Nation-Building in Independent Myanmar: A Comparative Study of a History Textbook and a Civic Textbook

  • This article examines the image of the nation of the Union of Myanmar (Burma) by comparing the history textbook and the civic textbook prescribed in state schools during the period of independence from 1948 to 1958. After the Second World War, the political conditions gave the way for the formation of the Union of Myanmar composed of ethnic nationals in Myanmar. To shape the national identity, the newly-founded independent nation in 1948, introduced textbooks in history and civics for the purpose of nation building. The paper concludes that the history textbook illustrated the golden ages of the Myanmar kingdom by way of national consolidation and portrayed ethnic nationals as homogenous; on the other hand, the civic textbook defined a citizen as one who is born and raised in Myanmar; it also included migrant Asians such as Chinese and South Asians in the fold. The history textbook aspired for the national consolidation of ethnic nationals for the strength and prosperity of the country while the civic textbook required cooperation from both ethnic nationals and migrant Asians for peace and development of the country and the world.

Development of Dietary Life Education Textbook and Teaching Manual for Creative Activities in Elementary School (초등학교 중학년의 창의적 체험활동을 위한 활동중심의 식생활 교재 및 지침서 개발)

  • This study was conducted to develop a dietary life education textbook and teaching manual for creative activities of elementary school students in middle grade. First, we extracted dietary life related contents from textbooks for third and fourth grade and created systematization of contents involving educational objectives, goals, contents and activities. The development of textbook and teaching manual were based on systematization of contents. The textbook was composed of five major chapters, which were 'nutrition', 'cooking', 'environment and hygiene', 'food' and 'dietary culture'. Each major chapter having six to seven smaller chapters, adding up to a total of 34 smaller chapters. The textbook was in activity format so that can be readily and directly used in actual classes. The textbook had fun characters and various activities (particularly a lot of cooking activities) to deliver the main theme of each chapter. The teaching manual was composed of background, goal, teaching plan and teaching point. The smaller chapters had learning goal, teaching-learning resources, important points, teaching-learning process and reference material. In evaluation after operating the model school, the developed textbooks were suited for students' needs and cognitive level. This textbook can be utilized at creative activities consisting of ten to fifteen students.

On Science Textbooks and Related Teaching Learning Materials (과학교과서와 그에 관련된 교수 학습자료의 활용 실태 조사)

  • The purpose of the study was to establish a new view of textbook which may contribute to the abolishment of the instruction mainly based on the only textbook and to the promotion of creativities of students. We first reviewed science textbooks and related teaching-learning materials of foreign countries with emphasis on the relationship among textbook and teaching-learning materials and practical use of them. In western countries the roles of traditional textbook has been changed. That is, various kinds of materials such as reading book, work-book, worksheet, experimental guidebook, filmstrips are used to raise effect of instruction besides of traditional type of textbook. Secondary, we identified the problems related to the science textbook-view of textbook, textbook contents, practical use of textbook-through opinion survey administered to principals akd teachers of elementary schools. The results of the survey are as follows; Concerning the view of textbook, most teachers did not recognize textbook as an absolute materials. They thought that textbook contents could be taught reorganized according to their judgements. On the contrary, teachers responded to the question of whether or not they follow contents of textbook as they are presented in it were approximately 30%. Further, more than 75% of them have seldom used instructional materials except textbooks. In order to revise the problems of our present textbook as stated above, a new view of textbook should be established. We, above all, established 4 basic premises for searching a new view of textbook. 1) Textbook should not be considered as the only material but as being at the center of various teaching -learning materials. 2) The importance of textbook should be illustrated Among Curriculum, textbook and related teaching-learning materials, instruction and evaluation. 3. Textbook contents should not be regarded as definitely fixed or absolute ones. 4. Human being can understand environment more fully by commanding his swnsory organ multilaterally. Under these premises we disscussed about curriculum and textbook, textbook, and instruction, akd evaluation method.

  • Information literacy education is a important role of today's school libraries. So the development of information literacy curriculum and textbook is necessary to establish educational role of school libraries more firmly. The purpose of this study is to examine the development of new information literacy textbook, School Library and Information Literacy published in 2011. For this, this study investigated the status of information literacy education and instructional media in Korea, the United States and Japan. After all, this study presented the textbook's development progress, curriculum, contents and method of application.

  • The purpose of this study was to perform research on the development of core course textbooks in the LIS field. The process of textbook development proposed in this study can also be a useful reference for developing the textbooks for other, non-core courses. The textbook development procedure used was as follows; 1) investigating and analyzing the main textbooks of LIS core courses domestically and abroad, 2) deriving optimal curriculum content from job analysis results, 3) gathering comment and feedback from professors teaching core courses, 4) proposing a final, three-tiered table of contents for an optimal textbook. The textbook table of contents proposed as a result of this research relates to the core subjects of: Introduction to Library and Information Science, Information Services, Library Management, Information Organization, Information Retrieval, and Library Fieldwork. We suggested chapter and section levels for all subjects, and list all of the details that should be dealt with in each section; instructors are then able to select from these options at their discretion.

Development and Application of the Student Activity-centered High School Science Textbook Model: Focused on Earth Science (학생 활동 중심의 고등학교 과학 교과서 모형 개발 및 적용: 지구과학 영역을 중심으로)

  • The purposes of this study were to develop the student activity-centered science textbook model in high school and explore the field application possibility. For development of student activity-centered science textbook model, we conducted a literature survey about foreign science textbook and science curriculum and we developed the textbook development framework based on 7E learning model. Based on framework, we developed student activity-centered science textbook model about achievement standards 'systems and interaction - earth systems'. A development model is the total amount of five class periods and the various objectives were reflected in pursuit systems thinking & STEAM. 1~4 class periods, learning content composed of student activity-centered exploration activities that organically associated to make final products. Fifth class period was presented to explore job and career. A development model was applied to high school class for one time study. Applying the result of field study, students were responded positively in interested about science class, textbook contents, made final product. Through this study, if science textbook was made on the basis of the revised student activity-centered science textbook model, students were lead to positive change in science class.

  • Developing textbook evaluation criterion is as important as textbook development in education. Home economics subject has been involved in textbook evaluation since 1995, at which the first home economics textbook was under the national authorization system in South Korea. There has been little research on home economics textbook evaluation criterion even though there were more studies using textbook analysis. The purposes of this study were to explore the reason why subject perspectives were reflected on the textbook evaluation criterion, the relationships between the perspectives presented by national curriculum and technology home economics textbook evaluation criterion, and the future direction for developing textbook evaluation criterion. So this study was related to analyze practical arts(technology home economics) textbook evaluation criterion and the meaning of subject perspectives in textbook evaluation criterion, to drive perspectives consistently presented by the 2007 revised and 2011 revised national curriculum, to analyze the relationships between the perspectives in national curriculum and textbook evaluation criterion, and to provide the future direction for textbook evaluation criterion development. Textbook evaluation criterion is very important because it provides subject perspectives for developing textbook, delivers the core concepts and unique values of our subject, and provides the direction for teacher education. According to the analysis of both national curriculum, the perspectives such as management competency, life competency, practical experience, integrative competency for understanding individual and family, career and life planning, and life problem-solving were presented in this study. Implication for future research would be needed to develop the factors of textbook evaluation criterion based on the perspective presented by national curriculum.

Analysis of AI Digital Textbook Keywords Using Text Mining (텍스트 마이닝을 활용한 AI 디지털교과서 키워드 분석)

  • This study aims to explore the potential issues and challenges associated with the development, introduction, utilization, and stabilization of AI digital textbook, as well as to identify tasks necessary to address these challenges. We collected and analyzed data from domestic news articles and previous research literature related to "AI digital textbook" to derive key keywords using a comprehensive text analysis approach with Bigkinds and Textom. Through Bigkinds, we conducted keyword trend analysis, associated word analysis, and relationship analysis. Using Textom, we performed keyword frequency analysis, N-gram analysis, TF-IDF(Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency) analysis, and network analysis. This approach allowed us to identify the main issues related to the development, implementation, utilization of AI digital textbook and explore the necessary tasks to address these challenges.

  • This study aimed to understand the effectiveness of teachers' backgrounds and digital textbook training experiences on digital competency, understanding of the digital textbook, perception of the digital textbook effectiveness and attitude toward the digital textbook. A total of 101 valid elementary, middle and high school teachers participated in the survey and the data were analyzed using the SPSS statistical package. As a result, male teachers showed higher digital competency than female teachers. Also, teachers who experienced with digital textbook training understood more about the digital textbook. It was suggested that a newly structured professional development program for the digital textbook considering teachers' personal backgrounds should be developed.

  • As environmental issues have become a worldwide concern after the 20th century, the idea and the term of 'green growth development' has become familiar to the public. After 2008, the green growth development dramatically became an important ideology in Korea; thus industries, studies and product investments in relation are in active progress. Following the trend, the latter major unit of the middle school textbook "Technology & Home Economics" was named the revision of elementary, middle and high school textbooks in 2009. The learning goal of 'green' or 'eco-friendly' of the revised edition of the textbook will guide the middle school students to have better understanding of the issues of clothing habits and the environment. Furthermore, students will be able to apply the 'green' concepts in their real life and put eco-friendly clothing habits into action. Thus, the practice of effective learning will depend on the quality of the current issue of the textbook. Therefore this study analyzes the eco-friendly contents of the semi-unit from 7 different textbooks and presents an example of textbook production to the preliminary teacher of home economics.
