Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) technology is being applied to various fields such as the soil volume calculation and the displacement measurement of terrain, tunnels and dams. This study develops a 3D terrain processing platform for automated earth work using a terrestrial laser scanning data as the software prototype. The developed software provides cells with geo-technical information for planning work to an integrated system.

As 3D geospatial information is demanded, terrestrial laser scanners which can obtain 3D model of objects have been applied in various fields such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), structural analysis, and disaster management. To acquire precise data, performance evaluation of a terrestrial laser scanner must be conducted. While existing 3D surveying equipment like a total station has a standard method for performance evaluation, a terrestrial laser scanner evaluation technique for users is not established. This paper categorizes and analyzes error sources which generally occur in terrestrial laser scanning. In addition to the prior researches about categorizing error sources of terrestrial Laser scanning, this paper evaluates the error sources by the actual field tests for the smooth in-situ applications. The error factors in terrestrial laser scanning are categorized into interior error caused by mechanical errors in a terrestrial laser scanner and exterior errors affected by scanning geometry and target property. Each error sources were evaluated by simulation and actual experiments. The 3D coordinates of observed target can be distortedby the biases in distance and rotation measurement in scanning system. In particular, the exterior factors caused significant geometric errors in observed point cloud. The noise points can be generated by steep incidence angle, mixed-pixel and crosstalk. In using terrestrial laser scanner, elaborate scanning plan and proper post processing are required to obtain valid and accurate 3D spatial information.

Nowadays 3D terrestrial laser scanners record high precision three-dimensional coordinates of numerous points on an object surface in a short period of time. So terrestrial laser scanner is applied to a wide variety of fields including geodesy, and civil engineering, archaeology and architecture, and emergency service and defence, etc. This study deals with the potential application of terrestrial laser scanner in the reconnaissance surveying. The results shows that terrestrial laser scanner is possible to extract the linear features and the positioning accuracy of objects measured by total station surveying is comparative to that by terrestrial laser scanner. Thereafter, it is expected that the potential applications of terrestrial laser scanning will be more increased by combining terrestrial laser scanners with airborne LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) and photogrammetric technology.
Recently laser scanning technologies become widely used in many areas of the modern economy. In the following paper authors show a potential spectrum of use Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) in diagnostics of reinforced concrete elements. Based on modes of failure analysis of reinforcement concrete beam authors describe downsides and advantages of adaptation of terrestrial laser scanning to this purpose, moreover reveal under which condition this technology might be used. Research studies were conducted by Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Gdansk University of Technology. An experiment involved bending of reinforced concrete beam, the process was registered by the terrestrial laser scanner. Reinforced concrete beam was deliberately overloaded and eventually failed by shear. Whole failure process was tracing and recording by scanner Leica ScanStation C10 and verified by synchronous photographic registration supported by digital photogrammetry methods. Obtained data were post-processed in Leica Cyclone (dedicated software) and MeshLab (program on GPL license). The main goal of this paper is to prove the effectiveness of TLS in diagnostics of reinforced concrete elements. Authors propose few methods and procedures to virtually reconstruct failure process, measure geometry and assess a condition of structure.

Laser scanning technology with high positional accuracy and high density automation will be widely applied in vast range of fields including geomatics. Especially, the development of laser scanning technology enabling long range information extraction is increasing its full use in civil engineering. The purpose of this study is to extract accurate highway geometric information taking the advantages of scanning technology. Fulfilling this goal, the information of target highway's three-dimensional data was obtained through terrestrial laser scanning technology. In accordance with the result from target highway's geometric information extraction using the information above, laser scanning technology showed faster speed and better accuracy on highway geometric information extraction with reduced cost compared to traditional methods.

According to the increasing demand for 3D indoor spatial information, the utilization of a terrestrial laser scanner comes to the fore. However, the research for the comparison between a terrestrial laser scanning method and a traditional surveying method is insufficient. The paper evaluated the time-efficiency and the locational accuracy of an AMCW type and a direct TOF type of terrestrial laser scanning methods in comparison with the observation using a total station. As a result, an AMCW type showed higher time-efficiency than a direct TOF type and the RMSE between the two types of data was ${\pm}1mm$. Moreover, the terrestrial laser scanning method showed twice higher time-efficiency than the observation using a total station and the RMSE between the two data was ${\pm}3.4cm$. The results indicate that the terrestrial laser scanning method has better profitability and performance for 3D indoor modeling than the traditional survey using a total station. In the future, a terrestrial laser scanner can be efficiently utilized in the construction of 3D indoor spatial information.

Since considerable time passed after completion of dam construction, Methods to judge the safety and/or to manage effectively have extreme limitation and restriction. Behavior analysis based on one point (site) by such as surface settlement gauge is typically performed in order to define deformation characteristic of dam. However, deformation characteristics of entire dam can not be analyzed by this method. This study adopted state-of-the-art terrestrial laser scanning technology, and developed the technology to analyze the entire deformation of dam. The analysis was compare with the outputs of surface settlement gauge to confirm the performance of 3D terrestrial laser scanning technology. As a result, through analyses of laser scanning data and the surface settlement gauge data, the studied dam shows behavior of deformation by own weight of dam. It is possible to confirm that the dam is entering the stage of stabilization presently.
Terrestrial laser scanner provides highly accurate, 3D images and by sweeping a laser beam over a scene or object, the laser scanner is able to record millions of 3D points' coordinates in a short period, so becoming distinguished in various application fields as one of the representative surveying instruments. This study deals with 3D building boundary extraction using Terrestrial Laser Scanner. The results shows that high accuracy 3D coordinates for building boundaries are possibly acquired fast, but terrestrial laser scanner is a ground-based system, so "no roofs", and "no lower part of building" due to trees and electric-poles, etc. It is expected that the combination of total station, terrestrial laser scanner, airborne laser scanner with aerial photogrammetry will contribute to the acquisition of an effective 3D spatial information.

Terrestrial Laser Scanner and Airborne Laser Scanning is one of the state of art surveying equipments. So This study deals with the combined use of mobile TLS(Terrestrial Laser Scanner) with ALS(Airborne Laser Scanning) to extract shoreline's topography information. These two systems have their own pros and cons. Mobile TLS can capture the facades of a low story building along the shoreline fast and quickly. Meanwhile, Due to viewpoint restrictions of ALS data collection, the amount of detail, which is available for the building facades is very limited. Therefore, it is recommended that the co-registration and geo-referencing methods of both two should be developed and the application of both system for shoreline mapping also should be investigated.
Laser scanning technology is a maturing measurement technology which is capable of obtaining 3D measurement data of objects with high-accuracy, high-resolution and in a short time. Laser scanners are used more and more as surveying instruments for various applications. This paper describes the procedure of 3D data acquirement using terrestrial LiDAR and section drawing extraction through a series of processing for remodeling the interior of a department building. Accurate drawings are needed for improvement construction of building interior. However if the design drawings of that time of construction work were lost or damaged or actual dimensions of drawings differ from those of design drawings, the interior should be resurveyed. In this study, the extraction process of interior plane figures were suggested through using laser scanning and related reverse engineering software
