  • Internally plasticized PVC was prepared via chemical reaction of azide PVC and alkynyl group containing castor oil methyl ester. The chemical structure of alkynyl group containing castor oil methyl ester and internally plasticized PVC was characterized with FT-IR and $^1H$ NMR. Properties of internally plasticized PVC, including thermal stability, tensile tests and resistance to extraction in different solvents, was investigated. The results showed that alkynyl group containing castor oil methyl ester, as internal plasticizer of PVC, not only decreased the $T_g$ of PVC from $84.6^{\circ}C$ to $41.6^{\circ}C$ efficiently, but also presented no plasticizer loss in five different solvents. The tensile tests showed that elongation at break and tensile strength of internally plasticized PVC was 353.8% and 18.1 MPa. The internally plasticized PVC has potential application in replacing the traditional PVC material in PVC products with high durability.

  • Recently, the development of offshore wind farms based on past technical experiences from onshore wind turbine installations has become a worldwide issue. This study investigated the technical issues related to offshore wind farms and large-diameter monopiles from an economic perspective. In particular, the monopile foundation system (MFS), which is the most important part of the proposed fast construction system, is applied for the first time in Korea, and structural verification is essential because it supports large-diameter monopiles and is in charge of excavation. Therefore, in this study, a rapid construction system for large offshore wind power generators was introduced, and stability verification was performed through the structural analysis of the MFS.

  • Technical design codes of slope stability for port structures were studied by comparing local Korean code with international codes; Japanese, EC and China codes. Three international design codes are based on limit state design method. Although Chinese code was based on the modified Fellenius method in slope stability analyses, it is currently changing to the simplified Bishop method. In Eurocode, the Morgenstern & Price method or the Bishop method is recommended. In Japanese code, however, the modified Fellenius method is preferentially recommended, but the simplified Bishop method could be alternatively used in case of thick sandy ground conditions. As for design parameter determination, Eurocode has stipulated comprehensive partial factors and partial material factors, however Japanese code has clarified empirical partial material factors for each port structure. Chinese code, the minimum ranges of the comprehensive partial factors are stipulated, and the use of the strength index by specific tests is concretely clarified with the safety condition. Case study of slope stability analyses showed the safety factors were higher in order of Chinese, Japanese and Eurocode, respectively.

  • In recent years, river maintenance projects using natural methods have been continuously implemented in urban areas and methods emphasizing ecology are being developed and constructed in revetment areas. However, there is insufficient technical review on the hydraulic stability of those revetment methods during the event of flood. Therefore, a hydraulic analysis is necessary for the stream where revetments are applied. This study was conducted to develop an objective test method for the hydraulic stability of green revetment media. For this purpose, hydraulic model tests were performed for the green base materials for revetments. Tests were conducted using experimental devices for the hydraulic model which were installed to simulate the rapid current during the flood. Loss of soil by the hydraulic condition was compared and analyzed with that of dry green revetment media, and the evaluations were made on the corrosion resistance, tractive force, and contractile force. Test results showed that green revetment media had higher corrosion resistance in non-vegetation condition compared to dry green revetment media, and the loss of base materials by the rooting of vegetation showed significant reduction by the vegetation. In addition, results of the allowable tractive force of the base material indicated it is relatively stable in vegetation condition but scouring can occur in non-vegetation condition. Therefore, the development of vegetation in revetment areas is anticipated to be effective for the stability of revetment areas by reducing external forces interacting with the corrosion resistance and stream bank. The green revetment media in expected to contribute to the stability of revetment areas.

  • This study evaluated the importance of technical characteristics in manufacturing street furniture using 3D printing technology to suggest the direction of development of high priority 3D printing technology. The importance was analyzed by the QFD, quantified by scores and the priority of the items was summarized. As a result, the 'output size', 'shrinkage of material', and 'output angle' were derived as technical elements that should be prioritized in development and research. For verification, the design of atypical street furniture was made into a large 3D printed output and the development direction was suggested by applying the technical elements of priority during the manufacturing process. Street furniture should be designed based on functionality and stability, as well as economic efficiency, productivity, and aesthetics. Therefore, the 'output size' ensured stability by minimizing the division of parts, and the 'contractability of materials' satisfied the aesthetic and productivity by minimizing the error of form. Finally, the 'output angle' was verified by improving the quality of the output and selecting an angle with efficient and structural stability through various output angles.

  • The failure of cut slopes frequently occurs particularly during the thawing season and the rain season in summer. This study interpreted data collected from site to which a real-monitoring system was applied in order to analyze the causes of ground behaviors and to forecast future slope failure. As for research methods, this study analyzed the size and mechanism of failure by integrating the results of field surveys and measurements. Furthermore, it analyzed data transmitted by the monitoring system installed in the a result, three times of ground displacement occurred as well as a number of partial tension cracks. The cut slope composed of sandstone and siltstone started its initial behavior as a result of torrential downpour and the loss of support of the substructure. For quantitative analysis of the characteristics of ground behavior, this study measured 5 lateral lines. According to the result of the measurement, displacement happened little in the section to which countermeasure had been applied, but displacement of maximum 400mm happened in the section to which countermeasure had not bee applied. The analysis of data on displacement and rainfall suggested a close relationship between ground behavior and rainfall. According to the result of stability interpretation along with the change of ground saturation, stability rate appeared to be less than 1.0 when ground saturation is over 55%. Although the current trend of ground behavior is at a stable stage falling within the range of tolerance, it is considered necessary to continue monitoring and data analysis because ground displacement is highly possible with the change of temperature during the winter.

  • The present study deals with the nonlinear dynamics and stability of autonomous dissipative either imperfect potential (limit point) systems or perfect (bifurcational) non-potential ones. Through a fully nonlinear dynamic analysis, performed on two simple 2-DOF models corresponding to the classes of systems mentioned above, and with the aid of basic definitions of the theory of nonlinear dynamical systems, new important phenomena are revealed. For the first class of systems a third possibility of postbuckling dynamic response is offered, associated with a point attractor on the prebuckling primary path, while for the second one the new findings are chaos-like (most likely chaotic) motions, consecutive regions of point and periodic attractors, series of global bifurcations and point attractor response of always existing complementary equilibrium configurations, regardless of the value of the nonconservativeness parameter.

  • According to the 5th national plan for electric power demand and supply, the 3rd HVDC link will be installed between KEPCO and Jeju Island system and go into operation in June, 2016. However, if it adopt LCC HVDC, Jeju power system could be in voltage instable condition. In order to solve the problem, we propose the application of VSC HVDC to the 3rd HVDC project. In the past, VSC HVDC has many disadvantages such as, inefficiency in conversion, size limit, and expensiveness, compared to LCC HVDC. Recently, the new technologies and the demand for renewable energy interconnection are leading a large growth in VSC HVDC market. In this paper, we will introduce the technical and market trends of VSC HVDC and power system stability analysis results for Jeju power system having LCC and VSC HVDCs.
