The study was conducted to compare the components such as proximate composition, total dietary fiber(TDF) content, acid detergent fiber(ADF) content, lignin, water binding capacity(WBC), amino acid composition and lipid components from brown Job's tears, dehulled Job's tears, brown Yeomjoo and bran of Job's tears. The results from this study are summerized as follows: Total dietary fiber(TDF) content of Job's tears, brown Job's tears, brown Yeomjoo and bran of Job's tears were 2.70%, 3.86%, 4.33% and 13.3% each. Water-binding capacity(WBC) of TDF and ADF were $2.63{\pm}0.02g\;H_2O/g$ TDF and $5.89{\pm}0.15g\;H_2O/g$ ADF each. In amono acids composition of samples, glutamic acid content was the highest and the next was leucine. Chemical score of leucine in dehulled Job's tears was very high(189), in contrast lysine was very low$(22{\sim}23)$ So lysine was a first limitting amino acid in Job's tears and Yeomjoo. Neutral lipid contents were 90.89%-96.55%, glycolipid contents were 2.35%-7.48% and phospholipid contents were very low. The major fatty acids of lipid fractions were palmitic acid. oleic acid and linoleic acid.

Background: To determine the natural progression of conservatively treated rotator cuff tears, we evaluated changes in radiologic and clinical parameters in patients whose recalcitrant tears were neglected after conservative treatment. Methods: A total of 73 patients with recalcitrant rotator cuff tears in spite of conservative treatment were included in this study. We measured changes in tear size and in the extent of fatty infiltration of the rotator cuff by comparing the initial and final follow-up magnetic resonance imagings (MRIs). To determine factors influencing the change in tear size, we collected the medical history of patients taken at the time of initial admission. Results: The average follow-up period was 20.1 months, and the average increase in tear size across this period was 6.2 mm. In terms of steroid injection, we found that the increases in tear size of the steroid injection group (p=0.049) and of the sub-group that had received more than three steroid injections (p=0.010) were significantly greater than that of the non-steroid injection group. Conclusions: We found that the increase in cuff tear size was on average 6.2 mm across the follow-up period, indicating that neglecting cuff tears may cause them to progress into more severe tears. We also observed that a history of steroid injection might be a possible risk factor for a worse prognosis of cuff tears. Therefore, we suggest that patients with rotator cuff tears and a history of steroid injection are recommended aggressive modes of treatment such as surgery.
Field experiment was carried out to obtain the basic information on the soil improvement with different improved methods on job's tears yield and soil properties in the newly-reclaimed land from 1985 to 1988. Job's tears yield, soil properties and annual changes of soil were investigated and analyzed. Soil bulk density and hardness of topsoil decreased from 1st year to 3rd year, but those increased in 4th year. Soil pH of topsoil had no differences in different soil depths and cultivated years. Average yield of job's tears in the integrated improvement plot was 2.16ton/ha. That was increased by 49% than the control plot. Crop yield was greatest in order of integrated improvement>subsoiling>phosphate>lime>compost>control plot. Correlation coefficients of job's tears yield with soil pH and organic matter content were higher significantly. Also those of subsoil were higher than topsoil. Ratios of annual changes of soil bulk density and hardness showed significant highly with job's tears yield. Also that soil pH was significant at 5 % level in the topsoil.
Job's-tears(Coix lachryma-jobi L. var. Ma-yuen Stapf) seeds were processed to flakes by soaking, heat treatment, intermediate-moisture drying, flaking, drying, and cooking. Some functional properties of job's-tears flakes subjected to varing degree of heating were characterized by specific volume, texture, water absorption index(WAI), water solubility index(WSI), and viscosity. As degree of gelitinization increased within the intermediate range of $60{\sim}70%$, steam-cooked Job's-tears demonstrated appropriate rheological properties for further processes, resulting in increased specific volume and decreased breaking strength. However, excessive heat treatment rendered Job's-tears undesirably sticky for flaking, which caused adverse effects on the functional properties of flakes such as specific volume and breaking strength. Increasing steaming time$(5{\sim}30\;min)$ caused an increase in WAI and WSI values. Apparent viscosity of powdered flakes was increased with the extent of gelitinization as a function of heat processing. Viscosity of powdered flakes determined using the amylograph increased with the degree of heating applied to Job's-tears at low pasting temperatures, accompanied by a decrease in maximum viscosity as the pasting temperature increased.
The effects of particle sizes (small, medium and large sizes) and gelatinization treatment on the changes of the instant properties of Job's tears powder were investigated. The degree of gelatinization on the different particle size samples of Job's tears powder was the highest in the small particle size, and it also showed an increasing trend regardless of pregelatinizing whether it is or not as the particle size decreased from large particle size to small particle size. The water solubility index of the pregelatinized samples was high compared to that of ungelatinized samples regardless of particle size and temperatures. The water absorption and swelling power increased as particle size and temperature were increased. The dispersibility and sinkability of ungelatinized sample was increased as particle size and temperature were increased and it also showed lower value regardless of particle size and temperature. However, the dispersibility and sinkability of pregelatinized samples were shown to have the opposite result, such that the smallest particle size of pregelatinized sample had the lowest sinkability (11.3%). The turbidity of the pregelatinized small particle size was the highest by a factor of 1.08.
Purpose: To demonstrate arthroscopically the presence of bilateral shoulder "mirror lesions" due to overhead work. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in a historical cohort of 10 male tire plant workers who underwent MRI studies of both shoulders. Bilateral intraarticular shoulder pathology was diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging and confirmed by arthroscopy. "Mirror lesions" were defined as similar pathology between an individual patient's two shoulders. Results: We report on ten patients who had bilateral "mirror lesions." The most common mirror lesions were tears of the rotator cuff. Most patients (7 of 10) had more than one mirror lesion in their shoulders. There were two bilateral full thickness tears involving the supraspinatus and infraspinatus, four bilateral partial thickness supraspinatus tears, six bilateral partial or upper corner lesion complete subscapularis tears, and one bilateral complete supraspinatus tear. Conclusion: Occupational overhead work with simultaneous use of both arms is associated with bilateral shoulder lesions verified by arthroscopy. By demonstrating the work-related bilateral shoulder involvement, this study suggests an etiopathogenesis for these lesions and provides rational for developing worksite prevention strategies.
Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the results of arthroscopic bridging repair using a human dermis allograft in the treatment of massive irreparable rotator cuff tears. Methods: From November 2009 to April 2011, 12 patients underwent arthroscopic bridging repair using a human dermis allograft in the treatment of massive irreparable rotator cuff tears. Patients were followed for an average of 33.9 months. Clinical outcome was evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively using the mean University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) score and the Korean Shoulder Scoring System (KSS). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed postoperatively at an average of 6.5 months. Results: At a mean follow-up of 33.9 months (range, 25 to 42 months), 11 out of 12 patients were satisfied with their procedure. Patients showed significant improvement in their mean modified UCLA score from 15.9 preoperatively to 29.4 postoperatively (p=0.001). The mean KSS score improved from 45.6 preoperatively to 80.5 postoperatively (p=0.002). In MRI studies, 9 out of 12 patients had full incorporation of the graft into the native rotator cuff remnant. To date, there has been no intraoperative or postoperative complication from the graft procedure, such as infection or allograft rejection, in any patient. Conclusions: Arthroscopic bridging repair using a human dermis allograft can be considered as an option in treatment of select cases of massive irreparable rotator cuff tears, resulting in high patient satisfaction.

Physicochemical properties of native and acid-modified Job's tears (Coix lachryma-jobi L.) starches were investigated. Starch extracted from Job's tears was treated with 2.2 N hydrochloric acid for different length of time (3, 6, 12, and 18 hr). The hydrolysis pattern of starches with the acid proceeded rapidly up to 12 hr and then the approached constant values. The swelling power of acid-modified starches measured at all temperatures was lower than that of its native counterparts and the water solubility index increased as temperature and hydrolysis time increased. Rapid visco analyzer viscograms of acid-modified starches demonstrated a very low viscosity as compared with that of native starch. However, Xray diffraction did not show any significant alteration in the crystallinity after acid-modification.

For the development of a new antidementia functional food or alternative drug using agricultural products, Job's tears (Coix lachrymajobi L.), which shows high acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity (55.1%) was selected and the extraction conditions of AChE inhibitor were optimized. AChE inhibitor of Job's tears was maximally extracted when it was treated with 60% methanol at $40^{\circ}C$ for 6 h. The AChE inhibitor of the methanol extracts was partially purified by systematic solvent extraction, thin layer chromatography, silica gel chromatography and reverse-phase HPLC and the partial purified AChE inhibitor with inhibitory activity ($IC_{50}$) of $0.608\;{\mu}g$ was obtained. The partial purified AChE inhibitor was soluble in methanol and hexane, and insoluble in water. Its maximum absorption spectra was 230 nm and also it was stable in the range of $30^{\circ}C$ and $70^{\circ}C$ and pH 4.0-8.0 for 1 h.
Flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tears in adolescents appear as avulsion tears in the FDP tendon, whereas longitudinal tears are very rare. Moreover, there has been only one reported case of intratendinous fibroma occurring in the flexor tendon of a finger. A longitudinal tear of the flexor profundus tendon associated with an intratendinous fibroma has not been previously reported. We report one case of a longitudinal partial tear accompanied by an intratendinous fibroma at the FDP tendon of the left middle finger after a hyperextension injury caused by the impact of a baseball. Given the rarity of longitudinal flexor tendon tears in adolescents, in such cases, the possibility of an underlying pathology should be considered.
