A Study on Effect of Code Distribution and Data Replication for Multicore Computing Architectures

  • A multicore system must be able to take full advantage of the program's instruction and data parallelism. This study introduces the data replication technique as a support technique to maximize the program's instruction and data parallelism. Instruction level parallelism can be limited by data dependency. In this case, if data is replicated to each processor core and used, instruction level parallelism can be used to the maximum. The technique proposed in this study can maximize the performance improvement effect when applied to scientific applications such as matrix multiplication operation.

  • The flow ratio in the industrial process is usually accomplished by using PID controller with series type ratio. But always the large overshoot and a long rise time may be achieved from this conventional control. These problems are involved to the inexact flow ratio control. In order to avoid this poor performance. the paper presents a designing of the two controller modes for the flow ratio plants. This proposed controller combine the lookup table technique and the well-known PID controller to obtain the fast response and low overshoot of flow ratio control. The PID controller mode will be operated when the flow ratio reaches the preset value while the lookup table technique mode is applied for initial operation. The data in tile table is calculated by the valve sizing equation and convened to the valve position control signal. The experimental results show that the transient and steady state responses of the control systems using the proposed technique can be efficiently obtained when compared with tile conventional controller.

  • This study was carried out to utilize LSTM(Long Short-Term Memory) technique which is one kind of artificial neural network. Among the 27 types of motion data released by the UTD(University of Texas at Dallas), 3-axis acceleration and angular velocity data were applied to the basic LSTM and Deep Residual Bidir-LSTM techniques to classify the behavior.

  • As the refueling of a sodium-cooled fast reactor is conducted by rotating part of the reactor head without opening it, the monitoring of existing obstacles that can disturb the rotation of the reactor head is one of the most important issues. This paper deals with the ultrasonic ranging technique that directly monitors the existence of possible obstacles located in a lateral gap between the upper internal structure and the reactor core in a prototype generation IV sodium-cooled fast reactor (PGSFR). A 10 m long plate-type ultrasonic waveguide sensor, whose feasibility has been successfully demonstrated through preliminary tests, was employed for the ultrasonic ranging technique. The design of the sensor's wave radiating section was modified to improve the radiation performance, and the radiated field was investigated through beam profile measurements. A test facility simulating the lower part of the upper internal structure and the upper part of the reactor core with the same shapes and sizes as those in the PGSFR was newly constructed. Several under-water performance tests were then carried out at room temperature to investigate the applicability of the developed ranging technique using the plate-type ultrasonic waveguide sensor with the actual geometry of the PGSFR's internal structures.

  • Wind loads on low-rise buildings in general and residential homes in particular can differ significantly depending upon the laboratory in which they were measured. The differences are due in large part to inadequate simulations of the low-frequency content of atmospheric velocity fluctuations in the laboratory and to the small scale of the models used for the measurements. The imperfect spatial coherence of the low frequency velocity fluctuations results in reductions of the overall wind effects with respect to the case of perfectly coherent flows. For large buildings those reductions are significant. However, for buildings with sufficiently small dimensions (e.g., residential homes) the reductions are relatively small. A technique is proposed for simulating the effect of low-frequency flow fluctuations on such buildings more effectively from the point of view of testing accuracy and repeatability than is currently the case. Experimental results are presented that validate the proposed technique. The technique eliminates a major cause of discrepancies among measurements conducted in different laboratories. In addition, the technique allows the use of considerably larger model scales than are possible in conventional testing. This makes it possible to model architectural details, and improves Reynolds number similarity. The technique is applicable to wind tunnels and large scale open jet facilities, and can help to standardize flow simulations for testing residential homes as well as significantly improving testing accuracy and repeatability. The work reported in this paper is a first step in developing the proposed technique. Additional tests are planned to further refine the technique and test the range of its applicability.

Reconfigurable Selective Harmonic Elimination Technique for Wide Range Operations in Asymmetric Cascaded Multilevel Inverter

  • This paper presents a novel reconfigurable selective harmonic elimination technique to control harmonics over a wide range of Modulation Indexes (MI) in Multi-Level Inverter (MLI). In the proposed method, the region of the MI is divided into various sectors and expressions are formulated with different switching patterns for each of the sectors. A memetic BBO-MAS (Biogeography Based Optimization - Mesh Adaptive direct Search) optimization algorithm is proposed for solving the Selective Harmonic Elimination - Pulse Width Modulation (SHE-PWM) technique. An experimental prototype is developed using a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and their FFT spectrums are analyzed over a wide range of MI using a fluke power logger. Simulation and experimental results have validated the performance of the proposed optimization algorithms and the reconfigurable SHE-PWM technique. Further, the sensitivity of the harmonics has been analyzed considering non-integer variations in the magnitude of the input DC sources.

  • Depreciation accounting has as its main objective, the recovery of the original cost of plant investment less net salvage, over the estimated useful life of that plant. Accuracy of the whole life technique in meeting this objective depends entirely on the original estimates of service life and net salvages for an account. Where the whole life technique has been used and original estimates prove inaccurate, excessive or deficient accumulations in the depreciation reserve frequently occur. To overcome this, the remaining life technique is suggested to better match the challenges of accelerated technology and competition within the regulated environment. The flexibility of the remaining life technique will allow an even chance to provide a complete recovery of the original cost.

  • Since Dr. Lipke announces earned schedule management(ESM) in 2002, it has been used in project management to make up for the insufficient schedule management function of earned value management technique. However, it is difficult to accurately forecast the schedule of delayed defense research and development(R&D) projects with the ESM technique. Therefore, this paper proposes a new schedule forecasting method considering the progress of delayed work in ESM technique. This concept can also be adopted to the traditional project progress management (PPM) technique. We verify the effectiveness of the proposed concept through several defense R&D projects and prove that it is possible to supplement the schedule forecasting of the ESM and PPM technique.

  • A modified Time-Ratio Gray Scale AMOLED drive technique is described in which the frame period is split into two half-frames, each of which is divided into binary weighted sub-frames and driven in the conventional time-ratio manner. The proposed technique improves aperture ratio by reducing TFT sizes in pixel circuits.

  • Sphere anemometry technique is re-visited for low gas velocity measurements during full-scale fire tests. This technique has the advantage of requiring only one channel per sphere for data acquisition, in addition to being cheap and rugged, The results indicate that the technique is useful for small fuel load burns with low radiation levels. For large fuel loads, the usefulness is up to sprinkler activation temperatures.
