An Open Medical Platform to Share Source Code and Various Pre-Trained Weights for Models to Use in Deep Learning Research

  • Deep learning-based applications have great potential to enhance the quality of medical services. The power of deep learning depends on open databases and innovation. Radiologists can act as important mediators between deep learning and medicine by simultaneously playing pioneering and gatekeeping roles. The application of deep learning technology in medicine is sometimes restricted by ethical or legal issues, including patient privacy and confidentiality, data ownership, and limitations in patient agreement. In this paper, we present an open platform, MI2RLNet, for sharing source code and various pre-trained weights for models to use in downstream tasks, including education, application, and transfer learning, to encourage deep learning research in radiology. In addition, we describe how to use this open platform in the GitHub environment. Our source code and models may contribute to further deep learning research in radiology, which may facilitate applications in medicine and healthcare, especially in medical imaging, in the near future. Emamectin benzoate와 Pyridaben의 잔효성에 따른 담배가루이의 섭식행동 변화 (Changes of Feeding Behavior of Sweetpotato Whitefly, Bemisia tabaci Correlated with the Residual Effect of Emamectin benzoate and Pyridaben)

  • Emamectin benzoate와 pyridaben에 대한 담배가루이의 잔효성과 섭식행동의 상관관계를 조사하였다. EPG의 파형은 non-probe time과 phloem phase time과 같은 파형을 신호개시 후 3시간 동안 기록하여 분석하였다. EPG 파형 중 non-probe time과 phloem phase time의 두 파형과 emamectin benzoate와 Pyridaben의 두 약제 간 잔효성의 상관관계 분석에서 모두 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 잔효성은 두 약제 모두 2일까지는 50%로 비슷하였으나, 그 이후로는 pyridaben보다 emamectin benzoate가 급격히 감소하였다. EPG를 이용한 두 약제의 잔효성에 따른 구침을 찌른 시간과 체관부 섭식행동은 9일 이후부터 증가하는 경향을 보였으며, emamectin benzoate가 pyridaben보다 증가하는 속도가 빨랐다.

  • For decades, the various virtues of ${\alpha}-lipoic$ acid (ALA), a natural material synthesized in most cells, have been intensively studied and proved. Recently it was reported that ALA caused significant bodyweight reduction via appetite suppression. Unfortunately, the efficacy requires an administration over 50 mg/kg. The low bioavailability and the short plasma half life of ALA lead us to explore novel pharmaceutical dosage forms using nanoparticles. In this study, the effect of polymeric stabilizers on the bioavailability improvement of ALA nanoparticles was investigated. The reduction of particle size via nano-comminution technology was successful resulting in volume average particle sizes of 320 - 340 nm. The in vitro release rate of ALA did not reflect the decrease of particle size, possibly because of the self polymerization of ALA during nano-comminution. The type of polymeric stabilizers could not affect the release rate either. However, the in vivo food intake results of ALA showed that nano-suspensions were more effective than microparticles or a salt form. The nano-suspension containing polyvinyl pyrrolidone as the primary stabilizer and polyacrylic acid as the secondary stabilizer showed more improved efficacy for 2 hours.

넙치에서 lincomycin 근육투여에 따른 휴약기간 도출 및 병원성 그람음성 세균에 대한 약효 평가 (Withdrawal time study of lincomycin administered intramuscularly to olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, and in vitro efficacy evaluation against Gram-negative bacterial pathogens)

  • 본 연구는 lincomycin (LM)의 근육투여에 따른 저수온(13℃)에서의 잔류 특성 및 넙치에서 병원성 세균으로 발견되는 그람음성 세균에서의 시험관 내 in vitro 약효를 평가하기 위하여 수행하였다. LM을 10, 20 및 40 mg/kg의 용량으로 단회 투여하였을 때, 근육내 농도가 잔류허용기준인 0.1 mg/kg 이하로 감소하는 기간은 각각 32일, 33일 및 55일로 평가되었다. 또한, 현장 분리 균주 그람음성 세균인 Edwardsiella piscida 및 Vibrio harveyi에 대하여 LM의 minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC)로 평가된 in vitro 약효는 각각 >256 ㎍/mL 및 32 ㎍/mL을 나타냈다. 연구 결과, 넙치 양식장에서 사용되는 LM의 임상용량인 10 mg/kg을 고려하였을 때의 휴약기간을 30일 이상으로 설정하면 합리적일 것으로 판단된다. 또한 LM이 넙치 연쇄상구균증 치료 목적으로 투여될 때 그 동시에 감염된 그람음성 세균에는 약효가 발휘되지 않을 것으로 추정한다.

Inhibitory Effects of Chicken Egg Yolk Antibody on Infection of Escherichia coli in Macrophage

  • The present study evaluated the potential use of immunoglobulin prepared from egg yolk of chickens immunized with Escherichia coli K88 (IgY-Ec) in the control of E. coli K88 infection in RAW 264.7 murine macrophage. The binding activity of IgY-Ec against E. coli K88 surface protein was more specific and increased than control IgY. In infection assay of E. coli in macrophage, the specific IgY-Ec to E. coli K88 remarkably inhibited the phagocytic activity comparing to nonspecific IgY (p<0.001). In adherence assay, bacterial adhesion on macrophage cells was definitely reduced by preincubation of IgY-Ec compared with nonspecific IgY (p<0.05). These findings suggested that IgY-Ec have the protective effects against pathogens and IgY-based diets may have potential benefits for preventing or treating various infections in domestic animals.

Stomach clusterin as a gut-derived feeding regulator

  • The stomach has emerged as a crucial endocrine organ in the regulation of feeding since the discovery of ghrelin. Gut-derived hormones, such as ghrelin and cholecystokinin, can act through the vagus nerve. We previously reported the satiety effect of hypothalamic clusterin, but the impact of peripheral clusterin remains unknown. In this study, we administered clusterin intraperitoneally to mice and observed its ability to suppress fasting-driven food intake. Interestingly, we found its synergism with cholecystokinin and antagonism with ghrelin. These effects were accompanied by increased c-fos immunoreactivity in nucleus tractus solitarius, area postrema, and hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus. Notably, truncal vagotomy abolished this response. The stomach expressed clusterin at high levels among the organs, and gastric clusterin was detected in specific enteroendocrine cells and the submucosal plexus. Gastric clusterin expression decreased after fasting but recovered after 2 hours of refeeding. Furthermore, we confirmed that stomachspecific overexpression of clusterin reduced food intake after overnight fasting. These results suggest that gastric clusterin may function as a gut-derived peptide involved in the regulation of feeding through the gut-brain axis.

  • 양식 농어에 있어서 연속 채혈 스트레스는 혈장내 glucose 농도의 뚜렷한 증가 및 말초 혈액내 식세포의 chemiluminescent 반응을 유의적으로 감소시켰다. 실험어는 연속적인 스트레스에 대해 축적적인 반응을 나타내었으며, 혈장내 glucose의 농도는 스트레스 부과 시간간격에 의존하는 것으로 나타났다. 혈장내 glucose의 농도와 chemiluminescent 반응간에는 통계적으로 유의적인 (P<0.05) 음의 상관관계를 나타내었다.

Hepatoprotective Effects of Potato Peptide against D-Galactosamine-induced Liver Injury in Rats

  • The effect of some peptides on hepatoprotection and cecal fermentation against D-galactosamine (GalN)-treated rats was studied. In acute hepatic injury tests, serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotranferase (AST), and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) activities were remarkably increased after injection of GalN. However, potato and soybean peptides significantly decreased GalN-induced alterations of serum ALT and AST activities. Hepatic thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) concentration in GalN-treated groups fed potato and soybean peptides was significantly lower than that in GalN-treated control group. Hepatic glutathione level in the GalN-treated group fed potato peptide was significantly higher than that in GalN-treated control group. Furthermore, cecal Lactobacillus level in GalN-treated groups fed potato and soybean peptides was significantly higher than that in GalN-treated control group, and cecal short-chain fatty acid concentrations in GalN-treated group fed potato peptide were significantly higher than in GalN-treated control group. These results indicate that potato peptide may improve the cecal fermentation and prevent the GalN-induced liver damage in rats.

Comparison of Microbial Community of Rhizosphere and Endosphere in Kiwifruit

  • Understanding the microbial community and function are crucial knowledge for crop management. In this study, bacterial and fungal community structures both rhizosphere and endosphere in kiwifruit were analyzed to gain our knowledge in kiwifruit microbiome. Microbial community in rhizosphere was less variation than endosphere community. Functional prediction results demonstrated that abundance of saprotrophic fungi was similar in both rhizosphere and endosphere, but potential pathogenic fungi was more abundance in endosphere than in rhizosphere. This finding suggested that maintain healthy soil is the first priority to protect the host plant against biotic stresses.

  • The study investigated the dietary effects of medicinal herbs extract and multiple probiotics mixture on the growth performance, innate immune response and antibacterial activity of nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. Tilapia were divided in four groups. The first is a fish group fed a basal diet added with 40% medicinal herbs extract (MHE). The second is a fish group fed a basal diet supplied with $2{\times}10^8CFU/g$ of 2 Bacillus sp, 2 Lactobacillus sp and 2 Yeast sp, respectively (PB). The third group was fed with a mixture of probiotics (2 Bacillus sp, 2 Lactobacillus sp and 2 Yeast sp) with the medicinal herbs extract added in basal diet (MHE+PB). The fourth group was fed only a basal diet (C). In a non-specific immune parameters analysis, respiratory burst activity, lysozyme activity, phagocytic activity (PA), alternative complement pathway activity ($ACH_{50}$) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were significantly (p<0.05) increased in the group MHE+PB compared to other groups. Both PB and MHE groups showed a significant (p<0.05) increase in respiratory burst activity, lysozyme activity compared to the control C group, whereas no significant differences were observed in PA, $ACH_{50}$ and SOD activity compared to the control group. In challenging test, fish were administered with Edwardsiella tarda (E. tarda) on 30 days after feeding with each experimental diet and viable E. tarda cell reduction was checked over 21 days post injection. MHE+PB group showed a significantly (p<0.05) reduced E. tarda cells compared to other groups. No significant antibacterial difference (p>0.05) was observed between PB and MHE only treated group. Compared to the control, a significant antibacterial difference (p<0.05) appeared in PB but not in MHE (p>0.05). The results suggest that the probiotics and MHE mixture could be utilized as an alternative to antibiotics in the control of fish diseases caused by E. tarda.
