculate their people. At its most benign, vaccine nationalism delayed the access of poorer countries to vaccines that are widely considered as the long-term solution to the COVID-19 pandemic. Poorer countries needed to resort to diplomacy to wrangle early access to vaccine supply from vaccine-producing countries like the United States, the United Kingdom and others. In particular, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte leveraged his country's Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United States and the need for Filipino nurses by countries like the United Kingdom and Germany to secure early access to COVID-19 vaccines. It all seems trivial now (in 2022) because of better global vaccine supply, but in 2021 when countries scrambled for access to scarce COVID-19 vaccines, Rodrigo Duterte leveraged the Philippines' assets to gain early access to vaccine supply.

  • This study aims to analyze research trends in blockchain-based Internet of Things focusing on the US, UK, and Korea. In Elsevier's Scopus, we collected 2,174 papers about blockchain-based Internet of Things published in from 2018 to 2023. Keyword frequency and centrality analysis were conducted on the abstracts of the collected papers. Through the obtained keyword frequencies, we tried to identify keywords with high frequency of occurrence and through centrality analysis, we tried to identify central research keywords for each country. As a result of the centrality analysis, research on blockchain, smart contracts, Internet of Things, security and personal information protection was conducted as the most central research in each country. The implication for Korea is that cybersecurity, authentication research appears to have been conducted with a lower centrality compared to the United States and the United Kingdom. Thus, it seems that intensive research related to cybersecurity and authentication is needed.

  • This study aimed to examine emo fashion, a very recent music-related fashion trend spreading fast amongst youths, and understand emo ideas and methods of expression for a greater understanding of contemporary youth sub-cultures and fashion trends. Documentary research, positive research and in-depth interviews were used throughout the study. 4 Korean emo bands and 4 U.S. emo bands were selected based on music chart rankings, and a total of 37 photographs from the bands' Internet websites were selected, and their clothes shown in the photographs were examined. 5 Korean emo band musicians were subjects of in-depth interviews, and they were asked about their emo culture, music, fashion, ideas and styles, and photographs were taken of the subjects and evaluated, too. Lastly, Korean and U.S. emo kids were studied through photographs, and comparatively analyzed. Both Korean and U.S. emo musicians wore slim silhouettes, skinny jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, black, studded belts and plastic-framed glasses. Korean fashion expressed a less depressive atmosphere with color and other details compared to the United States, and did not prefer dark black eye make-up, which United States emo style appeared to express frequently. Korean musicians' emo fashion was closer to other youth fashions, whereas U.S. emo fashion included more formal styles such as ruffled shirts and pin-striped vests. Korean emo kids wore clothes not much different from most Korean youths, but U.S. emo kids wore a lot of eye make-up and black t-shirts with graphic or skull prints, and had more geometrical hair styles, as if cut at home. The reasons for such differences were found to be a longer emo music and culture history in the United States leading to more elaborate fashion expressions and a difference in the states of mind, such as Korea pursuing to express love, and the United States pursuing loneliness.

  • This study examines spatial characteristics of residential distribution and occupational composition of Korean emmigrants who live in China, United States, and Japan. The data used are The Conditions of Korean Emmigrants published by Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1995. Analysis method used this data are as follows: 1) to clarify the tendency and spatial distribution of Korean emmigrants in each nation. 2) to grasp the residential distribution of Korean emmigrants in China, United States, and Japan where many Koreans have lived. 3) to analyze the occupational composition and its spatial characteristics of Korean emmigrants. The main findindgs obtained are summarized as follows: Farmer, forester, stock farmer, and fishery occupy over 50% of the employees of Korean emmigrants in China; traders and other employees occupy about three-fourths of the employees of Korean emmigrants in United States; and other employees occupy about 80% of the employees of Korean emmigrants in Japan. Therefore, the ratio of occupational composition of Korean emmigrants was influenced by emmigration motive, level of economic development of emmigration nation, restrictive condition for ethnic minority, and social status before emmigration etc. Specialized occupational composition in region where many Korean emmigrants in each nation lived was that the highest specialized occupation in region including primary city in population scale is trader; the highest specialized occupation in region including secondary city is manufacturing employee, and the highest specialized occupation in region including third city has transitional characteristics of each region including primary and secondary city. And professional occupation such as lawyer, doctor, religionist and educator appeared to the region including primary city. Finally, Korean emmigrants in United States and Japan contributed to the revitalization of inner city areas. And potential ethnic organization can be seen in church, mass media, and enterprise association in United States, but it can be seen in community shopping association in Japan, Because American society is based on Christianity but Japanese society is not.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate and compare the intellectual structure of cardiovascular research area in Korea and the United States. For the purpose of this study, a data set was collected; one journal Korean Circulation Journal is in Korea and two journals Circulation, and Circulation Research are in the United States. Based on the frequency of citation counts, 45 authors and 53 authors were selected for author co-citation analysis. By multidimensional scaling, clustering, and factor analyses, the results demonstrate that researchers in both countries commonly tend to work on several, rather than focus on certain sub-areas. In both countries, the core areas are revealed as 'cardiovascular disease treatment', 'cardiovascular disease diagnose', 'cardiovascular disease fundamentals', and 'cardiovascular disease preventives'. One of distinctive differences between two is that research in Korea is likely to focus on clinical medicines while research in the United States tends to be on fundamental medicines. While the area of 'Disorders of Rhythm' is revealed in Korea, 'Pharmacology of the Cardiovascular System' area is found in the United States. In addition, the sub-areas of fundamental medicines such as 'Epidemiology of Cardiovascular Disease', 'Biology', 'Biochemistry', 'Physiology' are revealed distinctively in the United States.

  • The Federal Arbitration Act and the States Arbitration acts of the United States approve that the an arbitration clause should be construed broadly and the Courts interpreted it broadly without being curbed by the written meaning of clause itself. The Courts also divided the interpretation of arbitration clause from the interpretation of other clauses of contract to approve the validity of arbitration clause and further expanded the scope of arbitration. However, the Arbitration Act of Korea does not specify a general principle about how an arbitration clause should be interpreted. The Supreme Court did not have a case yet but the lower courts kept their posture that an arbitration clause should be clear by resulting narrow interpretation and should be written to the extent that it excludes the power of courts from jurisdiction. As a result, there would be cases that arbitration is not permitted although an arbitration clause exists. The parties intending arbitration are frustrated about how to draft an arbitration clause into their agreement. There were the cases that the parties which took the prevailing position attempted to delay dispute resolutions by dragging disputes into litigation even if they agreed to resolve through arbitration, on the basis that an arbitration clause was incomplete. Although the arbitration statutes of the United States cannot apply in Korea, the way of their approaches to the interpretation of arbitration clause can be taken into consideration in view of the globalization of arbitration.

  • The financial industry in which arbitration is most frequently resorted to so as to resolve disputes is the sector related to the securities industry. Most securities related disputes are raised from broker-dealer controversies which is not new in the Republic of Korea. The disputes between securities brokers and customers are very frequently settled by arbitration in the United States. But the arbitration in the securities area may deprive investors from securities regulation's protection. Introducing the United States' Federal Supreme Courts cases, the author explores the logic of how the pre-dispute arbitration agreement compatible with Securities regulations. However, the author insist the South Korea should more careful in accepting pre-dispute arbitration contract in securities area. Mostly because of the lack of more specific way to secure substantive fairness in securities arbitration. Also the author worries about the possibility of prevailing pre-dispute arbitration agreement in all of the securities investment contract without any other choices, or securities laws' protection. But the author also suggests to introduce public securities arbitration system of the States, and also insists the way to secure substantive fairness, or the application of securities regulations in securities arbitrations. Which may be the pre-requirements for the pre-dispute arbitration agreement in securities investment contract.

  • The advance information for oceangoing cargoes destined to th United States enable CBP to evaluate the potential risk of smuggling WMD and to facilitate the prompt release of legitimate cargo following its arrival in the Unites States. On January 1, 2008, CBP promulgate regulations, also known as 10+2 rule, to require the electronic transmission of additional data elements for improved high-risk targeting, including appropriate security elements of entry data for cargo destined to the United States by vessel prior to loading of such cargo on vessels at foreign seaports. The potential impact to an importer's international supply chain will be as follows ; Firstly, importers will take incremental supply chain costs and filing costs. Secondly, anticipate delay in shipment of containerized cargo. Thirdly, importers could be charged fines if they fail to file and file inaccurate or missing data. Companies exporting to the United States should be interested in 10+2 rule, analyze their current processes and procedures to ensure that they are prepared to handle the additional filing requirements of 10+2 rule. And they should focus on how 10+2 impacts their supply chain in terms of costs and sourcing. They will be necessary to revise service legal agreements with their forwarders, customs brokers or carriers in order to meet filing requirements of 10+2 rule.

  • Marketing information systems become a competitive weapon that supports firms in making decisions on the operation of marketing-related activities. However, little research regarding the operating strategy of marketing information systems has been conducted in Korea. Considering that this issue has been studied in the United States, this paper conducted a global benchmarking on the operating strategy of marketing information systems between Korean and the United States firms. The result of this global benchmarking suggests recommendations on supports from three management levels, the mix of 4P, the management of marketing, data from environment, and information sources.
