Morphological and molecular information of two marine algae collected from Korea is given. One belonging to a green alga, is characterized by small size up to 4 cm high, much branched thalli on all sides, slender and linear branchlets which is constricted near base, axes without prominent branch scars, chloroplasts with a prominent central pyrenoid. The other, as a brown alga, is distinct from other Korean species in having cylindrical elevated projections at all parts of thallus axis, leaves with slightly serrulate margin together with distinct midrib bearing spines and absence to rarely occurred vesicles. In phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequences, these two species are nested in the same clade with Bryopsis triploramosa and Sargassum polyporum, respectively. In this study, these two species are newly recorded in the Korean marine algal flora based on the morphological and molecular data.
One new species of the genus Coreomyces was collected on Micronecta sedula from the island of Java; C. javanicus sp. nov. is very similar to and apparently closely related to C. corixae. This species is characterized by a receptacle that is bent towards one side with cell I, nearly rounded. The length of cell I is equal to that of cell II and the perithecia are longitudinal, elliptical or cylindrical. Thalli consistently occurred on the margin of the left elytron of the hosts.
Recently deschbed new species, Cladosiphon umezakii Ajisaka (Ectocarpales,Phaeophyceae) is reported in Korea based on morphology and plastid rbcL sequences. Cladosiphon umezakii occurred on low intertidal to subtidal zone along the south and southeast coasts in Korea. Thalli are gold to dark brown, ercct, cylindrical, irregularly branched, and very mucoid. Unitocular zoidangium is developed at the base uf assimilatory filaments. Assimilatory filaments are very long. Eight specimens of the pecies collected from Korea clustered with those of C. umezakii in Japan in rbcL tree. The pecies showed a sister relationship with C. okamuranus. The occurrence of this warm water species is thought an example of northward migration of marine algae caused by global warming. Because C. umezakii is of the economica! importance of the genus as foods and medidnes, the study on mass culture of the species is necessary in korea.

Vegetative morphological information of the red alga Neorhodomela larix (Turner) Masuda (Rhodomelaceae) is given. This species is characterized by thalli up to 15 cm high, brownish black in color, pericentral cells with transverse division, the first order subulate branches with determinate growth, numerous adventitious branches produced at axils and absence of vegetative trichoblasts. Particularly, N. larix is distinct from other Korean Neorhodomela species by the lack of vegetative trichoblasts, which seems to be caused by their delayed production until reproductive structures are formed. This is the first record of N. larix in Korea.
A marine algal species was collected from Sacheonjin, Gangneung located on the eastern coast of Korea during a survey of marine algal flora. This alga shares the generic features of Membranoptera belonging to the subfamily Delesserioideae and is characterized by the presence of combined features of membranous, monostromatic thalli attached by a solid discoid holdfast, blades with a conspicuous terete stipe-like midrib and microscopic lateral veins, entire margins, irregularly alternate to dichotomous branching, and obtuse apices growing apically. In a phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequences, the Korean alga nests in the same clade with M. alata from the eastern North Atlantic. The genetic distance between both the sequences within the clade was calculated as 0.0%. Based on the morphological and molecular analyses, this Korean species is identified as the generic type, M. alata. This is the first record in the list of Korean marine algal flora.
A marine red algal species was collected from Pyengdae-ri, Gujwa in Jeju, Korea during a survey of marine algal flora. This alga shares the generic features of Callophyllis(Gigartinales, Kallymeniaceae), and is characterized by erect and membranous thalli, branches dichotomously or trichotomoulsy divided, margin somewhat undulate or entire and tetrasporangia scattered irregularly in the cortex. In a phylogenetic tree based on rbc L sequences, the Korean alga nests in the same clade as C. mageshimensis originally described from Japan. The genetic distance between both sequences within the clade was 0.0-0.1%. Based on the morphological and molecular data, the alga was identified as Callophyllis mageshimensis. This is the first record of C. mageshimensis in Korean marine algal flora.
Recently an unknown microbial desease and some parasitic crustaceans are prevailing in the sea-weed farms of Uudaria pinnatifida along the south-eastern coast of Korea.(1) Green spots probably caused by the microbial pathogens were found on the fronds of Undaira Pinnatifide. Particularly they were densely distributed on the distal half of the fronds. The tissues of the green spot area rot off, and small holes with green colored margin are formed. The holes at the distal part of the fronds are enlarged and they finally coalesced each other. Then this process accelerates decaying of the distal ends of the fronds.. The fronds growing in the central part of the farms are usually severely damaged, whereas in the marginal area of the farm toward the open sea side the damage is less serious. An examination revealed that the deseased fronds bore a number of viable bacteria, $6.8\times10^5\;to\;1.2\times10^6$ per gram at $15^{\circ}C$, whereas the healthy fronds $1.1\times10^4$. Twenty-six kinds of colonies, 247 strains of bacteria, were isolated from deseased fronds, belonging to Moraxella, Achromobacter, Vibrio, Flavobacterium, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, etc. (2) Pinholes occurred in one series on the frond. They were probably caused by a harpacticoid copepod, Thalestris sp. Seven years ago when the disease was first found to occur the copepod was observed on the fronds from March of the year. Recently, however, they have been found as early as December of the previous year. (3) A gammarid amphipod, Ceinina iaponica, invades the pith of the midrib through holdfast of thalli. This rarely causes the longitudinal seperation of the entire frond through the midrib as they bore a tunnel in the pith. Sometimes holdfasts of tile heavy damaged thalli make the frond departed from the substrate.
Lichen is a symbiotic association which lichen-forming fungi associate with green algae or cyanobacteria capable of producing food by photosynthesis. Lichen is one of the most widely distributed eukaryotic organisms on every kind of surface of soils, rocks and trees. Lichen-forming fungi commonly colonize on the surface of barks of dead or dying trees, which they use merely as a means of support without parasitizing. Lichen consortium of Parmotrema autrosinense and several crustose lichens heavily colonized on the surface of P. mume in Suncheon, Jeonnam province in Korea. The lichen consortium on the surface of P. mume gave the affected trees a dull gray appearance and suppressed their normal growths. Severely affected twigs or branches resulted in the death when the lichen thalli were not rubbed off the barks of P. mume. Twigs or branches of P. mume were recovered from blight syndrome when the lichen thalli were rubbed off, The recovered twigs or branches became healthy and clean when $Tween^{(R)}$ 20 or thiophanate-methyl paste were treated on the barks of P. mume. This is the first report of lichen diseases on P. mume caused by colonization of consortium of several crustose lichens including P. autrosinense.
In order to clarify major reasons of a poor harvest, the Porphyra-cultivation ground was investigated in Kwangyang Bay in terms of the laver production per unit area, diseases, and fouling organisms from January to April in 1986. The laver production per unit area of the control station was more than that of the study area at 'Soppal' cultivation ground, while the difference at the cultivation groud using 'nets' seemed to be insignificant. The vertical attachment range of laver was directly associated with the production per unit area at 'Soppal' cultivation ground. The number of young thalli of 1-3 mm length was almost similar between control and study sites at 'nets' cultivation ground. Two kinds of diseases in cultured laver, the crape and shot hole, were prevalent during the study period. However, the affected thalli were gradually decreased at the end of the study period. Major fouling organisms attached to 'Soppal' were Balanus albicostatus, Enteromorpha prolifera, Capsosiphon fulvescens, and Scytosiphon lomentaria. In conclusion, the poor harvest of laver in 1986 may result from such following problems as the decrease in vertical attachment range of laver and fouling problems as the decrease in vertical attachment range of laver and fouling organisms at 'Soppal' cultivation ground, prevalence of certain diseases, changes in environmental conditions, arrangement and maintenance of facilities for laver cultivation.
Lichen thalli of Dirinaria applanata heavily colonized on the twigs of dead or dying Rhododendron trees in Solok island, Jeonnam province in Korea. Pathogenesis of the lichen on the trees was investigated to find out the possibility of lichen as a causal agent. Histological examination of the lichen colonized twigs was attempted with differential staining technique. Lichen-forming fungus colonized only on the surface of bark and there was no direct penetration of fungal hyphae into the plant tissues. Symbiotic algae of the lichen was also examined. The isolated algal cells were inoculated on artificially induced wounds of the healthy trees. Histological examination of the inoculated tissues showed that some algal cells were successfully colonized inside the tissues without any pathogenic symptoms, even 2 months later, The extract of the lichen thalli was also examined using 10% of DMSO solution. Treated tissues showed no pathogenic symptoms, even 4 weeks later. The results suggested that the lichen was not directly involved in the death of the trees.
