외국인 암 환자를 위한 국내 방사선치료 영문 텍스트 가독성 분석 (Analysis of Readability of Text in English for Radiation Therapy for Foreigner Patient with Cancer in South Korea)

  • This study compared and analyzed with the United States(USA) to evaluated the level of readability of radiotherapy information (English text) provide to foreign patients with cancer by medical institutions in South Korea (KOR). A total of 20 the KOR and USA medical hospitals in 10 each provide information for radiation therapy technology were selected. The readability was comparatively analyzed a total of three aspects (lexical, syntactic, cohesion and readability) by using a Coh-Metrix on-line web program. In readability respect, the mean of the Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) was lower in the KOR (8.3) than in the USA (23.2), Flesch-Kincaid grade level (FKGL) was higher in the KOR than in the USA (14.2) indicating that KOR was less readable than the US (p<.05). In both KOR and USA, the reading level (literacy) of the English text for the radiation therapy was found to be higher than high school (FRE level 50 or lower). Therefore, text information in English for the radiation therapy to foreign patients with cancer should be lowered to elementary school level and read to improve the quality of medical services.

VDT화면에서 텍스트의 행간구분방법과 색상이 가독성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Background, Underline, and Color on Readability of Visually Displayed Text)

  • In this study, we examined the effects of background and underline on the readability of displayed text. The background was placed on every other line and the underline was done with every line of the text. The effect of adding color to the background and underline was also of primary concern. Twenty subjects were tested on their reading efficiency (i.e. time-to-read and comprehension) and subjective preference of different text format presented on a LCD. Result showed that for the background condition, the background with green format significantly decreased the time-to-read as compared to the format without any background. The results of ANOVA on comprehension and subjective preference were also consistent with this finding. For the underline condition, otherwise, the underline with yellow format yielded higher speed and better comprehension. The results imply that adding background or underlines with appropriate colors can be an additional and useful way of improving text readability.

자기안내식(自己案內式) 해설판(解說板) 글자 속성(屬性)에 따른 가독성(可讀性) 비교(比較)에 관한 연구(硏究) (Comparison of Readability by Text Attributes of Self-Guided Interpretive Signs)

  • 자기안내식 해설판의 정보전달 효과를 높이기 위해서는 해설판 글자의 가독성에 대한 이해가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 해설판의 글자속성에 따른 가독성을 각각 비교하였다. 2004년도 9-11월중 무등산도립공원 내 너덜겅 지역에서 총 1391명의 응답자를 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 본 연구에서 선정된 5개 글자속성(글자체, 글자정렬, 글줄간격, 글자간격, 한 줄의 글자수)의 가독성 비교 결과, 글자크기 58포인트의 경우 글자체는 'Hy 견명조', 글자정렬은 '양단정렬', 글줄간격은 190%(한글 2002), 글자간격은 10(한글 2002), 한 줄의 글자수는 25자일 때 각 글자속성의 가독성이 최적으로 나타났다. 최적 가독성으로 나타난 각각의 글자속성을 조합하여 제작한 해설판의 글자를 예시하였으며, 가독성과 관련하여 해설판 글자디자인과 추후 연구 문제에 대하여 토의하였다.

소형 스크린 상에서의 텍스트 가독성 향상을 위한 대각분할 칼럼 디자인과 평가 (The Design and Evaluation of a Diagonally Splitted Column to Improve Text Readability on a Small Screen)

  • 이제 스크린을 통한 독서는 아주 일상적인 일이 되었다. 특히 휴대폰, PDA, e북리더기 등 휴대형 정보기기의 등장으로 우리는 언제 어디서나 스크린을 통해 수많은 텍스트 기반 컨텐츠를 감상할 수 있게 되었다. 종래의 많은 연구는 스크린을 통한 독서가 종이에 비해 독서수행도가 저하되는 것으로 지적하고 있다. 더욱이 휴대형 정보기기에서는 스크린에 표시할 수 있는 텍스트의 행폭과 행수가 감소하므로 가독성은 더욱 악화될 수밖에 없다. 본 연구는 소형 스크린에서의 텍스트 가독성에 영향을 미치는 매개변수를 탐색하고 새로운 텍스트 레이아웃을 통해 가독성을 개선할 수 있는 방법을 제안하였다. 본 연구에서는 기존의 단조로운 직사각형 칼럼을 대각으로 분할하여 독서에서 리드미컬한 시선의 흐름을 유도할 수 있는 새로운 텍스트 레이아웃을 제안하고 직사각형 칼럼과 대각분할 칼럼에 대한 비교실험을 실시하였다. 그 결과 독서에 대한 주관적 만족도와 문장이해도 차원에서 양자 간에 유의한 차이가 발견되지 않았지만, $4000mm^2$$8000mm^2$크기의 소형 스크린에서는 대각분할 칼럼에서의 독서속도가 각각 18.9%, 34.0%향상되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 대각분할 칼럼에서의 획기적인 독서수행도 개선의 원인을 보다 세밀하게 분석하기 위해 $4000mm^2$크기/3:1비례 화면의 조건에서 대각분할 칼럼을 구성하는 좌삼각 칼럼과 우삼각 칼럼의 독서수행도 비교실험을 실시하였다. 실험결과 직사각형 칼럼과 비교하였을 때 좌삼각 칼럼의 경우 21.1%, 우삼각 칼럼의 경우 67.6% 만큼 독서속도가 향상되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 결국 우삼각 칼럼에서의 독서속도 향상이 대각분할 전체의 독서속도 향상에 크게 기여하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 소형 스크린에서 대각분할이 독서수행도를 획기적으로 개선할 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었고 이는 소형 모바일 정보기기의 텍스트 레이아웃 디자인에 충분히 활용 가능할 것으로 기대된다.

EDGE: An Enticing Deceptive-content GEnerator as Defensive Deception

  • Cyber deception defense mitigates Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) with deploying deceptive entities, such as the Honeyfile. The Honeyfile distracts attackers from valuable digital documents and attracts unauthorized access by deliberately exposing fake content. The effectiveness of distraction and trap lies in the enticement of fake content. However, existing studies on the Honeyfile focus less on this perspective. In this work, we seek to improve the enticement of fake text content through enhancing its readability, indistinguishability, and believability. Hence, an enticing deceptive-content generator, EDGE, is presented. The EDGE is constructed with three steps: extracting key concepts with a semantics-aware K-means clustering algorithm, searching for candidate deceptive concepts within the Word2Vec model, and generating deceptive text content under the Integrated Readability Index (IR). Furthermore, the readability and believability performance analyses are undertaken. The experimental results show that EDGE generates indistinguishable deceptive text content without decreasing readability. In all, EDGE proves effective to generate enticing deceptive text content as deception defense against APTs.

Developing the Korean EFL Readability Formula (KRF)

  • It has long been shown that Korean EFL students have not practiced extensive reading in school curriculum. Their vocabulary knowledge is limited and a tool for measuring text readability for them has hardly been developed and used. The study aimed to check the current situations on the above issues and develop a reading framework appropriate for extensive reading within the national English curriculum, including the Readability Formula in Korean EFL contexts (KRF). The study consists of four steps. The study does a survey to check the current Korean EFL situations on the issues, suggests a new vocabulary learning size, develops a readability formula as a tool for measuring text difficulty based on the newly suggested vocabulary size, and finally validates the formula with various kinds of English books, including the primary and secondary school English textbooks. It is expected that this study will provide a model for the vocabulary size and the readability index for extensive reading in EFL contexts.

Designing a large recording script for open-domain English speech synthesis

  • This paper proposes a method for designing a large recording script for open domain English speech synthesis. For read-aloud style text, 12 domains and 294 sub-domains were designed using text contained in five different news media publications. For conversational style text, 4 domains and 36 sub-domains were designed using movie subtitles. The final script consists of 43,013 sentences, 27,085 read-aloud style sentences, and 15,928 conversational style sentences, consisting of 549,683 tokens and 38,356 types. The completed script is analyzed using four criteria: word coverage (type coverage and token coverage), high-frequency vocabulary coverage, phonetic coverage (diphone coverage and triphone coverage), and readability. The type coverage of our script reaches 36.86% despite its low token coverage of 2.97%. The high-frequency vocabulary coverage of the script is 73.82%, and the diphone coverage and triphone coverage of the whole script is 86.70% and 38.92%, respectively. The average readability of whole sentences is 9.03. The results of analysis show that the proposed method is effective in producing a large recording script for English speech synthesis, demonstrating good coverage in terms of unique words, high-frequency vocabulary, phonetic units, and readability.

당, 나트륨, 트랜스 지방 교재의 교사용 지도서 지문의 난이도 평가 (Evaluation of the Readability of Teacher's Guide Book for Nutrition Education-Sugar, Na, Trans Fat)

  • This study is attempted to propose a quality evaluation method of the materials for nutrition education by applying readability test of printed materials for nutrition education. It is significantly important for the teaching class with nutrition education materials to consider students understanding level and education materials topics or choosing words in developed printed materials. This study performed an evaluation of the readability of text in teachers' guidebook, which is devised for elementary school students' education material about sugar, sodium and trans-fat and attempted to estimate the developing materials through analyzing difficulty level of the text. We utilized "The Teacher's Guidebook for Cooking Activity" that had been developed for elementary school by Ministry Education Science and Technology, as the readability evaluation standard. Compared with the average score of readability about "The Teacher's Guidebook for Cooking Activity", $72.94{\pm}6.85$, "Sugar Guidebook" was 70.94{\pm}7.46, "Sodium Guidebook" was $68.76{\pm}14.50$, and "Trans-fat Guidebook" was $58.87{\pm}10.79$. Considering the subjects careers or ages, "The Teacher's Guidebook for Cooking Activity" has little deviation by the subjects careers or ages and was "intermediate" or "easy" level; however, "Sugar Guidebook", "Sodium Guidebook", "Trans-fat Guidebook" was "intermediate" or "difficult" level (p < 0.05). Readability score was especially low when the contents of some particular subjects were too professionalized or scientific terms were frequently used, and thes results were definitely seen in the "Sodium Guidebook" and "Trans-fat Guidebook". With Cloze test score, the readability evaluation will be using as an evaluation tool for the nutrition education materials.

휘도대비가 가독성에 미치는 영향에 대한 실험 연구 - 화면 크기와 가독량을 고려한 휘도대비 가이드라인 - (An Experimental Study on the Impacts of Luminance Contrast Upon Readability in VDT Environments)

  • The study investigates the effects of luminance contrast, which is the contrast between text color and background color, on readability in VDT environments. Our research goals are to prove that the relationship between luminance contrast and readability is not linear and to explore the best luminance contrast level for optimal readability. We conducted two pretests before the main experiment to determine the operational readability and luminance contrast levels. We also conducted a controlled main experiment, in which luminance contrast, reading amount and screen size were tested in terms of its relation with readability. The results of the main experiment indicate that the readability has a non-linear relation with luminance contrast, and the optimal readability is obtained when the contrast is equal to 0.951. Furthermore, the non-linear function and optional point stay constant regardless of screen size and reading amount. The paper ends with implications of the results that maximal contrast does not always mean the optimal readability.

독서교육시스템을 위한 텍스트수준 측정 공식 구성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Modelling Readability Formulas for Reading Instruction System)

  • 본 고의 목적은 초등학생용 독서자료의 텍스트수준에 영향을 미치는 요인들을 규명하여 텍스트수준 측정 공식을 구성함으로써 텍스트의 수준 평가를 자동화하는 데에 있다. 컴퓨터로 계량화할 수 있는 언어적 요인들을 대상으로 표본집단에 부여된 텍스트수준 점수와의 상관관계를 검토한 결과 글자수, 어절수, 이형어절수, 문장수, 단락수 요인이 텍스트수준을 결정하는 요인으로 드러났다. 단순회귀분석을 통해 도출된 회귀방정식들 중에서 이형어절수 모형이 최적의 공식으로 드러났으나, 중회귀분석을 한 결과 이형어절수요인과 새 어절출현비율요인을 결합한 모형은 설명력이 더욱 향상된 공식으로 밝혀졌다. 공식에 따라 측정된 텍스트수준 점수는 학년 내에서 매우 세분된 단계까지 나타내고 있으므로 각 학생별로 그들의 독서능력에 적합한 자료를 추천할 수 있다.
