Knowledge on Sudden Unexplained Infant Death-related Safe Sleep Practices and Infant Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in Pediatric Nurses

  • Purpose: Sudden unexplained infant death (SUID) is a major contributor to infant mortality, and pediatric nurses have the responsibility to educate parents on SUID-reducing strategies. This study was conducted to measure pediatric nurses' knowledge of SUID-related safe sleep practices (K-SSSP) and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (K-ICPR). Methods: In total, 136 pediatric nurses were administered a survey including K-SSSP (13 items), K-ICPR (5 items), confidence in K-SSSP education (1 item; 5 points), and other factors relating to SUID experiences or education. Results: The correct answer rates of the K-SSSP and K-ICPR were 62.6% and 62.5%, retrospectively. The mean score for confidence in K-SSSP education was 2.6±0.9. Only 18 nurses (13.2%) responded that they educated parents on the content of the K-SSSP, while 76 nurses had received education on SUID. Positive relationships were observed between K-SSSP scores and higher education, between K-ICPR scores and having own child(ren) and clinical experience, and between confidence in K-SSSP education and higher education or having one's own child(ren). Nurses caring for newborns performed more SUID education than nurses working in other units. Conclusion: There is a profound need to implement a systemic educational program on SUID and strategies to reduce SUID for pediatric nurses.

A Study on the Nursing Student's Attitude Toward Death and Perception on Hospice Care (간호학생의 죽음에 대한 태도 및 호스피스에 대한 인식)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine nursing students' attitude toward death and perception on hospice care. Methods: The survey was performed on 103 nursing students in one university in Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do. The data were collected by questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Regarding the attitude toward death, 90.3% of the students had thought about death. They worried about sense of loss and sadness due to parting with family (31.1%). About half (51.5%) of the students considered death as a final process of the life. With regard to the perception of hospice, 92.2% of the students heard about hospice through books or nursing classes (65.0%). Public institutions running by government was considered to the students as the best hospice management institution (44.7%). The students thought a ideal model of hospice setting in Korea was hospital or institution specialized with hospice care (51.5%). They considered the barriers to effective hospice care in Korea was the lack of the public consensus on the need for hospice program (35.9%). The average perceptions about the purpose of hospice care was 4.33 whereas the average of the need of hospice care was 3.85. Conclusion: The findings of the study provide the basis for expanding nursing practice and education related to hospice care.

Nursing Students' Attitude toward Death and Perception on Hospice Care (일부 간호학생의 죽음 관련 태도와 호스피스인식에 대한 실태조사)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine nursing students' attitude toward death and perception on hospice care. Methods: The survey was performed with 277 nursing students in three universities in Daegu and Busan. The data was collected by questionnaires and were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Regarding the attitude on death, 93.9% of the subjects had ever thought about death. They worried about separation and sadness with family (39.7%). About half (48.7%) of the subjects considered death as a final process of the life. With regard to the perception of hospice, 93% of the subjects heard about hospice through books or nursing courses (83.8%). The best hospice management institution was considered the one run by religious groups or non-profit organizations with government support (33.9%). Ideal model of hospice setting in Korea was hospital or institution specialized with hospice care (47.7%). The barriers the subjects thought to effective hospice care in Korea was the lack of the public consensus on the need for hospice program (37.9%). The average perceptions about the purpose of hospice care was 4.38, whereas, the average of the need of hospice care was 4.06. Conclusion: The findings of the study provides the basis for expanding nursing practice and education related to hospice care.

Correlation between Self-esteem, Death Anxiety, and Spiritual Wellbeing in Korean University Students

  • Purpose: This study aimed at understanding the correlation between self-esteem, death anxiety, and spiritual wellbeing in university students. Methods: Cross-sectional method was used 671 students in South Korea. This study used the Self-esteem developed by Rosenberg, the Fear of Death Scale revised by Lester and Abdel-Khalek, and Spiritual wellbeing developed by Paloutzian and Ellison. Results: Relationships between self-esteem, death anxiety, and spiritual wellbeing revealed an inverse correlation between self-esteem and death anxiety, and a direct correlation between self-esteem and spiritual wellbeing. Conclusion: In order for students of establishing identity to lead a healthy life, there is a need for studies aiming at developing, implementing, and evaluating the results of consultation and education programs for maintaining spiritual wellbeing such as psychological counseling and logotherapy at the university or regional community level.

  • The purpose of this paper is to pay attention to the problems of the elderly in our society, which is facing an aged society, to understand the lives of the elderly and to recognize the need for retirement and death preparation. It reviews and analyzes the story of So-young, the main character of the movie "Killing Woman," according to the context of the work. The narrative of the film illustrates the problems of suffering for the elderly, such as poverty, disease, dementia, loneliness, and fear of death. In the face of the ultra-aged era, institutional supplementation measures for underprivileged senior citizens at the national level should be established, and social interest and safety nets should be secured, and specific retirement preparations are needed personally. Furthermore, support for research and education of old age preparation education programs and death education programs to prepare for retirement and death should be continuously provided.

Death Attitude, Death Anxiety and Knowledge toward Advance Directives among Nursing Students (간호대학생의 죽음태도, 죽음불안 및 사전연명의료의향서에 관한 지식)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate death attitude, death anxiety, and knowledge toward advance directives of nursing students. Method: Participants were 157 nursing undergraduates in Korea. The students responded to a self-reporting questionnaire that included demographics, Death Attitude Profile-Revised (DAP-R), Revised Death Anxiety Scale (RDAS), and knowledge toward advance directives. The data collection period was December, 9-13, 2019. Data were analyzed by descriptive test, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient with SPSS/WIN 23.0. Results: The mean scores for death attitude, death anxiety, and knowledge toward advance directives were 2.70±0.58, 2.45±0.49, and 7.94±2.04, respectively. Knowledge toward advance directives was significantly different according to age, grade, and experience of end-of-life care education. Death attitude was significantly associated with death anxiety (r=. 27, p<.001). Conclusion: Knowledge toward advance directive was relatively low compared to the findings of previous studies. Therefore, nursing colleges need to include legal and institutional aspects when writing written letters on advance directive, death attitude, and ethical approaches to death anxiety.

Perception on Hospice and Attitude to Death for University Students (대학생의 호스피스 인식과 죽음 태도)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine relation between perception on hospice and attitude toward death to provide baseline data for the development of programs for hospice or death-related education for university students. The survey was performed on 150 students in four universities in B metropolitan city. The data was collected from July 30 to August 13, 2019. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA Pearson's correlation coefficient with the SPSS/WIN 26.0 program. The mean of perception on hospice score was 3.06 out of 4, of the attitude toward death, 'neutral acceptance', 'fear of death', 'death avoidance', 'approach acceptance', and 'escape acceptance' had average scores of 5.31, 3.77, 3.56, 3.15, and 3.06, respectively. There were significant differences in perception on hospice according to gender, major, and experience of hospice-related education and in attitude toward death according to gender, major, religion, subjective health status, experience of hospice-related education. The relationship between perception on hospice and neutral acceptance showed a significant positive correlation, and fear of death and death avoidance showed a significant negative correlation. Therefore, we need consider these variables to develop a hospice or death-related education program to enhance university students' attitudes to death and their perception of hospice.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the status of medical staff stress and accommodating manners on the death of patients in a hospital setting for serving the basic information to develop a death education program of medical personnel from April 1 to April 30, 2014. A survey was performed on 353 medical personnel at K university hospital, located in Daejeon metropolitan city. Frequency analysis, chi-square test, and independent t-test were used to analyze the data. The results showed that 'to understand the value of the time and preparedness of a meaningful future' were the most important perspectives on the contents of death education (p<0.05), 'in order to change perceptions and attitudes toward death positively' was the most important reason why they required death education'(p<0.05), 'case-based teaching and problem-based learning' was the most effective way of death education (p<0.05), 'negative or hostile response of a patient's guardian to medical personnel' was the largest stress that medical personnel confront upon witnessing a death'(p<0.05). An understanding of the death of patients by medical personnel and an awareness of the need for death education will help improve the understanding of the patient, their guardian, and medical personnel themselves. The main findings will contribute to the development of a specific death education program on the medical personnel in a hospital setting.

  • Hospice movement in Taiwan emerged early in 1983. There was a nurse visiting terminal cancer patients by herself in Taipei city. It was ceased after one year. This stage of hospice movement might be called as "compassionate era". In early 1990, the first in-patient hospice ward was set up in north Taiwan. She demonstrated high touch in the high technology medical atmosphere. There was a great echo in Taiwan society to this action. In the following years, quite a few new hospice settings were founded. Medical professionals were aroused again to talk and think about life and death, dignity of dying and holistic care. This stage of hospice movement might be called as "ethical stage". Around 2000, obstructions were discovered in our development. We do need system and rules. Standard of setting and care, Curriculum of education and training, Accreditation system and specialist system and Nature Death Act are some of the systems we approached. This stage of hospice movement might be called as "Act stage". Among the "Act stage", the Nature Death Act is actually the mile stone in our history. Attitude toward Death and Recognition of Hospice of Community Dwellers (일 지역 주민의 죽음에 대한 태도 및 호스피스에 대한 인식)

  • Purpose: To investigate the attitude toward death and recognition of hospice of community dwellers and to examine the differentiation between the attitude, recognition, and demographic variables. Method: This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study using a questionnaire. The Fear of Death Scale (FODS) made by Collect & Lester (1969) and translated and revised by Kim (2003) was used to measure the fear of death. The data were analyzed using SPSS. Results: The subjects were725 community dwellers, 65.8% female with a mean age of 39.9 years. The mean FODS score was 3.17 out of 5, showing a slightly high negative attitude to death. There was a statistically significant difference between the type of religion and total FODS (F=3.91. p=.02). Of the respondents, 66.5% had heard of hospice and 5.5% had received hospice care. Conclusion: Based on the study results, various types of death education program for community dwellers, including the content of hospice care, should be developed. In addition, public relations for the settlement of desirable dying culture and hospice service need to be activated.
