A Study on the relationship between dynamic capability & technology innovation performance

  • In this paper, we propose that investigating the relationship between the dynamic capacity and the technological innovation performance of firms. Based on the previous research, we divide the dynamic capacity into the adaptive capacity, absorption capacity, and productive capacity. Among the 3,400 companies responding to the technical statistics of SMEs in 2011, we performed multiple regression analysis with 2,807 except service industries. As a result, the absorptive capacity and productive capacity have a positive effect on the technological innovation performance at the 99% level, whereas the adaptive capacity has a negative effect on the technological innovation performance at the 95% level. The implications of this study are as follows. First, in order to improve the performance of technological innovation, it is important to strengthen the absorption capacity and productive capacity of companies. Absorption capacity shows that it is important to secure sufficient R & D manpower and R & D cost to utilize internal knowledge as well as to bring outside knowledge into the capacity to assimilate and utilize external knowledge. Second, the ability to commercialize a product is a capability to commercialize a technology that has succeeded in development, showing that the technology development organization must have the capability of post-development commercialization as well as technology development. Finally it shows the negative effect on adaptation capacity and innovation performance. Companies actively utilize external sources of information in order to respond to and adapt to the rapidly changing business environment. However, the results of this study show that a strategic approach is needed to use external sources of information and technology development resources. Especially as the use of external information resources and technology development resources increases.

구조방정식 모형을 활용한 기술혁신 장애요인에 따른 혁신원천 및 정부지원제도 활용과 혁신성과에 관한 연구 (An Empirical Study on the Use of Innovation Source and Government Support Programs in Technology Innovation Performance based on A Structural Equation Model(SEM))

  • 최근 기업의 경쟁력 확보와 생존에 있어 기술혁신의 중요성이 증대되고 있다. 반면 기업이 직면하는 기술혁신 장애요인도 다양해지고 있다. 여러 선행연구를 통해 기술혁신 장애요인을 해소하고 기술경쟁력을 확보하는데 다양한 내 외부 혁신원천과 정부지원제도의 활용이 중요한 요소로 평가받고 있다. 다만 단순한 인과모형에 기반해 변수간의 다양한 관계성을 고려하지 못했다는 비판이 있었다. 이 같은 선행연구의 지적에 바탕하여 본 연구에서는 혁신활동 수행에 있어 기업이 직면하는 기술혁신 장애요인을 OECD의 오슬로 매뉴얼(Oslo manual)과 다수 선행연구에 근거해 재무적 요인과 기술역량, 시장/제도관련 요인으로 구분하고, 이들 요인 간의 상호종속적 관계를 고려하여 혁신원천과 정부지원제도 활용 그리고 기술혁신성과에 미치는 영향을 구조방정식모형에 기반해 분석하였다. 실증분석에는 "2014 한국기업혁신조사: 제조업 부문"결과에서 결측치를 제외한 1,251개의 관측치를 활용하였다. 분석 결과, 자금, 역량, 시장 등 기술혁신 장애요인은 혁신원천과 정부지원제도 활용을 촉진하는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 기업이 활용한 다양한 혁신원천과 정부지원제도는 기술혁신성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 기술혁신 장애요인 중에서는 자금이 가장 부정적으로 기능하였다.

중소기업 경쟁력 향상을 위한 기술혁신 및 원가관리가 생산성에 미치는 영향 : 선박엔진 부품제조업체를 중심으로 (The Influences of Technological Innovation and Cost Management for Elevation of Small Enterprise Competitiveness on Productivity : Focused on Marine Engine Suppliers)

  • The purpose of this study is to figure out the impacts of technological innovation and cost management on productivity in small shipping industries to come up with developmental implications. To achieve this, a survey was carried out to 150 workers in small shipbuilding industries through April 2 to April 20, 2012. As for findings stated above, technological innovation and cost management in the Korean small shipbuilding industries were key factors that elevate financial and non-financial productivity. In the light of low technological prowess and cost structure of small shipbuilding industries, their productivity can be improved when intensive cost management with production factor technology as know-how is realized through quality management, which product development technology is the top priority as an independent niche strategy. Consequently, the combination of infrastructures in small shipbuilding industries with continuous efforts for cost reduction by the link to the systematized structure can't only secure their independent competitiveness, but raise their productivity.

기업사례를 통한 과학기술혁신정책의 평가 및 시사점: (주)바이로메드 (The Evaluation of the Korean Science, Technology, Innovation Policy: A Viewpoint of an Individual Firm, Viromed(Ltd))

  • The paper evaluates the Korean science, technology, and innovation policy(STIP) in terms of an individual firm. The firm is Viromed(Ltd), a new technology-based venture company in the field of biotechnology. The case is compared with the 'Hwang Project', which is known as a typical failure case in Korea. In order to evaluate the Korean STIP, we establish 6 areas, which are technological infrastructure, institutional infrastructure, human capital infrastructure, technology market, industrial base, and innovation networks. The study shows that the policy schemes relating with technological infrastructure, institutional infrastructure, human capital infrastructure, and industrial base play a positive role in the start-up, development and innovation of Viromed(Ltd). However, we can hardly find the role of Korean government in fostering the technology market, transferring the technological output to economic performance. Although the international networks with the British, American, and Japanese firms or investors were a key success factor of the growth of Viromed(Ltd), the role of the government in this policy area was not enough. As for the 'Hwang Project', we suggest that the government should consider the possibility of commercialization in choosing R&D projects and determining the size of financial aids. Since the evaluation of the Korean STIP is based on an individual firm, the results of the paper need to be confirmed by a systematic comparison with other cases or industries.

우리 나라 중소기업의 전략변화와 기술능력 학습 - 우리나라 전자부품 산업에 대한 사례연구 -

  • This study attempts to explore the evolution paths of Korean SMEs'strategies and their technological teaming processes. Several different evolution paths are identified based on a dynamic strategic group analysis of 115 SMEs'strategy in the Korean electronic component industry for the period of 1990-1995. Further, inadept case analyses on technological learning processes in 5 firms are undertaken. Major findings of this study can be summarized as follows : 1) There are three dominant evolution paths in SMEs'strategy. First path indicates the evolution from a subcontractor or petty imitator group(a strategic group with the narrow product/market domain and the low level of accumulated resource/capabilities) into an innovator group(a strategic group with the narrow domain but high level of technological capability) by accumulating technological capabilities. Second, some firms move from a subcontractor group into a generalizer group(a strategic group with broad product/market domain but relatively low level of technological capability) by simply adding product lines. Third path involves firms which evolve from a subcontractor group into a production focus group(a strategic group with high level of production capability) by investing in production capabilities. 2) An in-depth case analysis shows those who succeeded in technological learning are managed by CEOs, who have technological expertise and strategic vision, and have made an effort to establish management practices to support innovation, such employee educational program, performance-based reward system, etc. The successful firms also aggressively pursue diverse external linkages with outside technology sources to learn product and process technologies. Fiendly, this study discusses several implications of the findings for the theoretical development and strategic management of small firms in Korea.

소규모 기업의 R&D투자와 경영성과 간의 관계: 기술혁신과 마케팅역량의 역할 검증 (The relationship between R&D investment and management performance of small companies: Verification of the role of technological innovation and marketing capabilities)

  • 중소기업의 성장에 있어 R&D의 역할은 매우 크다. 본 연구는 중소기업의 경영성과에 있어서 R&D투자가 어떠한 영향을 미치는지, 이 관계를 기술혁신이 매개하는지, 마케팅 역량은 기술혁신과 경영성과의 관계를 조절하는지 검증하였다. 이를 위해 대구테크노파크가 2013년부터 매년 조사하는 기업패널조사의 자료를 사용하여 종단분석을 실시하였다. 주로 대구경북 지역에 있는 349개 기업의 데이터를 사용하였으며, 제조업의 종업원 30인에서 50인 규모가 주요한 분석대상 기업이었다. 먼저 R&D투자는 기술혁신뿐만 아니라 경영에 정적 영향을 미쳤으나, 기술혁신은 경영성과에 영향을 미치지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 또한 기술혁신은 R&D투자와 경영성과의 관계를 매개하지 않았다. 이는 소규모 중소기업의 경우, R&D투자로 기술혁신이 설사 일어난다고 하더라도, 그 기술혁신이 곧 경영성과로 이어지지 않는다는 것을 보여준다. 또한 기술혁신과 경영성과의 관계가 마케팅역량에 의해 달라지지 않았다. 이것은 소규모 중소기업에서의 기술혁신이 경영성과로 이어지기 쉽지 않다는 것을 보여주는 것이다.

An International Comparison of Technological Systems : The Case of CNC Machine Tools in Korea, Sweden, and U.S.A.

  • Focusing on a product, this paper reconstructs the concept of technological systems first introduced by Carlsson and Stankiewicz (1991). Based on the model and our earlier works, we compare the salient features of technological systems for computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools in Korea, Sweden, and the United States.. We also try to measure the performance of the systems in an international comparison. Major findings are as follows: (1) The length of 'learning period' for local (national) technological system is substantial, even though it is a catching-up case. (2) The key success factor of the technological system appears to be the connectivity among various actors or infrastructures, rather than just the existence or formation of those. (3) In three countries' experience, the government played an important role in the formation of each own technological system. (4) The performance of Korea's technological system for CNC machine tools during the past two decades(1981-97) seems to be better than that of Sweden and the U.S. Lastly, many policy implication are presented.

  • 본 연구는 급변하는 반도체 산업의 특성을 고려하여 고객가치 제고와 기술혁신 경쟁우위를 위해 R&D역량과 시장지향성이 제품혁신성과에 유의한 영향을 미치는지를 연구하였다. 즉, 연구모형에서와 같이 독립변수인 R&D역량, 시장지향성이 기술혁신지향성이라는 조절변수를 통해 종속변수인 제품혁신성과에 미치는 인과관계를 살펴보는데 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구를 위하여 반도체 기업의 개발업무 종사자를 대상으로 설문을 진행하였고 최종적으로 118부의 유효한 설문지를 회수하였다. 수집된 자료는 인구통계학적 특성을 통제변인으로 하는 다중회귀분석을 진행하였고 기술혁신지향성 조절효과는 위계적 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과 기업의 R&D역량 중 R&D집약도와 외부네트워크 역량이 높을수록 제품혁신성과가 높아지는 것으로 나타났고 시장지향성 중 고객지향성과 경쟁자지향성에 대하여 제품혁신성과가 높게 나타났다. 또한 R&D역량만이 기술혁신지향성의 조절효과가 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구결과는 반도체 기업의 제품혁신성과 창출을 위한 R&D역량과 시장지향성에 대한 이해를 높이고 기업의 제품혁신성과와 지속적인 경쟁우위를 확보하기 위해 기술혁신지향성이 중요한 조절 요소임을 실증적으로 지지하는 연구 자료가 될 것으로 기대한다.
