  • Potentials of AR CDM project in North Korea are assessed and feasible land area for AR CDM project is estimated. According to our estimation, There could be 515,000 hectares of forest lands deforested before 1990 in North Korea and 8,854 hectares at the regional level of Gae-sung City, which are eligible for AR CDM project, based on researches of satellite image analyses conducted from 1980's to 1990's. A baseline scenario assumed 44.73 tones of carbon stored in soil per hectare with no vegetation above ground remained during the project period following the default value of IPCC's Good Practice Guidance for LULUCF considering soil structure, climate and land use of the project area. The scenario also assumes that black rocust (Robinia pseudoacacia) is planted and the CDM project is implemented for 20 years. The costs for producing greenhouse gases CER (certified emission reduction) credits include costs of tree planting and forest management, and costs of project negotiation and transactions for issuing the credits. It is estimated that 376 tones of carbon dioxide per hectare can be accumulated and 503 temporary CER credits per hectare and 265 long-term CER credits per hectare could be produced during the project period. It is estimated to cost US$ 4.04 and US$ 7.67 to provide one unit of temporary credit and long-term credit, respectively. These values can be regarded as the cost of conferring emission commitment of a country or a private entity. However, it is not clear which option is better economically because the replacement periods are different in these two cases.

  • As the amount of $CO_2$ emission in Korea is ranked 9th and the increasing rate of $CO_2$ emissions highest in the world, it is strongly necessary to devise methods to decrease the amount of $CO_2$ in each industry as the basis of establishing environmentally sustainable production system. This paper aims to identify the characteristics of $CO_2$ emissions from construction wastes throughout the simplified LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and suggest the strategic guideline for the construction waste management plan to decrease $CO_2$. As a result of LCA on the case of a high-rise residential building project, total sum of $CO_2$ emission generated from construction wastes appeared as 6,818,123kg-$CO_2$ and $CO_2$ emission per unit floor area as 21.01kg-$CO_2/{\beta}{\ge}$. The principal waste materials generating more than 95% of $CO_2$ are materials such as reinforcing bar, temporary materials, cement, ready-mixed-concrete, concrete products, and tile, which have relatively high unit emission rate of $CO_2$ in the process of production. Besides, more than 92% of $CO_2$ was generated from the activities such as structure work, plaster work, temporary work, and tile and stone work, which are generally executed in the early phase of the whole construction period. Reflecting these results, the guideline for the construction waste management plan was recommended. If the waste management plan is established considering the guideline suggested, there would be high potential to decrease the amount of $CO_2$ generated from construction wastes.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the vegetation structure of Zone 2 of Mudeungsan National Park Old Trail. A total of 60 survey plots were installed to survey the forest structure, and TWINSPAN and DCA analysis classified them into 5 communities. The community I was classified into Deciduous broad-leaf tree, II into Pinus densiflora-Quercus serrata, III into Quercus serrata, IV into Lindera erythrocarpa, and V into Quercus mongolica. The grouped communities showed some differences in species compositions according to elevation. In the four communities except for community IV, Styrax japonicus and Sasa borealis formed a dominant population in understory layers and in shrub layers, respectively, and the current community forms are expected to be maintained. Monitoring of vegetation succession of lower vegetation after temporary flowering and withering in the ridges developed in the shrub layers in communities II through IV is required. In the long-term aspect, the competition between the pine tree and oak tree communities requires observation of a decrease in the power of the pine tree community. Mudeungsan National Park's Old Trail ecologically valuable as it has a vegetation structure that is distinctively classified according to altitude and is a habitat of Lindera sericea, the flagship species of Mudeungsan National Park. It means that the excellent forest ecosystem of Old Trail must be conserved through sustainable utilization.

  • Due to the global low growth trend, urban shrinkage is a major issue of urban policy in major industrialized countries. According to the research results of the KRIHS(Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements, 2016), 23 out of 77 cities in Korea were diagnosed as continuous or temporary shrinking cities. However, the criterion for diagnosing shrinking cities remain on the simple demographic side, and the spatial shrinkage pattern of the city is not considered. Therefore, this study diagnosed urban shrinkage phenomenon considering the characteristics of Yeong-ju, a poly-centric city, by using the population gradient curve, which is one of the urban spatial structure analysis methods. As a result of the diagnosis, Yeong-ju turned out to be a shrinking city with the population density and the slope of population density increasing. In the case of area of Dong, a sprawl phenomenon in which the population density of the CBD and the slope of the population density were decreased was shown. And in the case of Punggi-eup, a simple shrinkage phenomenon in which only the population density of the CBD was decreased was shown. The results show that even within a city, the pattern of spatial change can be different for each centers. In the case of a city with a poly-centric structure, the implications for the individual diagnosis of not only the entire city but also the detailed area were drawn.

  • This study analyzed the most frequently used navigation cases in a desktop environment. As a result of the research, GNB induces users' search as the top element of the search structure and can place color, text, icon, and image elements. LNB could be classified in the form of a dropdown, flyout, dropline and mega menu. In this study, the navigation structure of Interpark and Interpark among open markets used by users was analyzed. G-Market's GNB has a two-tier structure with color, text, image, and icon elements, and Interpark has a three-tiered horizontal label. Interpark's GNB drew attention by placing a badge on the seasonal label, which is a temporary content section, unlike G-market. It can be seen that the LNBs of both shopping malls have flyout menus that protrude when you mouse over the category menu arranged in a vertical text form under the logo placed on the left. The flyout menu has a complex structure consisting of the layout of the mega menu. This study is meaningful in revealing user experience elements by analyzing the GNB and LNB of shopping malls these days where internet shopping is increasing.

  • A self-supported temporary excavation method called Inclined Earth Retaining structure (IER) has been developed by improving an existing excavation method. The stability of the IER was proved with both model tests and field tests. Especially, the results of the model tests proved that the lateral displacement of a model retaining wall was significantly reduced in clay. In this study, the applicability of the IER installed in the soft clay ground is estimated by analyzing survey data collected in the construction field. The results of FE analysis show that the lateral displacement of the IER decreased by 70.9% of that of a single row, self-supported retaining wall using the same number of H-piles. Thus, using the IER method in the soft clay ground will increase the stability of the excavated ground with the effect restraining its lateral displacement. Furthermore, using Deep Cement Mixing (DCM) to the upper half embedded depth of front support is recommended as a subsidiary method of reducing the lateral displacement of IER in the soft clay ground based on FE analysis results.

  • As the recent structure construction is constructed as a large-scale and deep underground excavation in close proximity to the building, the installation of retaining wall and supporters (Struts) has become complicated, and the number of supporters to avoid interference of the structural slab has increased. This construction process becomes a factor that causes an increase in construction joints of a structure, leakage and an increase in wall cracks. In addition, this reduced the durability and workability of the structure and led to an increase in the construction period. This study planned to dismantle the two struts simultaneously as a plan to reduce the construction joints, and corrected the earth pressure by assuming the reaction force value by the initial earth pressure and the measured data as the response ratio. After recalculating the corrected earth pressure through the iterative trial method, it was verified by numerical analysis that simultaneous disassembly of the two struts was possible. As a result of numerical analysis applying the final corrected earth pressure, the measured value for the design reaction force was found to be up to 197%. It was analyzed that this was due to the effect of grouting on the ground and some underestimation of the ground characteristics during design. Based on the result of calculating the corrected earth pressure in consideration of the response ratio performed in this study, it was proved analytically that the improvement of the brace dismantling process is possible. In addition, it was considered that the overall construction period could be shortened by reducing cracks due to leakage and improving workability by reducing construction joints. However, to apply the proposed method of this study, it is judged that sufficient estimations are necessary as there are differences in ground conditions, temporary facilities, and reinforcement methods for each site.

  • In the case of occurring marine oil pollution, it is the most effective way that to prepare all the necessary response resources in advance and to respond to incidents, but there are limits in reality. Therefore, may be an important alternative ways to use a fishing vessel registered in the affected area by massive marine oil pollution efficiently. In the United States and other developed countries, it is can be found that temporary response program by local fishing vessels(VOO program) has been developed and operated. This study was examined for sweeping arm system suitable for domestic small fishing vessels. The selected small vessel was as the model of Coastal gill-net and compound fishing vessel with classes of 2.5~3.5tons, length 8~9m, breath 2.5~2.8m, horsepower 200~250 HP and FRP materials. The developed equipment was designed that can be easily mounted on the model ship and portable structure. For increasing the field practicality, the weight of each part was composed less than 10kg for easy assembly and disassembly.

  • The bucket platform is a new structure suitable for construction of offshore bridge foundations and providing the temporary support for equipments and labour. The platform can be subjected to moment loading due to the eccentric loading or the horizontal load by wave and wind. Therefore, a three dimensional finite element analysis was performed to evaluate the moment bearing capacity of the bucket platform, varying soil density, the diameter and embedment depth of the bucket. The numerical modeling was verified and compared with the moment-rotation curve from a field loading test. The uniform sandy ground was assumed and the moment load was applied at the top plate of the platform, increasing bucket rotation. The moment-rotation relations were analyzed to determine the moment capacity, which was influenced by the embedment depth and diameter of the bucket. Finally, a preliminary design equation was suggested to estimate the moment bearing capacity.

  • In general steel sheet piles are used in the containment system, which are vertical barrier systems for waste disposal and landfill purposes, and roads in excavation for temporary structure. This paper presents case study of the use of an interlocking sheet pile for water and containment. Cut-off Z-type sheet pile joints are investigated to determine their permeability from the field test. Four different joint sealing materials are used in field test. The results showed joint permeability is significant time-dependent and joint-dependent. These are explored and conclusions on permeability characteristics of different sealants are noted. A case study gives a design example as well as suggestion on permeability and water tightness can be implemented in using the sheet pile barrier in civil and environment works. From the test results, the effective sealing programs of sheet pile interlocks are suggested.
