  • This study is a descriptive survey study to confirm the degree of depression, self-efficacy, life stress and smartphone addiction of nursing college students, and to identify their correlations and influencing factors. The study subjects had 15.85 points of depression, 3.19 points of self-efficacy, 2.47 points of life stress, and 39.23 points of smartphone addiction. As a result of analyzing smartphone addiction according to the general characteristics of the subjects, there was no statistically significant difference in grade and major, and there were significant differences in gender(t=-2.540, p=.014), grade(F=3.080, p=.029), smartphone importance(F=16.192, P<0.001), smartphone usage time (F=6.938, P<0.001). The subject's smartphone addiction showed a positive correlation with depression (r=.351, p<0.01), life stress (r=.321, p<.001), and self-efficacy (r=-.383, p<.001) showed a negative correlation. A negative correlation was found between depression and self-efficacy (r=-.529, p<.001), and a positive correlation was found between life stress (r=.568, p<.001). A negative correlation was found between self-efficacy and college life stress (r=-.434, p<.001). Self-efficacy appeared to be an influential factor in the subject's smartphone addiction. The goal is to provide basic data for programs and education to improve college students' self-efficacy.

  • This study examined the relationship among smartphone addiction, life stress, and family communication in nursing students. A total of 172 subjects participated in this study and the data were collected using the structured questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using an independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression using the SPSS WIN 19.0 program. Overall, the level of stress was high, time of family communication was short, and smartphone addiction rate was high in nursing students. The high risk group of smartphone addiction was 14.0%, potential risk group was 29.0%, and normal group was 57.0%. In the risk group, the life stress was higher (t=3.15, p=.002) and family communication was not better (t=-2.53, p=.012) than the normal group. Smartphone addiction correlated significantly with life stress (r=.27, p<.001) and family communication (r=-.26, p=.001). The factors affecting smartphone addiction were smartphone usage time, life stress, importance of smartphones in their lives, and family communication, and the explanatory power was 31.3%. Based on these results, it is necessary to develop personalized and collective customized intervention programs focused on smartphone using method, life stress management, and family communication for the prevention and management of smartphone addiction of nursing students.

  • This study aimed to identify binge-eating behavior and food addiction in Korean population and to determine their associations with obesity, eating behaviors, mental health and cognitive characteristics. We collected clinical questionnaire scores related to eating problems (e.g. binge eating, food addiction, food cravings), mental health (e.g. depression), and cognitive functions (e.g. impulsivity, emotion regulation) in 257 Korean adults in the normal and the obese weight ranges. Binge-eating and food addiction were most frequent in obese women (binge-eating: 46.6%, food addiction: 29.3%) when we divided the participants into 4 groups depending on gender and obesity status. The independence test using the data with propensity score matching confirmed that binge-eating and food addiction were more prevalent in obese individuals. Finally, we constructed the logistic regression models using forward selection method to evaluate the influence of various clinical questionnaire scores on binge-eating and food addiction respectively. Binge-eating was significantly associated with the clinical scales of eating disorders, food craving, state anxiety, and emotion regulation (cognitive reappraisal) as well as food addiction. Food addiction demonstrated the significant effect of food craving, binge-eating, the interaction of obesity and age, and years of education. In conclusion, we found that binge-eating and food addiction are much more frequent in females and obese individuals. Both binge-eating and food addiction commonly involved eating problems (e.g. food craving), but there was difference in mental health and cognitive risk factors. Therefore, it is required to distinguish food addiction from binge-eating and investigate intrinsic and environmental risk factors for each pathology.
