  • In this paper. a simple high-speed crash test rig for members of vehicle was developed for the improvement of crashworthiness of vehicle's side rail. The cart hanging the specimen is accelerated up to 35 mph by the force of freely dropping weight and 1:3 accelerating pulleys. The cart with shock absorbers travels on the rail roads, so it does not transfer any additional vibration to the specimen. To measure the test results, two types of accelerator are considered. the one is a strain gage type and the other is a piezo type. The test rig is rated good to test the specimen like a side rail of vehicle as developing the vehicle's structures in the early design stage.

  • Tumble flow test rig has been used as the useful tool in the developing intake system because major flow pattern induced by intake port of DOHC engine is tumble. Angular momentum of in-cylinder tumble flow can not be directly measured by impulse torque meter in the test rig like that of in-cylinder swirl flow due to rotational axis of the flow. Therefore the adaptor to transform tumble to swirl flow must be adapted in the test rig. In this study, using the commercial CFD code STAR-CD, we studied the effects on measured results due to the variation of the major design variables in the adaptor, tube length(L), tube diameter(D) and cylinder height(H). The effect of the attached angle($\theta$) of the test head to the adaptor also was simulated.

  • The test facility of a 1/60-scale model for train-tunnel systems has been recently developed to investigate the effects of tunnel portal shapes, hood shapes and air-shafts for reducing the micro-pressure waves radiating towards the surroundings from the tunnel exit. The present test rig has been advanced from a 1/70-scale facility at NLR in Netherlands. The NLR test rig has the two-wise guidance system that needs two ears attached on the external surface of a model train nose. Therefore, their train models have irregular nose shapes. The main characteristics of the present facility are that the train model is guided by only one wire from the compressed air launcher to the absorber parts of test facility and the wire guidance hole is located at the axial center of a train model. In the present test rig, after a train model is launched, the air jet from the launcher does not enter the tunnel model. Experimental results were compared with numerical predictions to prove the performance of the test facility.

  • This paper described operation and vibration characteristics of a 'tail-fan' anti-torque performance test system. KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) developed a 'tail-fan' anti-torque system of a helicopter and a performance test-rig to test the performance of the tail-fan. The performance test-rig consists of driving, supporting and rotating parts. In the process of the performance test, firstly, operation test of the test-rig were carried out to verify design specifications. Secondly, natural frequencies of fan blade and test-rig were measured respectively. Lastly, to find the operation rotating speed for the performance test, vibration test were carried out using accelerometers on tail gear box. The performance test conditions of the tail-fan to avoid a resonance were found from the fan-plot and vibration test results. The tail-fan performance tests were well done safely.

  • This study was conducted to develop and verify a torque application device for use in a mechanical power-circulation test rig for 5.5 MW wind turbine gearboxes. The design and analysis of the torque application device was conducted. In addition, the torsional stiffness of the test rig was calculated using the rotational angle measurements for each of the components. The calculated stiffness of the test rig was $231.13kN{\cdot}m/rad$ for a clockwise torque application. The rated torque can be applied when the stiffness of the gearbox is greater than $1,064,400kN{\cdot}m/rad$ for a clockwise torque application. Because of the limited rotational angle of the test rig, the potential application of the rated torque is determined according to the torsional stiffness of the test gearbox.

  • This paper describes a new test rig for identification of rotordynamic force coefficients of squeeze film dampers (SFDs) in automotive turbochargers (TCs). Prior studies have mainly concentrated on relatively large-sized SFDs used in aircraft engines, turbocompressors, and turbopumps. The main objective of the current study is to propose a test rig for identification of dynamic force coefficients of small-sized SFDs (a journal diameter of ~11 mm). The current test rig consists of a journal, a SFD cartridge, four support rods, an upper structure, a data acquisition (DAQ) system, and an oil circulation unit. The annular gaps between the journal outer surface and SFD cartridge inner surface create SFD film lands. The damper has two parallel film lands separated by a central groove, having an axial length and depth of 3 mm. Each film land has a length of 4 mm with a $40{\mu}m$ radial clearance. The static load and dynamic impact tests identify the structural characteristics (i.e., stiffness and natural frequency) of the journal and assembled test rig. The measurements show good agreement with predictions. The SFD performance data from this test rig will be used to develop innovative TC rotor systems with improved NVH and reliability characteristics incorporating advanced SFD technology.

  • The performance of the railway bogie is classified into the stability and the steering performance. Testing for the bogie stability is conducted on the roller rig. But testing for the bogie steering performance on test facility is very difficult, so the testing for the vehicle curving performance is conducted on the real curve track. And it is desirable to test on the full scale test rig, but it caused many problems relating to test costs, test time. To overcome these problems, the small scale test rig is actively used in the field of bogie stability. Thus, in this paper, we have studied the scale track to test the bogie steering performance. For this, we designed the 1/5 scale test track equivalent to radius 200 curve and confirmed the validity of the testing for the bogie steering performance on the scale curve track through the testing using 1/5 scale bogie.

  • A winding bend rig is designed to overcome the drawbacks of the conventional bend rig for measuring springback ratio of a strip or plate. Using the present bend rig, springback ratios are measured and they are compared with ones that obtained by using simple beam theory and tensile test. Theoretically, there should be no difference between the two values as far as the simple beam theory holds true for the bending test. But, within the scope of our tests, there is a difference of 5% between the two values since the specimen under bend test is subjected to a transverse shear force and friction force on the surface of the specimen.

  • Elimination of squeal noise occurred during brake application is an important task for the improvement of comforts in an industrial forklift. In this paper, a test rig was developed which was possible for testing of brake noise and an experimental measurement on squeal noise was performed. The causes of the brake noise are identified by experimenting how the factors such as automatic transmission fluid and rpm of drive axle affect the squeal. In order to identify the squeal characteristics, the signal analyses for noise are performed by using frequency spectrums. Also, brake test using a forklift was carried out to confirm the reliability of test results by using a test rig comparing with the occurrence of squeal noise. Experimental results showed that the tendencies of occurrence of squeal noise are well agreed at two test methods by using the test rig and forklift.
