  • Corrosion of steel reinforcing in concrete deteriorated by freezing/thawing and carbonation was characterized. Concrete specimens were prepared using various kinds of cements such as ordinary portland cement (type I), low heat portland cement (type IV, belite rich cement), sulphate resistance portland cement (type V), blast furnace slag portland cement and ternary blended cement. Of various cements, type V and type IV with lower $C_3A$ content revealed better steel corrosion resistance after freezing/thawing and carbonation. $C_3A$ content in cement might affect freezing/thawing resistance in sea water.

  • This research investigates the actual data and construction technology of the massive bottom slab placed by $23,000m^3$ concrete quantity in site of the in-ground type LNG receiving terminal having 20,000kl storage capacity. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimum mix design and control the actual concreting procedures including concrete production, transportation, placement, vibrating and curing in site. For this purpose, the optimum mix design using ternary blended cement(furnace slag cement+fly ash) and under piping method having 11 gates and 7 distributors are selected. As test results of actual construction, concrete placement is finished during 68hours with good success and obtained the good quality of the fresh and hardened concrete including slump, air contents, no-segregation, compressive strength and low hydration heat. Also, actual data for all of concrete procedures are proved successful and satisfied with our specifications.

  • This study is about the rheological properties of cement slurry using admixtures. The variables are the type of cement(Type I, II, IV, V) and the substitution ratio of admixtures such as fly ash and slag. As a result of measuring the fluidity of various types of cement slurry at the early stage, type 2, type 4 and type 5 showed the similar property. The fluidity of type 1 and ternary blended cement was low. it is thought that it is because of the high $C_3$A content. The cement slurries containing mineral admixtures were superior in the property of fluidity retention.

  • This paper is to investigate the engineering properties of the concrete incorporating different types of low heat generating binders subjected to various W/B. As expected, it is found that increase of W/B resulted in a decrease of hydration heat and compressive strength. It also showed that the application of high early strength and low carbon type mixture had favorable strength development at early and later age, while hydration heat showed rather higher than existing low heat mixture.

  • The mechanical properties and morphologies of cellulose blends with two different additives were compared. Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) of ethylene glycol (EG) were used as additives in the formation of cellulose blends through the solution blending. The properties of blends were varied with the additive content in the polymer matrix. The ultimate tensile strength and initial modulus of the cellulose blends were highest for a blend PVA content of 30 wt% and for a blend EG content of 10 wt%, respectively. Ternary blended systems of composition of cellulose/PVA (70/30=w/w)/EG were also prepared by the solution blending method with different EG contents. The mechanical properties of these systems were found to be optimal for EG contents of up to 40 wt%. The mechanical properties of the cellulose ternary blend films were superior to those of the cellulose binary blend films. The oxygen permeability transmission rate ($O_2TR$) monotonically decreased with increasing EG content in the ternary blend films. Overall, the mechanical properties of the cellulose blend films were found to be better than those of pure cellulose films.

  • Post-tensioned concrete pavement(PTCP) was developed to built long-span concrete pavement(120 m span) and to maintain long-term service life(over 40 years) of concrete pavement. In the present study, research for high-durable concrete was conducted to utilize the advantage of PTCP construction method efficiently. First of all, 20% of fly ash(by binder weight) was replaced to control alkali silica reaction. Second, silica fume was applied to improve the water-permeability and early-age strength. Results of tests for mechanical properties, water-permeability resistance, and surface-scaling resistance of ternary blended cement concrete showed that the early-age strength was improved significantly with addition of silica fume. The water-permeability resistance was improved from "Low" to "Very Low"(ASTM C 1202). However, surface-scaling resistance was decreased with an increase of silica fume, therefore, content of silica fume should be kept in less than 5%(by binder weight) to assure field application considering durability. The results of air-void analysis showed that durability factors were improved since spacing factors were estimated as 250$\pm$15 micron in adjusted mixtures.

  • The purpose of this experimental research is to investigate the influence of cement types on the resistance to acid and sulfate. For this purpose, concrete specimens with three types of cement such as ordinary portland cement(OPC), binary blended cement(BBC), and ternary blended cement(TBC) were made for water-binder(W/B) ratios of 32% and 43%, and then according to JSTM C 7401, the appearance change and ratio of mass change of them were estimated through the immersion tests by 5% sulfuric acid, 10% sodium sulfate, and 10% magnesium sulfate solution, respectively. It was observed from the test result that the resistance against acid and sulfate increased with decreasing W/B ratio and those of BBC and TBC concretes were better than the case of OPC concrete from immersion tests of 91 days.

  • This study shows some results of concrete mixing design has 100 years life time. The ratios of ternary blended cement are 4 types. the ratios of blast furnace slag cement are 3 types. In this case study, 40%, 50% and 60% replacement ratio of blast furnace slag(BSF) to OPC are used, also 35:45:20, 30:35:35, 30:40:30 and 35:40:25 ratio of OPC:BSF:FA are used. The mixing design tests include slump, air content, compressive strength and thermal properties of concrete. The compressive strength tests are executed at the age of 3, 7, 28, 56, and 91 days. The coefficient of chloride diffusion is determined by NT Build 492 method. The purpose of this study is to shows the results of case studies as the ratio of blended cement varies.

  • The aim of research is inducing the optimum proportion of fly ash(FA) and blast furnace slag(BS) for ternary cement. In this research, hence, the fundamental properties of mortar mixtures were evaluated depending on various proportion of FA and BS. The results of the experiment, within the scope of the study, obtained the following conclusions. Flow of the mixtures was increased with addition of binary supplementary cementitious material(SCM), and especially, portion of FA. The air content of the mixtures was increased with addition of binary SCMs, while it was decreased with increased FA content. In the case of unit mass, increased value was obtained due to the increased air content within 25 to 45% of binary SCM content, while it was increased within 65 to 100% of binary SCM up to only 20% of FA content and decreased more than 20% of FA because of the low density of FA. The setting time of the mixtures was delayed with addition of binary SCM and FA. In the case of compressive strength, at 91-day age, the highest value was obtained with 25 and 45% of binary SCM with the proportion of FA to BS of 40 to 60. Therefore, based on the compressive strength, it is considered that the binary SCM content of 25 and 45% with the proportion of FA to BS of 2 : 3 is the most favorable conditions in this research scope.
