  • This paper presents the Part 1 of the Questionnaire Survey on Marine Safety and VTS in the Philippine Coastal Waters. This part deals with respondents profiles; experiences onboard and ashore; familiar areas; and their subjective perception of marine risks- by factors and by areas. The subjects are chosen from different regions nationwide with connection and/or with maritime background. There are 202 responses returned and these are put into a database for analysis made through Excel programs and statistics references. The result of the nationwide responses show that 97 % of respondents have shipboard experiences onboard of different ships' types and sizes; and 88 % are directly involved in the navigation of ships. Risk Perception levels - by factors and by familiar areas - show a higher risk degree in the 3rd level ('Sometimes Increases Risks') and 4th level ('Often Increases Risk') in each respondents' response indices. The study finds that the most risky factor is the "Violation of Rules and Regulations" which has a high risk at 5th level (Very Often Increases Risk), and for the over-all familiar areas, the Manila Bay area (NCR region) garners the most risky perception, also, at the 5th level. It is, therefore, recommended by this paper to conduct a comprehensive review of the rules and regulations viable in each locality; strengthening the maritime traffic systems, structures and educating the stake-holders specifically in Manila Bay area and other busy waterways of the country. The ultimate goal of this paper is to gather information, analyze these data and develop a set of tools and techniques to be utilized as a guide in the improvement and development of maritime traffic safety in the country.

  • Background: Nitric oxide (NO) production has been described as a double-edged sword eliciting both pro- and anti-inflammatory effects in different immune reactions. This work was undertaken to investigate the immunoregulatory role of NO in experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) and experimental allergic uveitis (EAU). Method: We examined whether molsidomine (MSDM), a NO donor, administration to the myelin basic protein (MBP)- or interphotoreceptor retinoid binding protein (IRBP)-immunized rats could suppress EAE development by shifting toward the Th2 cytokine response. In the EAE experiments, the rats were treated orally with MSDM (10 mg/kg/day) at the early stage (-1~4 days) or throughout the experimental period (-1~15 days). Results: This resulted in significant amelioration of the disease and mild clinical symptoms, while MBP-immunization without MSDM administration showed severe EAE development. A marked reduction in inflammation was also observed in the spinal cord, indicating the crucial role of NO in the pathogenesis of EAE in in vivo. In the EAU experiments, a 24 h pre-treatment with MSDM prior to IRBP immunization resulted in significant inhibition of the disease. Furthermore, MSDM administration for 2 1 days completely reduced the incidence and severity of EAU. To investigate whether MSDM could modulate cytokine switching from Th 1 to Th2, culture supernatants of MBP- or IRBP-stimulated inguinal lymphocytes were analyzed. MSDM treatment enhanced IL-10 secretion but decreased IFN-${\gamma}$. IL-4 was undetectable in all groups. In contrast, the MBP-or IRBP-immunized rats without MSDM secreted high concentrations of IFN-${\gamma}$, but low concentrations of IL-10. Conclusion: In conclusion, NO administation suppresses EAE and EAU by modulating the Th1/Th2 balance during inflammatory immune responses. This work further suggests that NO may be useful in the therapeutic control of autoimmune disease.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze how well middle school students understand space geometrical concept related to a cylinder. To this end, we developed the test tool based on prior research and examined 433 middle school students in November and December, 2018. And in March 2019, we interviewed 4 students who showed some type of errors. The difference in the correct answer rate of the questions by the grade and gender was tested, and the error type was analyzed based on the student's responses to the questions to evaluate the spatial reasoning ability. The results of this study are as follows. First, the difference by graders was not statistically significant in the questions evaluating spatial visual ability. On the other hand, in the case of the two questions for evaluating spatial measurement ability and spatial reasoning ability, the difference in the correct answer rate between the 7th graders and 8th is not significant, but the difference between lower graders and 9th was significant. Second, there was no significant difference in the spatial geometric ability of all girls and boys participating in this study. Third, analyzing the student's error type for an item which assessed spatial reasoning ability, we found that there are various error types in relation to visual, manipulative, and reasoning errors.

  • Objectives: Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is defined as abdominal pain during menstruation period in the absence of an identifiable pathological lesion. Corydalis tuber (CT) is an herbal medicine that has an excellent effect in relieving pain and convulsions. The purpose of this study is to observe the effect of Corydalis tuber aqueous extracts (CTe) on primary dysmenorrhea. Methods: The rats were injected with estradiol benzoate subcutaneously for 10 days (2.5 mg/kg on the first and 10th days, and 1 mg/kg from the 2~9th day). Oxytocin 1 U/kg was treated by peritoneal injection 1 hour after the last 10th injection of estradiol benzoate. CTe 400, 200 and 100 mg/kg were administered orally, once a day for 10 days at 30 minutes after each estradiol benzoate treatment. The results of CTe were compared to those of IND 5 mg/kg orally treated rats. Results: As results of estradiol benzoate and oxytocin administration, noticeable decreases of body weights and gains, uterus weights were observed with congestion and enlargement of the uterus at gross inspections, and increases of abdominal writhing responses, uterus MDA levels, GSH contents, SOD and CAT activities. However, these oxidative stress mediated PD signs were dose-dependently decreased by 10 consecutive days of oral administration of three different doses of CTe 400, 200 and 100 mg/kg as comparable to those of IND 5 mg/kg in CTe 200 mg/kg. Conclusions: CTe had a significant improvement effect on primary dysmenorrhea in the PD rat model induced by estrogen benzoate and oxytocin.

  • Asthma is an inflammatory disease of airways that is induced by Th2 cytokines and inhibited by Th1 cytokines. In this study we wanted to investigate the effect of SCT and BJT on eosinophilla and cytokines of BALF in a mouse model established airway inflammmation. Asthma was induced to male c57/bl6 mice. Allergen-specific antibody responses, cytokine$(IL-4,\;IL-5,\;INF-{\gamma})$, and eosinophil inflammation of the airways were investigated on the BALF and splenocyte. SCT and BJT effectively induced $INF-{\gamma}$ and inhibited IL-4, IL-5 as well as eosinophilic inflammation when SCT and BJT were administered. Total Ig E level in the BALF decreased. SCT was more effectiveness than BJT. It is considered that SCT and BJT have faborable effect on the asthma because the asthma specific series of abnormalities in respiratory system were decreased.

  • Phytoecdysteroids with moulting hormone (MH) activity induce different responses in silkworms when used on different day of final instar, which can be manipulated for maximum benefit like early and uniform spinning behaviour, reducing crop loss and to increase cocoon yield. The results showed that application of this hormone on seed crop viz., CSR2, CSR4 and BL44 and BL67 in early stage of 5$^{th}$ instar i.e., at 72 hrs and 96 hrs though induced early and uniform spinning behaviour, there was an adverse effect by 9-36% on the economic characters like cocoon yield, cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight and also on fecundity etc. Application of this hormone in late stage of $5^th$ instar i.e., at the onset of spinning showed non-significant variations in some of the characters like cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, cocoon shell ratio and fecundity. The physiological implications of phytoecdysteroid in hastening the maturation events and synchronization of spinning activities in different breeds are discussed.

  • This study investigated associations between attachment and friendship. This study also examined the mediating effects of empathy on the association between two variables. Participants consisted of $4^{th}$ to $6^{th}$ grade elementary school children including 173 boys and 141 girls. Two elementary schools were located in Seoul and Bucheon. Children participated in a peer nomination interview. They nominated their three most liked peers. Children's responses to the best friend of the peer nomination identified the children's best friends. A Friendship Quality Scale measured children's positive friendship quality and friendship satisfaction. Children completed the Inventory of the Parent and Peer Attachment Scale that assessed maternal and paternal attachment. In addition, they completed a children's version of the Empathy Quotient that measured empathy. Pearson's correlation and Structural Equation Modeling were used to analyse the data. The results indicated that attachment had a direct influence on friendship network. Children who had the high levels of attachment security had large friendship network. However, attachment did not have a significant effect on friendship quality. Moreover, empathy had mediating effects on the association between attachment and friendship quality as well as the friendship network. The results of this research highlight the importance of attachment and empathy on children's friendship.

  • Background: Invariant Natural killer T (iNKT) cells, a distinct subset of CD1d-restricted T cells with invariant $V{\alpha}{\beta}$ TCR, functionally bridge innate and adaptive immunity. While iNKT cells share features with conventional T cells in some functional aspects, they simultaneously produce large amount of Th1 and Th2 cytokines upon T-cell receptor (TCR) ligation. However, gene expression pattern in two types of cells has not been well characterized. Methods: we performed comparative microarray analyses of gene expression in murine iNKT cells and conventional $CD4^+CD25^-$ ${\gamma}{\delta}TCR^-$ T cells by using Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) method. Results: Here, we describe profound differences in gene expression pattern between iNKT cells and conventional $CD4^+CD25^-$ ${\gamma}{\delta}TCR^-$ T cells. Conclusion: Our results provide new insights into the functional competence of iNKT cells and a better understanding of their various roles during immune responses.
