  • Based on the Leaf Area Index (LAI) data derived from remote sensing information and eco-climate data, the responses of regional ecosystem variations in seasonal and interannual scales to the East Asian monsoon are studied in this paper. It is found that the vegetation ecosystems of eastern China are remarkably correlated with the East Asian monsoon in seasonal and interannual scales. In the seasonal timescale, the obvious variations of the vegetation ecosystems occur with the development of the East Asian monsoon from the south in the spring to the north in the autumn. In the interannual scale, high LAI appears in the strong East Asian monsoon year, whereas low LAI is related to the weak East Asian monsoon year. These further lead to the characteristic of 'onsoon-driven ecosystem' in the eastern China monsoon region, which can be revealed by LAI.

  • The modern philosophy of historic conservation focuses on the permanence of the material aspects of monuments as historic evidence of the artistic achievement of the past. However, so strongly are European attitudes to architecture and its conservation embedded in modern conservation, that it has skewed all conservation thinking towards the concept of the European-type monument which emphasizes visual beauty through its material substance. Thus, some basic ideas of modern conservation seem ill-suited to East Asian architecture which is conceived in a different spirit from its European counterpart. The purposes of the paper are to discuss the need for approaches which are different from the modern Western view of conservation for East Asian architectural heritage, and to make suggestions for developing conservation principles more suited to the unique values and aesthetic sense of East Asian culture and architecture. Conservation principles in the East Asian societies are determined in relation to the spiritual and naturalistic sensibilities of East Asian culture and architecture.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the emergence of Chinese economy and the possibility of economic cooperation between the East Asian countries, which will facilitate the solution to structural problems in the economy and industries of these countries. This study presents that China will remain essential to the East Asian economy and changes are anticipated in its economic growth rate, growth strategy and risks. How to respond to them will be the critical movement that will determine the future course of the East Asian economy. To solve this question, firstly each government of East Asian countries needs to come up with strategies that will leverage China for their industrial upgrade and economic development even when the risks facing China are realized. Second, each government of East Asian countries should make a wise approach towards a free trade agreement between EATR and China.

  • Trans-Siberian Railway (TSR) has been recently rising to the surface as the world important issue with Trans-Korea Railway (TKR). This can change transportation means from sea to railway and enhance Korean international position through the North-east Asian economic cooperaton with Russia. In particular, when 'Iron Silkroad' linking TKR is created, it can revitalize the underdeveloped East Russia and Far East's economies and Korean railway can play a key role as the North-east Asian logistics center and exerts a powerful influence on them. In addition, Korean railway expects to obtain economic benefits accruing to various value-added businesses such as IT, tourism, especially, transportation business from the East Siberia, the world largest reserves of energy to Korea. This study tries to find economic value analysis and guidelines on strategies of Korean railway with international logistics base built in Khassan (Vladivostok contiguity region) through the development of energy deposited around east of TSR.

  • Eight compounds were isolated from the MeOH extracts of Erythrina senegalensis for HIV-1 protease inhibitors. Their structures were elucidated as eight isoflavonoids by spectroscopic analysis. These compounds showed dose dependent inhibitory activities on HIV-l protease with $IC_{50}$ values from 0.5 to 30.0 ${\mu}$M. (omitted)

  • China, the largest country in East Asia, has a pteridoflora of over 2000 species, belonging to about 220 genera in 63 families. There are about 28 East Asiatic genera of Pteridophytes and 6 genera specifically endemic to China. Most of these genera are oligotypic or monotypic groups. Five distribution patterns of the East Asiatic genera are distinguished, i.e., I. Sino-Himalayan type, 10 genera; II. Sino-Japanese type, 4 genera; III. Japan-Himalayan type, 6 genera; IV. Temperate East Asiatic type, 3 genera; and V. Tropical East Asiatic type, 5 genera. The Chinese endemic genera are mainly distributed in southwestern China. The distribution, ecology, taxonomy, and systematics of these genera are discussed.

  • CCl4 has been known as typical chemical which induce acute hepatitis accompanying increase in the levels of acute phase proteins in serum. In this study, after acute liver damage was induced by CCl4 in Sprague-Dawley rats, the levels of serum acute phase proteins were examined using 2-dimensional electrophoresis and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels in blood were also examined at 1, 2, 3 days after the induction to confirm acute hepatitis. • We had the first committee meeting of the East Asia VLBI Consortium during the EAMA6 meeting held in Seoul. A VLBI network composed of telescopes in the East Asia region could provide extreme properties, and the coordination of them has been expected. The Committee of the East Asia VLBI Consortium is a standing committee to promote activities of the consortium, in which participating countries at present are China, Japan, and Korea over eight institutes/observatories. Here we introduce the Consortium and Committee.

  • I report here about the future direction of cooperation of astronomy in East Asia region, which has been a long-years subject of the EAMA since 1990. During this EAMA-6 we had many positive discussions and remarkable progress toward the promotion of our cooperation. We also had an 'East Asian Observatory' WG meeting yesterday with many attendants, and actively discussed this important subject in some detail. The following report is to summarize the fruitful products we had in the EAMA-6 discussions and in past EAMA activities, and to propose a direction and some action items toward the bright future of astronomy in East Asia.

  • In this study, we studied the structure of the western East Sea ecosystem and ecotrophic relationships among species inhabited at the East Sea using Ecopath (Christensen and Pauly, 1992) program. And in order to examine how the Climatic Regime Shift (CRS) affected to the western East Sea ecosystem, we analyzed the structure of the western East Sea ecosystem dividing before and after 1976/1977 CRS.
