The fibroblast in the periodontal ligaments received various stress. Among them, compression and tension are quite important and they are related to the remodeling of tooth and alveolar bone. We studied the change of expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-8 (IL-8) in the fibroblasts of the periodontal ligaments by real-time RT-PCR and ELISA. In results, the relative activity of IL-6 mRNA in 2 hours after was 1.54${\pm}$0.08 and 1.00${\pm}$0.05 in control and test, respectively (P<0.05). Its 12 hours after was 1.23${\pm}$0.06 and 2.78${\pm}$0.14 in control and test, respectively (P<0.05). The relative activity of IL-8 mRNA in 2 hours after was 1.00${\pm}$0.05 and 0.24${\pm}$0.01 in control and test, respectively (P<0.05). Its 12 hours after was 1.23${\pm}$0.06 and 0.63${\pm}$0.03 in control and test, respectively (P<0.05). The concentration of IL-6 was 1.02${\pm}$0.16 ng/ml, 0.90${\pm}$0.14 ng/ml, and 1.32${\pm}$0.12 ng/ml (P<0.05) in control, 2, and 12 hours after, respectively. The concentration of IL-8 was 2.26${\pm}$0.17 ng/ml, 1.70${\pm}$0.26 ng/ml (P<0.05), and 0.84${\pm}$0.47 ng/ml (P<0.05) in control, 2, and 12 hours after, respectively. In conclusion, the expression of IL-6 was significantly increased after the application of the static compressive force, but IL-8 was significantly decreased. Considering their known function, their expression is quite important in tooth and bone resorption.
A mathematical model was proposed to analyze the damped motion of contact lens which is initially displaced from the equilibrium position. The model incorporates the differential equations and their numerical solution program, based on the formulations of restoring force arising from the capillary action in the tear-film layer between the lens and cornea. The model predicts the capillary action induced surface tension, time dependence of displacement of lens when it is released from the equilibrium position. It seems that the motion of lens is similar to the typical over-damped oscillation caused by the large viscous friction in the liquid layer between the cornea and lens. The effect of variables such as base curves, lens diameters and thickness of tear film layer were illustrated by the computer simulation of the derived program. The time required for the lens to return to the original position increases as the liquid layer thickness increases and it decreases as the diameter of lens increases. With the certain value of base curve the time interval is found to be minimum. The free vibrations of lenses were also simulated varying the parameters such as base curve, diameter, layer thickness. The resonant frequencies are inversely proportional to the liquid layer thickness and it increases as the lens diameter increases. The resonant frequency of lens has a maximum when the diameter is of certain value. If the external impulse or force of the same frequency as the natural frequency of contact lens acted on the cornea in vivo it may cause an excessive movement and thus it might cause the distortion 10 the lens or be pulled off the eye.
Pyeongpaesan (平肺散) has been used in Korea for many centuries as a treatment for respiratory disease. The effect of Pyeongpaesan (平肺散) on tracheal smooth muscle is not known. The purpose of the present study is to determine the effect of Pyeongpaesan (平肺散) on histamine and acetylcholine induced tracheal smooth muscle contraction in rats and guinea pigs. Guinea pig (500 g, male) and Sprague Dawley rats (200 g, male) were killed by $CO_2$ exposure and a segment (8-10 mm) of the thoracic trachea from each rat and guinea pig was cut into equal segments and mounted 'in pairs' in a tissue bath. Contractile force was measured with force displacement transducers under 0.5 g loading tension. The dose of histamine (His) and acetylcholine (Ach) which evoked 50% of maximal response ($ED_{50}$) was obtained from cumulative dose response curves for histamine and acetylcholine $(10^{-7}{\sim}10^{-4}M)$. Contractions evoked by His $(ED_{50})$ and Ach $(ED_{50})$ were inhibited significantly by Pyeongpaesan (平肺散). In guinea pig tracheal smooth muscle, the mean percent inhibition of acetylcholine induced contraction was 13.5% (p<0.05) after $10{\mu}l/ml$ Pyeongpaesan (平肺散), $64.6\(p<0.01)\;after\;30{\mu}l/ml$ Pyeongpaesan (平肺散), and $92.8\(p<0.01)\;after\;100{\mu}l/ml$ Pyeongpaesan (平肺散). In rat tracheal smooth muscle, the mean percent inhibition of acetylcholine induced contraction was $60.9\(p<0.01)\;after\;30{\mu}l/ml$ Pyeongpaesan (平肺散), and $91.2\(p<0.01)\;after\;100{\mu}l/ml$ Pyeongpaesan (平肺散). Also, in guinea pig tracheal smooth muscle, the mean percent inhibition of histamine induced contraction was $104.8\(p<0.01)\;after\;30{\mu}l/ml$ Pyeongpaesan (平肺散) and $142.3\(p<0.01)\;after\;100{\mu}l/ml$ Pyeongpaesan (平肺散). In rat tracheal smooth muscle, the mean percent inhibition of histamine induced contraction was $63.7\(p<0.01)\;after\;30{\mu}l/ml$ Pyeongpaesan (平肺散), and $107.5\(p<0.01)\;after\;100{\mu}l/ml$ Pyeongpaesan (平肺散). Propranolol $(10^{-7}M)$ slightly but significantly attenuated the inhibitory effects of Pyeongpaesan (平肺散). Following treatment with propranolol, the mean percent inhibition caused by $100{\mu}l/ml$ Pyeongpaesan (平肺散) fell to 15.7% (p<0.05) in guinea pig induced by acetylcholine contraction and the mean percent inhibition caused by $100{\mu}l/ml$ Pyeongpaesan (平肺散) fell to 22.3% (p<0.05) in guinea pig induced by histamine contraction and by $100{\mu}l/ml$ Pyeongpaesan (平肺散) fell to 28.7% (p<0.01) in rat induced by histamine contraction. Indomethacin and methylene blue $(10^{-7}\;M)$ did not significantly alter the inhibitory effect of Pyeongpaesan (平肺散). Also, I could find the effects of Pyeongpaesan (平肺散) and Pyeongpaesanga (平肺散加) morphine on the tracheal smooth muscle in guinea pig and rat did not change significantly. These results indicate that Pyeongpaesan. (平肺散) can relax histamine and acetylcholine-induced contraction of guinea pig and rat tracheal smooth muscle, and that this inhibition involves sympathetic effects and the release of cyclooxygenase products.

Pretension PSC (Prestressed Concrete) members are subjected to a certain limit of size as they are generally produced in the off-site plant and transferred to the site due to the large scale of the product on system. In this study, a portable pretensioning production system has been developed, which allow us to apply the pretension method on site. Considering that a 50m span PSC girder using the pretension method requires a pressing device to endure a large jacking force, the portable pretension production system has to ensure safety against such a large pretension jacking force. In this study, the portable pretensioning system to produce a 50m span pretension girder was manufactured by using CFT (Concrete Filled steel Tube) members. In order to understand the stability of the system and the behavior of the elements, a static loading test was conducted and the stability of the proposed portable pretensioning production system was confirmed. The developed portable pretension system was applied to several construction sites and was investigated the problems on site. During the pretension girder and slab members that was producted by this pretension system in construction site, it has be found the several advantages such as simple fabrication processes, reduction of prestress-loss, and a decrease of 15% compared with the fabrcation cost of post-tension girder. After due consideration of the problems, this portable pretension system will be improved.

Paeoniae Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix and Jakyakgamchotang have been used in Oriental Medicine for many centuries as a treatment for various disease. The purpose of the present study is to determine the effect of Paeoniae Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix and Jakyakgamchotang on narepinephrine(NE) induced contraction of isolated rabbit femoral artery. Rabbits (2.0kg, female) were killed by CO₂ exposure and a segment (8-10mm) of the aortic ring from each rabbit was cut into equal segments and mounted 'in pairs' in a tissue bath. Contractile force was measured with force displacement transducers under 1.5g loading tension. The dose of NE which evoked 50% of maximal response (ED/sub 50/) was obtained from cumulative dose response curves for NE (10/sup -7/~10/sup -4/M). Contractions evoked by NE (ED/sub 50/) were inhibited significantly by Paeoniae Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix and Jakyakgamcho-tang. The mean percent inhibition of NE induced contraction was 83.9% (p<0.01) after 150㎕/㎖ Paeoniae Radix, 101.1 %(p<0.01) after 150 ㎕/㎖, Glycyrrhizae Radix and 107.3%(p<0.01) after 150㎕/㎖ Jakyakgamcho-tang, Indomethacin slightly but significantly attenuated the inhibitory effects of Paeoniae Radix. Following treatment with indomethacin, the mean percent inhibition caused by 150㎕/㎖ Paeoniae Radix fell to 16.4% in femoral artery induced by NE contraction. Propranolol, ODQ, and L-NNA did not significantly alter the inhibitory effect of Paeoniae Radix. ODQ slightly but significantly attenuated the inhibitory effects of Glycyrrhizae Radix. Following treatment with ODQ, the mean percent inhibition caused by 150㎕/㎖ Glycyrrhizae Radix fell to 13.0% in femoral artery induced by NE contraction. Propranolol, indomethacin and L-NNA did not significantly alter the inhibitory effect of Glycyrrhizae Radix. L-NNA slightly but significantly attenuated the inhibitory effects of Jakyakgamchotang. Following treatment with L-NNA, the mean percent inhibition caused by 150㎕/㎖ Jakyakgamchotang fell to 13.8% in femoral artery induced by NE contraction. Propranolol, ODQ and indomethacin did not significantly alter the inhibitory effect of Jakyakgamcho-tang. These results indicate that Paeoniae Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix and Jakyakgamcho-tang can relax NE induced contraction of the isolated rabbit femoral artery, and that this inhibition related to nitric oxide.

Myocardial ${\alpha}_1-adrenoceptors$ have been shown to mediate a biphaslc inotropic response that was characterized by a transient decline followed by a sustained increasing phase in guinea pig ventricular muscle. Recently one group reported that an ${\alpha}_1-adrenoceptors-induced$ intracellular $Na^+$ decrease is linked to fast $Na^+$ channel inhibition and another group reported that it is linked to $Na^+$-$K^+$ pump activation by ${\alpha}_{1b}-adrenoceptors$. But until now, its mechanism is not clear. Therefore, to see whether the $Na^+$channel or $Na^+-K^+$ pump is related to a decrease in intracellular $Na^+$ activity and/or the negative inotropic response, and which ${\alpha}_1-adrenoceptor$ subtype was involved in the decrease in intracellular $Na^+$activity by phenylephrine, we used conventional and sodium selective microelectrodes, and tension transducer to determine the effects of ${\alpha}_1-adrenergic$ stimulation on membrane potential, intracellular $Na^+$ activity, and twitch force in guinea pig ventricular muscles. $10^{-5}$ M Phenylephrine produced a slight hyperpolarization of the diastolic membrane potential, a decrease or increase in $a_N^i_a$, and a biphasic inotropic response. The negative inotropic response accompanied by a decrease in intracellular $Na^+$activity, whereas in muscles showing a remarkable positive inotropic response without initial negative inotropic effect was accompanied by an increase in intracellular $Na^+$ activity. The decrease in intracellular $Na^+$ activity was apparently inhibited by WB4101, an antagonist of the ${\alpha}_{1a}-adrenoceptors$. The decrease in intracellular $Na^+$ activity caused by phenylephrine was not abolished or reduced by a block of the fast $Na^+$ channels. $V_{max}$ also was not affected by phenylephrine. Phenylephrine produced an increase in intracellular $Na^+$ activity in the presence of a high concentration of extracellular $Ca^{2+}$ (in quiescent muscle) or phorbol dibutyrate, a protein kinase C activator(in beating muscle). These suggest that the ${\alpha}_{1a}-adrenoceptors-mediated$ decrease in intracellular $Na^+$ activity may be related to the protein kinase C.

Radix Asteris has been used in Korea for many centuries as a treatment for respiratory disease. The effect of Radix Asteris on tracheal smooth muscle is not known. The purpose of the present study is to determine the effect of Radix Asteris on histamine induced tracheal smooth muscle contraction in rats and guinea pigs. Guinea pig(500g, male) and Sprague Dawley rats (250g, male) were killed by $CO_2$ exposure and a segment (8-10mm) of the thoracic trachea from each rat and guinea pig was cut into equal segments and mounted 'in pairs' in a tissue bath. Contractile force was measured with force displacement transducers under 0.5g loading tension. Contractions evoked by His ($ED_{50}$) were inhibited significantly by Radix Asteris. In guinea pig tracheal smooth muscle, the mean percent inhibition of histamine induced contraction was 120.5% (p<0.01) after $100{\mu}l/ml$ Radix Asteris. In rat tracheal smooth muscle, the mean percent inhibition of histamine induced contraction was 135.4% (p<0.01) after $100{\mu}l/ml$ Radix Asteris. Propranolol $(10^{-7}M)$ slightly but significantly attenuated the inhibitory effects of Radix Asteris. Following treatment with propranolol, the mean percent inhibition caused by $100{\mu}l/ml$ Radix Asteris fell to 44.6% in guinea pig induced by histamine contraction and by $100{\mu}l/ml$ Radix Asteris fell to 18.7% (p<0.05) in rat induced by histamine contraction. Indomethacin and methylene blue$(10^{-7}M)$ did not significantly alter the inhibitory effect of Radix Asteris. These results indicate that Radix Asteris can relax histamine induced contraction of guinea pig and rat tracheal smooth muscle, and that this inhibition involves sympathetic effects.
After towing rope connecting a barge to a tug was subdivided into multiple finite elements, then those dynamic models was established using Newton's second law and considering the external force and moment such as tension, drag, Coriolis force, gravity, buoyancy, and impact due to free surface acting on each element. While the previous research on the model of towing rope considered only translation, five-degree-of-freedom equations of motion except roll based on the body-fixed frame were established in this paper. All elements are connected by a spring and a damper, and the stiffness of the spring was set as the equivalent value of the real rope. In order to confirm the established multiple finite element model, various scenarios such as freely falling of towing rope in the air and above the free surface, accelerating of a tug which tows a barge connected by towing rope, and sinusoidal moving of a tug were set up and simulated. As the results, the trajectories of the tug, the barge, and the towing rope showed good tendencies to the ones of real expected situations.

When sea tide and wave velocity change, the behavior of silt protectors underwater changes, and a hydraulic force exceeding the anchor wave force is applied. In this study, the movement mechanism of a silt protector has been analyzed using the mass-spring method. The initial position of the silt protector was in the Jindo area near Gwangpo Port (742-1, Gyupori, Chongdo-myeon, Jindo-gun, Jeonnam, Korea). The tension required to exceed the holding power of the anchor was 0.05 m/s at 318 sec., 0.15 m/s at 77 sec., 0.25 m/s at 43 sec., and 0.3 m/s at 37 sec.. As the anchor started to move from the sea floor and the tide speed increased to 0.01 m/s, anchor movement start time shortened by an average of 11.2 sec.. Compared with when tide was the only affecting factor, the silt protector and anchor were found to have moved 19.7 % at 0.1 m/s, 7.6 % at 0.15 m/s, 5.8 % at 0.2 m/s, 4.3 % at 0.25 m/s and 2.8 % at 0.3 m/s, showing an increase. When wave effect was added to the tide, anchor movement started when the flow rate was slow 7.6 % of the time. With a high flow velocity, anchor movement started without any significant difference less than 4.3 % of the time. When tide speed exceeded 0.13 m/s and the direction of the waves matched, the silt protector was not able to perform due to collisions with surrounding sea structures. When installing a silt protector, the fluid flow situation and the silt protector situation must be carefully analyzed using the mass-spring method to apply the result found in this study.
This study was accomplished for appreciation of the mandibular moments according to antero- posterior movement of pivot placed on the lower natural dentition. For this study, 20 subjects(male, $21\sim30$ yrs., average age 24) in the category of normal occlusion were selected, and the intraoral Vitallium clutches were cast and fabricated for each subjects. A 2-dimension PSD(Position Sensitive Detector, Hamamatsu Photonics Co., Japan) was attached to maxillary clutch in a mode of three dimensional control and LED (Light Emit Diode, Hamamatsu Photonics Co., Japan) was set up on mandibular clutch. Both clutches were set into oral cavity of each subjects and adjusted. Then the subjects were allowed to intercuspated with maximal bite force while the pivoting ball in the mid-line moving from anterior toward posterior position. The displacement scales were recorded by CCD camera(Sony, CCD-TR-705) and VCR, The conclusions were as follows : 1. When the subject was allowed to bite the metal pivoting ball in the midline of lower dentition with maximal bite force voluntarily while moving from lower central incisor to canine, 1st premolar, End premolar, 1st molar and 2nd molar. The lever actions on the pivot were revealed in all subjects. The equilibrium of moment were revealed on the pivots of 1st premolar(14 subjects), End premolar(4 subjects), and canine(2 subjects) areas. 2. The changes of loading on the TMJ according to antero-posterior positional changes of metal pivoting ball were able to recognize as follow. Compression on the TMJ was increased when the pivot moves anteriorly from the equilibrium point, and tension on the TMJ was increased when posteriorly. 3. 13 subjects were recognized their habitual chewing sides(Rights, Left8), and 7 subjects were not. During maximal biting, mandible was displaced toward their habitual chewing sides on the metal pivoting ball in the frontal plane. 4. In cephalometric analysis, the average genial angle of 20 subjects was $116.75^{\circ}$ and the average mandibular body length was 79.77mm. The equilibrium points of mandibular moment were positioned more posteriorly in the subjects having larger Genial angle than in the smaller(p<0.05). Relationships among the angle between FH plane and occlusal plane, the angle between occlusal plane and mandibular plane , and mandibular body length were not significant(p>0.05).
