  • During New year's day and Thanksgiving holiday, the 1339 Information Center in Gwangju and Jeonnam received an emergency medical situation and carried out the analysis as follows ; 1. The reason for the higher phone guidance(72%) of the hospital was based on the simple query for the pain control rather than emergency care. This was explained by the unfamiliar environment of the holiday movers. Pharmaceutical guidance(12.6%) in rural area was also given during the holidays. 2. The disease counselling(2.4%) and emergency treatment instruction(First Aid)(1.6%) decreased because of the small number of request for the diseases. This explained the decrease of the disease counselling. 3. The phone calls increased 8-13 times more than usual. Five-day holidays could have more emergency patients than three-day holidays. During New year's day and Thanksgiving day, the number of received phone calls was 6,444(25.7%) and this accounted for one fourth of the total number in 2007. 4. The number of the patients increased on New year's day and Thanksgiving day because most of the medical institutions and pharmacy were off duty. 5. The patients were centered in Internal medicine and pediatrics. This showed the food-borne diseases and air-borne infection such as common cold. 6. During Thanksgiving day, ophthalmologic patients having viral keratoconjunctivitis(Apollo eye disease) increased 8 folds than in New year's day. It was estimated from the continuous epidemic of Apollo eye disease. 7. There broke out the traffic accidents, food poisoning, infectious diseases, dermatological diseases due to seasonal and environmental changes during the holiday move.

  • This paper proposes an improved algorithm of the daily peak load forecasting for Korean Thanksgiving Day and the Lunar New Year's day. So far, many studies on the short-term load forecasting have been made to improve the accuracy of the load forecasting. However, the large errors of the load forecasting occur i case of Korean Thanksgiving Day and the Lunar New Year's Day. In order to reduce the errors of the load forecasting, the fuzzy linear regression method is introduced and a good selection method of the past load pattern is presented. Test results show that the proposed algorithm improves the accuracy of the load forecasting.

  • This study was to investigate the eating behavior and the anthropometric and biochemical correlates of dietary restraint in femals university from 14 to 20 September 1997, including a Korean Thanksgiving day (16 September). The daily energy intakes and macronutrient compositions were analyzed by means of 7-day dietary records. The most important variable correlated with dietary restraint was hip girth. When dividing the subjects into restrained and unrestrained groups by the basis of a median spit on the hip girth, the restrained group had a about 400kcal less than the unrestrained group in 16 September. Differences were also found with respect to macronutrient composition. The restrained group showed a significant lower fat portion of the energy intake in 16 September and a higher fat portion in 20 September than the unrestrained group. It means that the restrained eaters reduced their fat intake in the Korean Thanksgiving day. However, they can't keep the cognitive control in the 4-day after the holiday.

  • The accuracy of load forecast is very important from the viewpoint of economical power system operation. In general, the weekdays' load demand pattern has the continuous time series characteristics. Therefore, the conventional methods expose stable performance for weekdays. In case of special days or weekends, the load demand pattern has the discontinuous time series characteristics, so forecasting error is relatively high. Especially, weekdays near the thanksgiving day and lunar new year's day have the mixed load profile characteristics of both weekdays and weekends. Therefore, it is difficult to forecast these days by using the existing algorithms. In this study, a new load forecasting method is proposed in order to enhance the accuracy of the forecast result considering the characteristics of weekdays and weekends. The proposed method was tested with these days during last decades, which shows that the suggested method considerably improves the accuracy of the load forecast results.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest basic data on the education of traditional living culture and seasonal customs. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, a research questionnaires consisting of 46 questions was developed. The data was collected by 287 child caregivers in Incheon Metropolitan City. and the data analysis was conducted with the SPSS/Win 17.0 program. The results of this study, they are summarized as follows. First, child caregivers overall perception of the traditional life and culture was scored as 3.28. Their perception of the need for education on traditional life and culture was scored as 3.7, and their knowledge and interest both as 2.77. The analysis of difference according to background variables revealed, significant difference in educational experience (p. <05) and age (p. <01). Second, the child caregivers were unaware any other seasonal customs besides Chuseok(Korean Thanksgiving), Tano(a festival occurring on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar), Lunar New Year's Day, and Daeboreum (the day of the first full moon of the year) Third, child caregivers perceived 'culture' experiences as being very important for education about seasonal customs. Forth, two of Korea's seasonal customs, Chuseok(Korean Thanksgiving) and the Lunar New Year's Day have always been celebrated with family gatherings. Fifth, child caregivers awareness of seasonal customs is correlated with educational training. And their awareness of the traditional living culture is also correlated with educational training.

  • This study investigates the Gabo Jaedong Jemuljeongnyechaek, which is the recording of the darye executed over a period of a year in 1834 ($34^{th}$ year of reign by King Sunjo) in the latter part of the Joseon Dynasty, two years after the death of Princess Bokon, the $2^{nd}$ daughter of King Sunjo. Accordingly, we examined the types of darye (tea ceremonies) and the characteristics of the composition of foods at ancestral rites of the royal families of Joseon. Moreover, we also analyzed the cooking methods and characteristics of food terminologies used in the darye. This includes 39 categories of food and ingredients used for tea ceremonies held for one year, on behalf of the deceased Princess Bokon in 1834. The darye for the monthly national holiday was held along with the darye on the $1^{st}$ and the $15^{th}$ day of every month. The darye for rising up and the birthday darye were held on May $12^{th}$ and October $26^{th}$ of the lunar calendar, being the anniversaries of the death and the birth of Princess Bokon, respectively. The birthday darye and the darye for New Year's Day, Hansik ($105^{th}$ day after winter solstice), Dano ($5^{th}$ day of the $5^{th}$ month of the lunar calendar), and Thanksgiving "Chuseok" were held in the palace and at the burial site of the Princess. During the darye for rising up in May and the Thanksgiving darye at the burial site in August, rituals offering meals to the deceased were also performed. The birthday darye at the burial site of Princess Bokon featured the most extensive range of foods offered, with a total of 33 dishes. Foods ranging 13~25 dishes were offered at the national holiday darye, while the darye on the $1^{st}$ and the $15^{th}$ of the month included 9~11 food preparations, making them more simplified with respect to the composition of foods offered at the ceremony, in comparison to the national holiday darye. The dishes were composed of ddeok, jogwa, silgea, hwachae, foods such as tang, jeok, jjim, hoe, and sikhae, and grain-based foods such as myeon, mandu, and juk. Foods offered at the burial site darye included 12~13 dishes comprising ban, tang, jochi, namul, chimchae, and jang. Meals offered at the darye had a composition similar to that of the daily royal table (sura). Darye recorded in the Jemuljeongnyechaek displayed characteristics of the seasonal foods of Korea. Jemuljeongnyechaek has detailed recordings of the materials, quantities, and prices of the materials required for preparations of the darye. It is quite certain that Jemuljeongnyechaek would have functioned as an essential reference in the process of purchasing and preparing the food materials for the darye, that were repeated quite frequently at the time.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the actual state of utilization of Korean traditional foods by Korean Americans residing in L.A. area and to provide come policies, to improve their attitudes for Korean traditional foods. The proper period preparing traditional foods was the occasion of family events(47.0% )and Korean festivals(40.8%). Festival foods were prepared in Sulnal( =New Year's Day), Chusok( =the Korean Thanksgiving Day), Daeborum( =the 15th of January by the lunar calendar), Dongji( =the winter solstice) and Tano( =the 5th day of the 5th by lunar month), respectively. Sixty five percent of all the respondents expressed their wish to hand down the cooking methods of traditional foods. However, only28.6% of the respondents at their twenties replied positively on this matter. To maintain and develop traditional foods abroad, it is necessary that older generations sometimes offer opportunities to meet with them to the coming korean generations to taste traditional foods and that Korean food companies establish special selling agencies abroad and export standardized traditional foods. And furthermore, if tourism corporations and cooking schools hold a food exhibition and or a food-tasting party, occasionally, in conjunction with the embassies and legations abroad, the utilization of traditional foods will increase.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the perceptional patterns of Korean traditional food for China-Korean housewives in Yanbian area and to compare the preference for traditional food of Korean national holidays between the perceptional patterns. Data were collected from 261 China-Korean housewives in the Yanbian area and cluster analysis was used. The results revealed two different patterns, i.e., tradition-oriented vs. modem-oriented. Descriptive statistics showed that perceptional patterns were likely to vary depending on socio-demographic background. Also, perceptional patterns were significantly related with the preference of traditional food of national holidays i.e., new years day, first full moon of January, thanksgiving day, han-shik (the 105th day after the winter solstice), and dong-gi (the coldest winter solstice). Similarities and differences in perceptional patterns as well as preference of traditional food of national holidays were discussed, and future implications for food nutritionists and Asia marketers were provided.

  • Early-maturing rice type is cultivated to produce rice before the Korean Thanksgiving Day. We investigated the flowering and ripening characteristics of major breeding lines in early maturing rice type. In Jeonju, field growth days (FGD) from transplanting to heading changed about 3.3 days by 10 days of transplanting days and about 2.5 days by the change of mean temperature during growth period. As the temperature during ripening stage, 1000 brown rice weight was changed 0.2 g, the rice quality of brown and milled rice was changed 5% and 6.5%, respectively. Baegilmi and Kittake showed early heading habit suitable for harvesting before Korean Thanksgiving. Joun and Pecos showed good ripening characteristics under high temperature during the ripening stage. We expect that these characteristics might be useful for breeding new rice cultivars for harvesting before Korean Thanksgiving.
