  • Lately there are many approaches for decreasing the retail prices for mobile telecommunication in response to higher demand of the consumer welfare. Related on this perspective, there have been many disputes how the MTR (mobile termination rate)s from the whole market has influences on the consumer prices at the retail market. Therefore, we need a timely review about the possibility of the reduction of retail prices with MTR policies. The purpose of this paper is to study the relationship between MTR and retail prices. For this purpose, we can identify three kinds of arguments by reviewing the previous literatures. We empirically analyze the relationship with latest European data and Korean annual data. Furthermore, we also examine whether the relationship would depend on the competition structure. The results imply that decreasing MTR would result in reduction of the retail prices but the effect would be enhanced by improvement of market concentration.

  • This paper proposes an R&D opportunity scan framework for information and telecommunications company in aging society. The framework consists of trend analysis, market-oriented search, technology-oriented search, and R&D Portfolio development. We identify technology themes in the market-oriented search by developing market scenarios and analyzing a new business model framework. And then we search prospective technologies in the technology-oriented recess by technology scanning and patent analysis. By matching technology themes with prospective technologies, generate an R&D portfolio. Finally, we evaluate the risk of the proposed R&D portfolio.

  • Edge computing, which is computing on the edge of the network, is becoming a market value as a means of overcoming the fear of communication disconnection and delay reduction, which are the technical weaknesses of cloud computing. Edge computing is continuously expanding applications in various applications such as safety industry, smart factories, autonomous vehicles, mobile communications, and AR/VR. Looking at edge computing trends from Microsoft, IBM, HPE, and Dell EMC, current edge computing must be understood as an integral binding technology and not as a simple complement to the cloud. This paper examines market trends in edge computing and analyzes the impact of edge computing on major related industries.

  • Since the launch of WTO. the global telecommunications market has been accelerated to ensure interoperability between the various telecommunications or services and this effort is emerging as the realization of an importance of standardization. In addition, in recent years as standardization is recognized not as just a means of ensuring interoperability but as a key strategic means of economic survival in the new trade order at the international regional, and national levels. Thus, each country is working actively to process telecommunications standardization through such means as multilateral cooperation and collective counter-strategies, which are mapped out, in the various regional and global fora and consortia. In keeping with these trends, Asia-Pacific Telecommunity, which is taking charge of telecommunications affairs of Asia-Pacific region, has been pursuing not only regional common interests but enhancement of its status in the world market by standardization on the basis of intimate collaboration, obtained by establishing regional standardization organization named ASTAP(APT Standardization Program). Bearing in mind the consideration outlined above, this paper aims to analyze telecommunications standardization policy intended by Asia-Pacific regional standardization organization and accordingly, to suggest a strategy for strengthening telecommunications standardization activities in Asia-Pacific region.

  • Along with the advance of industrial technology in mobile telecommunications and diversity in customer needs, today's Korean mobile telecommunication market has rapidly expanded due to stronger competition among businesses as well as increasing the number of subscribers. 3G roll-outs of mobile telecommunications service, so called "HSDPA" has seriously promoted marketing strategies among mobile telecommunication companies which led to move to the next generation customers. Understanding the competitive situation, mobile telecommunications companies are currently focusing on increasing sales per subscriber as well as increasing the number of subscribers as a solution to occupy the leading position in the mobile telecommunications industry in the future. The purpose of this study was to classify the customers in mobile telecommunications service with or without higher tendency of intention to subscribe and use the service using discriminant analysis. Through the discriminant analysis, discriminant function which classifying the critical user has been identified. The result of this study will give useful marketing strategies in competitive HSDPA mobile telecommunications market.

  • This paper attempts to develop an index of mobile telecommunications service quality through econometric analysis using data of the leading telco in each OECD country. CapEx of the operator was selected as a proxy variable to represent the quality of the service. To eliminate the part which is dependent on the population and size from CapEx, however, CapEx was regressed on population, area, 3G coverage, Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) of mobile market, EBITDA margin, and market share of the leading operator. Then, the part of CapEx, which was explained by size and population, was subtracted from CapEx, and the remaining part was regarded as the quality index of mobile telecommunications service. Comparisons among quality indexes of each country revealed that the service quality in Korea and Japan is better than that of France, UK and Germany.
