  • Objectives : The aims of the study were to examine perceived oral malodor and self-reported need for oral and dental care among patients receiving oral prophylaxis services and provide guidelines for developing educational programs(toothbrushing method and tongue cleaning) for oral hygiene and oral malodor prevention. Methods : The survey was administered to a sample of 462 receiving voluntary oral prophylaxis service in a dental laboratory at the J School of Public Health in Korea. The subjects were asked a range of questions related to the degrees of perceived oral malodor and concern for oral health status, as well as their demographic information and need for oral and dental treatment. Univariate analyses using Chi-square and T-test with a P-value of .05 were performed using SPSS Version 12.0 for Windows. Results : 1. Male participants reported "moderately concerned for bad breath and smell" and "I don't care bad breath and smell" 39.1% and 26.2% respectively, while more female participants were concerned for oral malodor. "moderately concerned for malodor" and" highly concerned for malodor" 41.1% and 28.5%(p<.05). a significant difference among age groups was found. 19% of young adults (less than or equal to 29 years of age) reported "highly concerned for bad breath and smell" while 36.4% of older adults (greater than or equal to 50 years of age) reported "highly concerned for bad breath and smell"(p<.05). 2. 12 non-smoking participants (3.7%) and 15 smoking participants (10.8%) reported that they have perceived bad breadth and smell (p<.05). 3. Smoking participants reported a higher degree of need for oral malodor treatment than that of non-smoking participants 88.5% and 82% respectively(p<.05). 4. The participants who did regular toothbrushing more than 3 times a day reported "no malodor", 77 % as compared to 66.7% of the participants who did regular toothbrushing 2 times a day. Toothbrushing 2 times a day reported either "moderate malodor" or "sever malodor"(p<.01). Participants with more frequent toothbrushing reported less oral and breath odor as compared participants with less frequent toothbrushing. Conclusions : The study suggested that there is a need to oral prophylaxis for prevention and toothbrushing and tongue cleaning method oral malodor care and oral health status.

  • Because of the invisible nature of software and the bad coding habits (bad smell) of the existing developers, there are many redundant codes and unnecessary codes, which increases the complexity and makes it difficult to upgrade software. Therefore, it is required a code visualization so that developers can easily and automatically identify the complexity of the source code. To do this, it is necessary to construct SW visualization tool based on open source software and redefine the coupling and cohesion according to the object oriented viewpoint. Specially to identify a bad smell code pattern, we suggest how to plug-in diverse parsers within our tool. In this paper, through redefining coupling and cohesion from an object oriented perspective, we will extract bad smell code patterns within source code from inputting any pattern into the tool.

  • For video reality improvement, there has been much advancement in the methods of providing visual, auditory, and tactile information. On the other hand, there is little research on olfaction for video reality because it is difficult to define and knotty to manipulate. As a first step for video reality improvement using olfactory information, this research investigated users' acceptability of smell when they watch videos of various kinds and then classified the video clips based on their acceptability of different criteria. To do so, we first selected three questions of whether the scene in the video appears to have an odor (odor presence), whether a matching odor is likely to improve a sense of reality (effect on sense of reality), and whether s/he would like a matching odor to be present (preference for the matching odor). Then after collecting 51 video clips of various genres that would receive either high or low ratings for the questions above, we had participants to watch the videos and rate them for the above three questions on 7-point scale. For video classification, we paired each two questions to construct 2D space to draw scatterplot of video clips where the scales of the two questions represent X or Y axis. Clusters of video clips that locate at different quadrants of the 2D space would provide important insights in providing olfactory information for video reality improvement.

  • In response to diverse external stimuli, sensory receptors generate spiking nerve signals. These generated signals are transmitted to the brain along the neural pathway to advance to the stage of recognition or perception, and then they reach the area of discrimination or judgment for remembering, assessing, and processing incoming information. We review research trends in neuromorphic sensory perception technology inspired by biological sensory perception functions. Among the various senses, we consider sensory nerve decoding technology based on sensory nerve pathways focusing on touch and smell, neuromorphic synapse elements that mimic biological neurons and synapses, and neuromorphic processors. Neuromorphic sensory devices, neuromorphic synapses, and artificial sensory memory devices that integrate storage components are being actively studied. However, various problems remain to be solved, such as learning methods to implement cognitive functions beyond simple detection. Considering applications such as virtual reality, medical welfare, neuroscience, and cranial nerve interfaces, neuromorphic sensory recognition technology is expected to be actively developed based on new technologies, including combinatorial neurocognitive cell technology.

  • Currently on the school education site, various multimedia contents are used to effectively deliver knowledge to the students and increase interest in class. The majority of the multimedia contents currently used in classes are composed of visual and auditory information. This paper intends to maximize actuality and immersion in the content by adding olfactory information to the existing visual and auditory data. Tangible contents were developed based on the details of aromatic plants learned in the fifth grade of elementary school. The shape and explanation of the aromatic plants are displayed with visual and auditory information, and an aroma spraying application is used to allow the students to smell the aromatic plants. After conducting the class using the developed contents, the students' satisfaction of the class, as well as their overall academic understanding, were investigated. Upon doing so, it was discovered that the students' academic understanding and satisfaction increased in comparison to classes comprised of only visual and auditory contents.

  • The current software becomes the huge size of source codes. Therefore it is increasing the importance and necessity of static analysis for high-quality product. With static analysis of the code, it needs to identify the defect and complexity of the code. Through visualizing these problems, we make it guild for developers and stakeholders to understand these problems in the source codes. Our previous visualization research focused only on the process of storing information of the results of static analysis into the Database tables, querying the calculations for quality indicators (CK Metrics, Coupling, Number of function calls, Bad-smell), and then finally visualizing the extracted information. This approach has some limitations in that it takes a lot of time and space to analyze a code using information extracted from it through static analysis. That is since the tables are not normalized, it may occur to spend space and time when the tables(classes, functions, attributes, Etc.) are joined to extract information inside the code. To solve these problems, we propose a regularized design of the database tables, an extraction mechanism for quality metric indicators inside the code, and then a visualization with the extracted quality indicators on the code. Through this mechanism, we expect that the code visualization process will be optimized and that developers will be able to guide the modules that need refactoring. In the future, we will conduct learning of some parts of this process.
