  • This study is about a hybrid lightweight cowl crossbeam structure with high rigidity and ability to absorb collision energy to support the cockpit module, which is an automobile interior part, and to absorb energy during a collision. It is a manufacturing process in which composite material bracket parts are inserted and injected into existing steel bars. When considering the mounting condition of a vehicle, the optimization of the fastening condition of the two parts and the mechanical properties of the composite material is acting as an important factor. Therefore, this study is about a composite material having a volume content of Polyamide(PA) and Glass Fiber used as a composite material for a composite material-metal hybrid cowl crossbeam. As a result of analyzing the physical properties of the PA/GF composite material, experimental data were obtained that can further enhance tensile strength and flexural strength by using PA66 rather than PA6 used as a base material for the composite material. And based on this, it contributed to securing the advantage of lightening by using high-stiffness composite material by improving the high disadvantage of the weight of the cowl crossbeam material, which was made only of existing metal materials.

  • This study aimed to research the local production of conductive composite yarn, a source material used in textile-type electrodes and circuits. The physical properties of an internationally available conductive composite yarn were analyzed. To manufacture the conductive composite yarn, we selected one type of conductive yarn with Ag-coated polyamide of 150d 1 ply, along with two types of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with circular and triangular cross-sections, both with 150d 1 ply. The conductive composite yarn samples were manufactured at 250, 500, 750, and 1000 turns per meter (TPM). For both conductive composite yarn samples manufactured from two types of PET filaments, the twist contraction rate of the sample with a triangular cross-section was stable. Among the samples, the tensile strength of the sample manufactured at 750 TPM was the highest at approximately 4.1gf/d; the overall linear resistance was approximately 5.0 Ω/cm, which is within the target range. It was confirmed that the triangular cross-section sample manufactured with 750 TPM had a similar linear resistance value to the advanced product despite the increase in the number of twists. In future studies, we plan tomanufacture samples by varying the twist conditions to derive the optimal conductive yarn suitable for smartwear and smart textile manufacturing conditions.

  • Physical properties of the composite yarn using low-melting(LM) polyester/Tencel were investigated with air-jet texturing conditions such as temperature, take-up overfeed, yarn speed and air pressure. Surface morphology, microstructure, tensile property, glossiness were evaluated. Surface morphology of a composite yarn had more damaged and loosened structure according to increase of take-up overfeed, yarn speed and air pressure. Crystallinity was affected by parameters such as temperature, yarn speed, take-up overfeed and air pressure and especially, yarn speed was most effective for increase of crystallinity. Also, it was found that temperature and air pressure had significantly affected tensile properties of a composite yarn. The glossiness of yarn increased with increase of temperature, yarn speed and air pressure.

  • The development of high tenacity, high modulus monofilaments from Polypropylene/Clay nanocomposite has been investigated. Pure sodium montmorillonite nanoclay was modified using hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HTAB) via an ion exchange reaction. Pure and modified clay were characterized through X-ray diffraction, FTIR and TGA. The modified clay was melt blended with polypropylene (PP) in presence of a swelling agent. Composite filaments from PP/Clay nanocomposite were prepared at different weight percentages of nanoclay and the spinning and drawing conditions were optimized. The filaments were characterized for their mechanical, morphological and thermal properties. The composite PP filaments with modified clay showed improved tensile strength, modulus and reduced elongation at break. The composite filaments with unmodified clay did not show any improvement in tensile strength but the modulus improved. The sharp and narrow X-ray diffraction peaks of PP/nanoclay composite filaments indicate increase in crystallinity in presence of modified clay at small loadings (0.5 %). The improved thermal stability was observed in filaments with modified as well as unmodified clays.

  • Composite membranes having different mixing ratio of Wool(SCMK) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) were prepared by dissolving wool/PET in hexafluoro-2-propanol(HFIP), casting the obtained solution on a glass plate and evaporation the solvent in the presence and absence of an electric field. The internal structure of the prepared membrane was investigated using polarise microscope dyeing and dye permeation method. In the composite membrane prepared under electric field, both components were micro mixing, while in the membranes prepared under nonelectric field, the two components formed a random sea/island structure according to different mixing ratio. Such characteristic membrane structure was influenced the permeation behavior of C.I. Acid Red 118 through the membranes from an aqueous solution.

  • In this study, carbon/phenol composites were prepared from carbon fiber preform and phenol resin by RTM(resin transfer molding) process. And changes in the properties of the composite according to the pre-treatment of phenol resin was mainly studied. RTM process conditions were deduced from viscosity and thermal analysis of phenol resin which were rheometer and thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA). RTM process was performed under various injection and molding temperature. Characterization of the prepared C/P composites were evaluated by various analysis. Morphology of composites was analyzed by Micro-CT(MCT), Mechanical properties of composites were measured through the flexural properties. As results, volatile impurities of phenol resin were effectively removed at resin pre-treatment temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and composite was sufficiently cured at molding temperature of $180^{\circ}C$.

  • In comparison to metal alloys, braided composite features a high impact resistance and crash energy absorption potential, and also it still remained competitive stiffness and strength properties. Braiding angle is one of the most important parameters which affect the mechanical behaviors of braided composite. This paper presents transverse low velocity impact failure behavior analysis on the carbon 3D triaxial braided composite tube with the braiding angle of $20^{\circ}$, $50^{\circ}$ and $80^{\circ}$. The flexural behaviour of 3D triaxial braided composite tube under bending loads was studied by conducting quasistatic three point bending test. Also, the low velocity impact responses of the braided composite tubes were also tested to obtain load-displacement curves and energy absorption. Consequently, the increase of the braided angle, the peak load also increases owing to the bigger bending stiffness.

  • A new 2-D braided textile metal matrix composite was developed and characterized. The constituent materials consist of PAN type carbon fiber as reinforcements and pure aluminum as matrices. The braided preforms of different braider yarn angles were fabricated. For a fixed bundle size of 12K, three braider yarn angles was selected: $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $60^{\circ}$. The braided preforms were infiltrated with pure Al by vacuum assisted squeeze casting. Through the investigation of melt pressing methods and the effects of process parameters such as applied pressure, and pouring temperature, the optimal process conditions were identified as follows: applied pressure of 60MPa, pouring temperature of $800^{\circ}C$. Using the measured geometric parameters, 3-D engineering constants of metal matrix composites have been determined from the elastic model, which utilizes the coordinate transformation and the averaging of stiffened and compliance constants based upon the volume of each reinforcement and matrix material.

  • The polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polypyrrole (PPy) composite films have been prepaxed by exposing the PAN films containing oxidizing agent such as ferric chloride or cupric chloride to pyrrole vapor. The formation of PPy in PAN was confirmed by means of IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy and the X-ray differaction study showed the amorphous structure of PPy. The breaking strength of PAN/PPy composite films was 3-5 times lower but the breaking elongation of them was 4-5 times higher than that of PAN film.
