Spatial precipitation data is one of the essential components in modeling hydrological problems. The estimation of these data has achieved significant achievements own to the recent advances in remote sensing technology. However, there are still gaps between the satellite-derived rainfall data and observed data due to the significant dependence of rainfall on spatial and temporal characteristics. An effective approach based on the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model to correct the satellite-derived rainfall data is proposed in this study. The Mekong River basin, one of the largest river system in the world, was selected as a case study. The two gridded precipitation data sets with a spatial resolution of 0.25 degrees used in the CNN model are APHRODITE (Asian Precipitation - Highly-Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation) and PERSIANN-CDR (Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks). In particular, PERSIANN-CDR data is exploited as satellite-based precipitation data and APHRODITE data is considered as observed rainfall data. In addition to developing a CNN model to correct the satellite-based rain data, another statistical method based on standard deviations for precipitation bias correction was also mentioned in this study. Estimated results indicate that the CNN model illustrates better performance both in spatial and temporal correlation when compared to the standard deviation method. The finding of this study indicated that the CNN model could produce reliable estimates for the gridded precipitation bias correction problem.
Reliable terrestrial rainfall observations from satellites at finer spatial resolution are essential for urban hydrological and microscale agricultural demands. Although various traditional "top-down" approach-based satellite rainfall products were widely used, they are limited in spatial resolution. This study aims to assess the potential of a novel "bottom-up" approach for rainfall estimation, the parameterized SM2RAIN model, applied to the C-band SAR Sentinel-1 satellite data (SM2RAIN-S1), to generate high-spatial-resolution terrestrial rainfall estimates (0.01° grid/6-day) over Central South Korea. Its performance was evaluated for both spatial and temporal variability using the respective rainfall data from a conventional reanalysis product and rain gauge network for a 1-year period over two different sub-regions in Central South Korea-the mixed forest-dominated, middle sub-region and cropland-dominated, west coast sub-region. Evaluation results indicated that the SM2RAIN-S1 product can capture general rainfall patterns in Central South Korea, and hold potential for high-spatial-resolution rainfall measurement over the local scale with different land covers, while less biased rainfall estimates against rain gauge observations were provided. Moreover, the SM2RAIN-S1 rainfall product was better in mixed forests considering the Pearson's correlation coefficient (R = 0.69), implying the suitability of 6-day SM2RAIN-S1 data in capturing the temporal dynamics of soil moisture and rainfall in mixed forests. However, in terms of RMSE and Bias, better performance was obtained with the SM2RAIN-S1 rainfall product over croplands rather than mixed forests, indicating that larger errors induced by high evapotranspiration losses (especially in mixed forests) need to be included in further improvement of the SM2RAIN.
Rainfall data from three different types of rain gauge system have been collected for the summertime rain event at Mokpo in the Korean peninsula. The rain gauge system considered in this paper is composed of three tipping-bucket rain gauges with 0.1, 0.2, and 0.5 mm measuring resolutions, the Optical Rain Gauge (ORG), and the PARSIVEL (PARticle SIze and VELocity). The PARSIVEL rainfall rate has been considered as the reference for comparison since it gave good resolution and performance on this event. Comparison with the PARSIVEL rainfall rate gives the results that the error and temporal variation of rainfall rate are simultaneously reduced with increasing the averaging interval of rainfall rate or decreasing the size of tipping bucket. This suggests that the estimated rainfall rate must be optimized, differently for the type of tipping-bucket rain gages, by minimizing the averaging interval of rainfall rate under the condition satisfying the given performance of rainfall rate.
Nowadays the amount of data obtained from advanced weather radars is growing to provide higher spatio-temporal resolution. Accordingly radar data compression is important to use limited network bandwidth and storage effectively. In this paper, we proposed a hierarchical compression method for weather radar data having high spatio-temporal resolution. The method is applied to radar reflectivity and evaluated in aspects of accuracy of quantitative rainfall intensity. The technique provides three compression levels from only 1 compressed stream for three radar user groups-signal processor, quality controller, weather analyst. Experimental results show that the method has maximum 13% and minimum 33% of compression rates, and outperforms 25% higher than general compression technique such as gzip.

A high quality, long-term, high-resolution precipitation dataset is an essential in climate analyses and global water cycles. Rainfall data from station observations are inadequate over many parts of the world, especially North Korea, due to non-existent observation networks, or limited reporting of gauge observations. As a result, satellite-based rainfall estimates have been used as an alternative as a supplement to station observations. The Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation (CHIRP) and CHIRP combined with station observations (CHIRPS) are recently produced satellite-based rainfall products with relatively high spatial and temporal resolutions and global coverage. CHIRPS is a global precipitation product and is made available at daily to seasonal time scales with a spatial resolution of 0.05° and a 1981 to near real-time period of record. In this study, we analyze the applicability of CHIRPS data on the Korean Peninsula by supplementing the lack of precipitation data of North Korea. We compared the daily precipitation estimates from CHIRPS with 81 rain gauges across Korea using several statistical metrics in the long-term period of 1981-2017. To summarize the results, the CHIRPS product for the Korean Peninsula was shown an acceptable performance when it is used for hydrological applications based on monthly rainfall amounts. Overall, this study concludes that CHIRPS can be a valuable complement to gauge precipitation data for estimating precipitation and climate, hydrological application, for example, drought monitoring in this region.

This study derived the Flood-Inducing-Rainfall (FIR) and the Flood-Inducing-Runoff (FIRO) from the radar-gage composite data to be used as the basis of the flood warning initiation for the urban area of Seoul. For this, we derived the rainfall depth-duration relationship for the 261 flood events at 239 watersheds during the years 2010 and 2011 based on the 10-minute 1km-1km radar-gauge composite rainfall field. The relationship was further refined by the discrete ranges of the proportion of the flooded area in the watershed (FP) and the coefficient variation of the rainfall time series (CV). Then, the slope of the straight line that contains all data points in the depth-duration relationship plot was determined as the FIR for the specified range of the FP and the CV. Similar methodology was applied to derive the FIRO, which used the runoff depths that were estimated using the NRCS Curve Number method. We found that FIR and FIRO vary at the range of 37mm/hr-63mm/hr and the range of 10mm/hr-42mm/hr, respectively. The large variability was well explained by the FP and the CV: As the FP increases, FIR and FIRO increased too, suggesting that the greater rainfall causes larger flooded area; as the rainfall CV increases, FIR and FIRO decreased, which suggests that the temporally concentrated rainfall requires less total of rainfall to cause the flood in the area. We verified our result against the 21 flood events that occurred for the period of 2012 through 2015 for the same study area. When the 5 percent of the flooded area was tolerated, the ratio of hit-and-miss of the warning system based on the rainfall was 44.2 percent and 9.5 percent, respectively. The ratio of hit-and-miss of the warning system based on the runoff was 67 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively. Lastly, we showed the importance of considering the radar-gauge composite rainfall data as well as rainfall and runoff temporal variability in flood warning system by comparing our results to the ones based on the gauge-only or radar-only rainfall data and to the one that does not account for the temporal variability.
In this study, urban runoff analyses were performed using high resolution Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE), and variation of rainfall and runoff were analyzed to evaluate QPE data for urban runoff analysis. The five drainage districts (Seocho3, 4, 5, Yeoksam and Nonhyun) around Gangnam station were chosen as study area, the area is $7.4km^2$. Rainfall data from KMA AWS (34 stations), SKP AWS (156 stations) and Gwanduk radar were used for QPEs in Seoul area. Four types of QPE(QPE1: KMA AWS, QPE2: KMA+ SKP AWS, QPE3: Gwangduk radar, QPE4: QPE2+QPE3) of 6 events in July 2013 were generated by using Krigging and conditional merging. The temporal and spatial resolution of QPEs are 10 minutes and 250 m, respectively. The complex pipe network were treated as 773 manholes, 772 sub-drainage districts and 1,059 pipelines for urban runoff analysis as input data. QPE2 and QPE4 show spatial variation of rainfall by sub-drainage districts as 1.9 times bigger than QPE1. The peak runoff of QPE2 and QPE4 also show spatial variation as 6 times bigger than Gangnam and Seocho AWS. Thus, the spatial variation of rainfall and runoff could exist in small area such as this study area, and using high-resolution rainfall data is desirable for accurate urban runoff analysis.

Precipitation is a crucial component of water cycle and play a key role in hydrological processes. Traditionally, gauge-based precipitation is the main method to achieve high accuracy of rainfall estimation, but its distribution is sparsely in mountainous areas. Recently, satellite-based precipitation products (SPPs) provide grid-based precipitation with spatio-temporal variability, but SPPs contain a lot of uncertainty in estimated precipitation, and the spatial resolution quite coarse. To overcome these limitations, this study aims to generate new grid-based daily precipitation using Automatic weather system (AWS) in Korea and multiple SPPs(i.e. CHIRPSv2, CMORPH, GSMaP, TRMMv7) during the period of 2003-2017. And this study used a machine learning based Random Forest (RF) model for generating new merging precipitation. In addition, several statistical linear merging methods are used to compare with the results of the RF model. In order to investigate the efficiency of RF, observed data from 64 observed Automated Synoptic Observation System (ASOS) were collected to evaluate the accuracy of the products through Kling-Gupta efficiency (KGE), probability of detection (POD), false alarm rate (FAR), and critical success index (CSI). As a result, the new precipitation generated through the random forest model showed higher accuracy than each satellite rainfall product and spatio-temporal variability was better reflected than other statistical merging methods. Therefore, a random forest-based ensemble satellite precipitation product can be efficiently used for hydrological simulations in ungauged basins such as the Mekong River.

A recent increase in extreme weather events and flash floods associated with the enhanced climate variability results in an increase in climate-related disasters. For these reasons, various studies based on a high resolution weather radar system have been carried out. The weather radar can provide estimates of precipitation in real-time over a wide area, while ground-based rain gauges only provides a point estimate in space. Weather radar is thus capable of identifying changes in rainfall structure as it moves through an ungauged basin. However, the advantage of the weather radar rainfall estimates has been limited by a variety of sources of uncertainty in the radar reflectivity process, including systematic and random errors. In this study, we developed an ensemble radar rainfall estimation scheme using the multivariate copula method. The results presented in this study confirmed that the proposed ensemble technique can effectively reproduce the rainfall statistics such as mean, variance and skewness (more importantly the extremes) as well as the spatio-temporal structure of rainfall fields.

In this study, we developed real-time urban stream discharge forecasting model using short-term rainfall forecasts data simulated by a regional climate model (RCM). The National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecasting System (CFS) data was used as a boundary condition for the RCM, namely the Global/Regional Integrated Model System(GRIMs)-Regional Model Program (RMP). In addition, we make ensemble (ESB) forecast with different lead time from 1-day to 3-day and its accuracy was validated through temporal correlation coefficient (TCC). The simulated rainfall is compared to observed data, which are automatic weather stations (AWS) data and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA 3B43; 3 hourly rainfall with $0.25^{\circ}{\times}0.25^{\circ}$ resolution) data over midland of Korea in July 26-29, 2011. Moreover, we evaluated urban rainfall-runoff relationship using Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). Several statistical measures (e.g., percent error of peak, precent error of volume, and time of peak) are used to validate the rainfall-runoff model's performance. The correlation coefficient (CC) and the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) are evaluated. The result shows that the high correlation was lead time (LT) 33-hour, LT 27-hour, and ESB forecasts, and the NSE shows positive values in LT 33-hour, and ESB forecasts. Through this study, it can be expected to utilizing the real-time urban flood alert using short-term weather forecast.
