  • This paper presents a new method to study the impact factor of an old bridge based on the model updating technique. Using the genetic algorithm (GA) by minimizing an objective function of the residuals between the measured and predicted responses, the bridge and vehicle coupled vibration models were updated. Based on the displacement relationship and the interaction force relationship at the contact patches, the vehicle-bridge coupled system can be established by combining the equations of motion of both the bridge and vehicles. The simulated results show that the present method can simulate precisely the response of the tested bridge; compared with the other bridge codes, the impact factor specified by the bridge code of AASHTO (LRFD) is the most conservative one, and the value of Chinese highway bridge design code (CHBDC) is the lowest; for the large majority of old bridges whose road surface conditions have deteriorated, calculating the impact factor with the bridge codes cannot ensure the reliable results.

  • In this paper, a secure multilevel quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) scheme is proposed for the physical layer security (PLS) of the wireless communications. In the proposed scheme, each transmitted symbol's signal constellation (SC) is hopping with the control of two unique factors: amplitude distortion (AD) factor and phase hopping (PH) factor. With unknown the two factors, the eavesdropper cannot extract effective information from the received signal. We first introduce a security metric, referred to as secrecy gain, and drive a lower bound on the gain that the secrecy capacity can be improved. Then, we investigate the relationship among the secrecy gain, the signal to noise power ratios (SNRs) of the main and wiretap channels, and the secrecy capacity. Next, we analyze the security of the proposed scheme, and the results indicate that the secrecy capacity is improved by our scheme. Specifically, a positive secrecy capacity is always obtained, whether the quality of the main channel is better than that of the wiretap channel or not. Finally, the numerical results are provided to prove the analytical work, which further suggests the security of the proposed scheme.

  • This paper presents a direct single-stage power converter using single-phase isolated full-bridge converter modules, with inherent power factor correction (PFC) for a 12 kW switched mode power supply (SMPS). The advantages of the proposed converter are its simple control strategy, reduction in number of conversion stage, low input line current harmonics, and improvement in power factor. Analysis of the single-stage converter is carried out in continuous conduction mode of operation. Steady-state analysis of the proposed converter is conducted to obtain converter parameters. A systematic design procedure is also presented for a 12k W converter with a design example. The effect of load variation on SMPS is also studied in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed converter for the complete range of load conditions. A set of power quality indices on input ac mains for an SMPS fed from a single-stage converter is also presented for easy comparison of their performance.

  • Isosorbide dinitrate is an oral assiatant therapy agent of angina pectoris, myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure. The objective of this study was to formulate sustained release containing isosorbide dinitrate and assess their formulation variables. Pellets were prepared by fluid bed process and consist of drug layer and membrane layer. The pellets were coated with ethylcellulose along with $5{\sim}15%$ of plasticizer such as triacetin and diethyl butylrate. In vitro evaluation study was performed by comparative dissolution test between test and reference isosorbide dinitrate preparation. We could prepare sustained pellets of isosorbide dinitrate by fluid bed process which were reduced process time and had high content. The pellet coated with 1% ethylcellulose and triacetin(l5%) had a similar dissolution behavior compare to reference isosorbide dinitrate preparation controlling initial dissolution and those of dissolution at 30 min were 17.25 and 17.09%, respectively. Difference factor and similarity factor were $0{\sim}15$ and $50{\sim}100$ and there was no significant difference in bioequivalence between formulations. It might be concluded that our sustained release pellet of isosorbide dinitrate could be an alternatively delivery system to reference drug preparation.

  • This paper explored the development factors influencing the high growth of internet media industry recently in Korea. Both theoretical model and analytic model were formulated and tested by the results of questionnaire analysis. The factors extracted from five fields were as followings: policy, technology, market, firm, and profitability. Factor analysis was used to test the fitness of the given model, and the hypothesized model was found to be useful to explain the development factors of the internet media industry. The results showed that industry's development was explained by 41.3% for firm level, 37.6% for IT technology and policy, and 21.00/0 for market condition and competition.

  • In this study, a simple method for the determination of the shear correction factor for composites beam with a rectangular cross section is presented. The plane stress elasticity assumption is used after simplifications of the expression of the stress distribution in the beam. The different fiber orientation angle and volume fraction are considered in this work. The studied structure is subjected to various loading type (thermal and hygrothermal). The numerical results obtained show that there is a dependence of the shear coefficient on the orientation of the fibers. The evolution of the shear correction factors depends not only on the orientation of the fibers and also on the volume fraction and the environment. the advantage of this developed formula of the shear correction factor is to obtain more precise results and to consider several parameters influencing this factor which are neglected if the latter is constant.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of analytic rubrics on learners' self-directed learning ability in information technology unit assessment. The experiment and control groups were 4 classes of the 2nd grade in B middle school located in Daejeon. The pretest was performed to check the group homogeneity. For the experiment design, the nonequivalent control group design as a type of quasi-experimental design was used. The experiment was composed of 5 sessions. Statistical significance was p < .05 to verify the hypothesis, and SPSS 12.0 for Windows was used for statistical treatment. The results from this study were as follows: (1) The application of analytic rubrics in information technology unit assessment affected learners' self-directed learning ability in a positive way in 4 factor's(openness, self-concept, intrinsic motivation, self-evaluation) but does not affected in 3 factor's(autonomy, creativity, problem solving). (2) The difference in sex was not a statistically significant factor in the application of analytic rubrics in information technology unit assessment. Based on the results of the experiment, two suggestions were made to promote the application of rubrics in technology education assessment. (1) Research and development of many types of rubrics for technology education are needed. (2) Systematic training of rubrics for technology teachers is needed.

  • In this study, a diaphragm-type pressure sensor was developed using multi-layer(four-layer) graphene produced at 1 nm thickness by thermally transferring single-layer graphene produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to a 6" silicon wafer. By measuring the gauge factor, we investigated whether it was possible to produce a pressure sensor of consistent quality. As a result of the measurement, the pressure sensor using multilayer graphene showed linearity and had a gauge factor of about 17.5. The gauge factor of the multilayer graphene-based pressure sensor produced through this study is lower than that of doped silicon, but is more sensitive than a general metal sensor, showing that it can be sufficiently used as a commercialized sensor.

  • Angiogenesis is essential for tumor growth and vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF) plays a key role in this process. Conversely, sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) is a biologically active sphingolipid known to play a key role in cancer progression by regulating endothelial cell proliferation and migration. In this study, the authors found that S1P increases the level of VEGF mRNA in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and immortalized HUVECs (iHUVECs). Additionally, S1P was found to increase VEGF promoter activity in MS-1 mouse pancreatic islet endothelial cells. Furthermore, a pharmacological inhibitory study revealed that $G_{\alpha i/o}$-mediated phospholipase C, Akt, Erk, and p38 MAPK signaling are involved in this S1P-induced expression of VEGF. A component of AP1 transcription factor is important for S1P-induced VEGF expression. Taken together, these findings suggest that S1P enhances endothelial cell proliferation and migrat ion by upregulating the expression of VEGF mRNA.
