  • This study is an analysis of the process of the discovery of the DNA double helix structure from an engineering literacy education perspective. The explanation of the DNA double helix structure by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1952 is a well-known scientific episode. The process is also a combination of various incidents that can frequently happen in competitive engineering research and development situations. Therefore, the process of the discovery of the DNA structure is a remarkable event that can cover all subjects, such as engineering and ethics, research ethics, communication between researchers, engineering and leadership, engineering and teamwork, and engineering and women. This paper focuses on analyzing the research ethics issues associated with Rosalind Franklin and comparing and analyzing the three teams that were very close to the discovery of the DNA structure. By looking at why the Watson and Crick team got the final answer instead of the Linus Pauling's team or the Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin's team, the virtues of the technology development process that should be taught in engineering literacy education will be naturally presented.

  • Due to their natural and social revelation, also their ease and flexibility, human collective behavior and teamwork sports are inspired to introduce optimization algorithms to solve various engineering and scientific problems. Nowadays, meta-heuristic algorithms are becoming some striking methods for solving complex real-world problems. In that respect in the present study, the authors propose a novel meta-innovative algorithm based on soccer teamwork sport, suitable for optimization problems. The method may be referred to as the Soccer League Optimization-based Championship Algorithm, inspired by the Soccer league. This method consists of two main steps, including: 1. Qualifying competitions and 2. Main competitions. To evaluate the robustness of the proposed method, six different benchmark mathematical functions, and two engineering design problem was performed for optimization to assess its efficiency in achieving optimal solutions to various problems. The results show that the proposed algorithm may well explore better performance than some well-known algorithms in various aspects such as consistency through runs and a fast and steep convergence in all problems towards the global optimal fitness value.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine difference in quality of chest compression according to encouragement method of focusing on two rescuers' teamwork in CPR guideline for 2010. Subjects were randomly extracted the Dept. Emergency Medical Technology students who completed the curriculum of CPR. A group was divided into the group with one-time encouragement(33 people) and the group with continuous encouragement(33 people). Measurement period was progressed from April 30, 2012 to May 7. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS WIN program(version 12.0). As a result of research, the accuracy of chest compression(time, %) was higher(p<.05) in the group with one-time encouragement(118.72 times, 78.54%) than the group with continuous encouragement(95.12 times, 62.96%). As for the recognition of subjective concentration, the recognition as saying of being helpful for concentration was higher(p<.05) in the group with one-time encouragement(3.90 points) than the group with continuous encouragement(3.12 points). Even as for the recognition of subjective fatigue relief, the recognition as saying of being helpful for fatigue relief was higher(p<.05) in the group with one-time encouragement(3.96 points) than the group with continuous encouragement(3.30 points).

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of Engineering computer programming instruction using project learning, to find out the ways to solve some revealed problems, and to improve the instruction. Unlike traditional lecture courses, students are encouraged to cultivate problem solving and teamwork skills through the programming project. In order to examine the effect of project learning, a survey was conducted with 49 students. The questionnaire consisted of 20 items with 5-grade scale each, the contents of which included learning value, workload, skills acquirement, assignment and comment. The SPSS, statistical analysis software was used to get statistics such as ANOVA, correlation and mean, etc. The results of this study showed (1) project learning was more efficient to acquire problem solving and teamwork skills compared with lecture learning, (2) there was significant correlation between self directed learning skill and information collecting skill, (3) cyber education system(i-campus) was helpful for students' self learning. But the results also showed that (4) students did not give high scores on items of the workload or difficulty of assignments. So we can conclude that it is necessary to develop the suitable projects for the capability of students to make the better project learning.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic catalyzed major changes in our work environment, underscoring the critical role of workplace flexibility. While a wealth of research exists on specific flexible work strategies and schedules, a broader understanding of workplace flexibility has been somewhat overlooked. This study aimed to bridge this gap by examining the correlation between workplace flexibility and organizational commitment. Our sample consisted of 300 employees from foreign businesses in the ICT(information and communications technology) service sector and the manufacturing industry, along with those from the top 50 leading Korean enterprises. We bifurcated workplace flexibility into two distinct categories for this study: quantitative and qualitative. Our results revealed that within the quantitative category, the flexibility of continuity of work and flexible place significantly enhanced organizational commitment. Interestingly, the flexibility of work schedules didn't have a marked impact on commitment levels. On the qualitative side, job autonomy and teamwork emerged as significant drivers of organizational commitment. It's worth noting that qualitative aspects of workplace flexibility had a more pronounced effect on organizational commitment than the quantitative elements. These findings highlight the necessity of approaching workplace flexibility from a comprehensive perspective, embracing both its quantitative and qualitative dimensions. For businesses aiming to maximize the benefits of flexibility, it's essential to cultivate a culture of open communication, champion collaboration, and prioritize job autonomy and teamwork. Establishing a work environment that actively supports feedback-oriented communication stands as a key component in this endeavor.

  • Team collaboration is becoming commonplace and it is spotlighted in agile software development projects as well. More efficient teamwork in terms of effective team operation and project performance is very important. Heuristic software development staffing method has been used, but algorithm approach is needed to compensate for it. In this paper, we propose a mathematical approaches for staffing developers in teamwork-based software development projects. This consist of six process, and activities in each processor is defined as a mathematical function placement, and functional deployment matrix is used. A case study is presented in order to prove the usefulness of this approach. This paper is a significant research because a mathematical approach of work assignment is developed for human resources by quantitative logic and it deviate from intuitive or heuristic methods used previously.

  • Well organized design based education is the one of the best way to develop the abilities needed for the engineer such as the recognizing and formulating a problem and then solving it creatively and systematically. In order for this, we prepared a course named 'Introduction to the Engineering Design' for the first-year students, which aims at developing creativity and ability to promote a project. Experiment-design mixed courses and theory-design mixed courses, where students have to solve various design problems, are provided for the higher grade students. In this paper, we are focused on the experiment-design mixed course for the second-year students which has been operating from two years ago. Here we show how the teamwork ability is improved. We also present how to operate the course in detail so that anyone can easily get the way to reach the outcomes needed for the engineers.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills and teamwork of nurses in simulated cardiac arrests in the hospital. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted with 35 teams of 3 to 4 registered nurses each in a university hospital located in Seoul. A mannequin simulator was used to enact simulated cardiac arrest. Assessment included critical actions, time elapsed to initiation of critical actions, quality of cardiac compression, and teamwork which comprised leadership behavior and communication among team members. Results: Among the 35 teams, 54% recognized apnea, 43% determined pulselessness. Eighty percent of the teams compressed at an average elapsed time of $108{\pm}75$ seconds with 35%, 36%, and 67% mean rates of correct compression depth, rate, and placement, respectively. Thirty-seven percent of the teams defibrillated at $224{\pm}67$ seconds. Leadership behavior and communication among team members were absent in 63% and 69% of the teams, respectively. Conclusion: The skills of the nurses in this study cannot be considered adequate in terms of appropriate and timely actions required for resuscitation. Future resuscitation education should focus on improving the quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation including team performance targeting the first responders of cardiac arrest.
