  • This study was conducted to identify changes of insect compositions and diversity after construction of an onshore wind farm. We investigated insect fauna and compositions between a grassland deforested by the construction and a forest located at Yeongdeok and Yeongyang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea. Insects were collected using a sweeping net and light trap. A total of 11 orders, 50 families, and 246 species, and 1,076 individuals were collected at study sites. By taxonomic group, Lepidoptera species were the most frequently found with 141 species, 417 individuals (38.8%), followed by Hymenoptera (20.6%), Hemiptera (16.2%), and Orthoptera (12.3%). There were also significant differences in insect species and community compositions between sites. Creating open-field deforested forests are beneficial for some insect groups such as Hymenoptera and Orthoptera. Our results suggest that deforesting by the construction of an onshore wind farm might affect the composition and diversity of insects. Results of this study provide basic data for research on onshore wind farms.

  • The investigation for the species composition and catch in the deep East Sea was carried out with commercial trawlers from 2004 to 2006. The catches were 6,043kg and were composed of 43 species with 34 hauls between 250m and 1,030m in depth. The principal species caught were Allolepis hollandi, red crab (Chionoecetes japonicus), Careproctus rastrinus, Argis lar, Chionoecetes opilio, Malacocottus gibber, Petroschmidtia toyamensis, Pandalus eous Makarov, and Dasycottus setiger. The rate of discarded catches in situ was about 50%. The diversity indexes of 2005 and 2006 were 1.152 and 0.878, respectively, and the evenness indexes at those years were 0.752 and 0.583, respectively, which implied one dominant species caught in 2006.

  • A total of 509 rice panicle samples were collected at harvest time from fields in 8 provinces from 2010 to 2014. One hundred five grains per sample were plated on potato dextrose agar and 6,658 Fusarium isolates were obtained; among them, 67 were identified as Fusarium armeniacum by sequencing the translation elongation factor $1{\alpha}$ ($EF-1{\alpha}$) and confirmed by their morphological and cultural characteristics. Considerable variation in conidial size, colony color and $EF-1{\alpha}$ sequences was observed among the fungal isolates. The ability of 24 F. armeniacum isolates to produce T-2 and HT-2 toxin in potato sucrose agar was determined using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Twenty one isolates produced T-2 and HT-2 toxin, resulting in varying toxin levels among the isolates. The results show that Korean isolates of F. armeniacum have diversity with respect to morphological, cultural, genetic, and toxigenic properties.

  • The soil chemical properties, microbial community structures and biochemical properties of lettuce or cucumber-cultivated greenhouse soil samples were analyzed to assess soil health and characterize microbial distribution in 8 locations in Korea. Although most of chemical properties were within the soil management guidelines, the available phosphate, and the contents of exchangeable potassium and calcium were higher than those of recommended levels. In the culture-dependent analysis, 841 bacterial strains were isolated from the greenhouse soils and were identified at the genus level by 16S rRNA gene sequences analysis. The dominant bacterial genera were Bacillus (35.7%), Microbacterium (9.3%), Arthrobacter (5.7%) and Lysobacter (5.1%). The abundance of pseudomonads was highly variable depending on the soil samples. In the culture-independent analysis, soil microbial community was investigated by using phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) method. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that a specific grouping for microbial community structure in the greenhouse soils was not observed based on cultivated crops and investigated sites. The results revealed that the greenhouses soils examined are relatively sound managed in terms of soil chemical contents and microbial properties.

  • Since 'virtual teams' are not bounded by geographical dimensions, culture becomes an important determinant of their success. Though cultural diversity provides unique opportunities to build up new ideas, it can also create problems in the midst of individual interactions and eventually result in poor performance. With little research on this topic, this study examines the relationship between culture and virtual teams' performance. An experiment was conducted followed by the survey based on subjects' perceptions on the experiment. The results show that cultural diversity has significant impact on virtual teams' performance through confusion and conflict in virtual teams. This study empirically proves the fact that conflict is one of the most critical antecedents of a virtual team's performance with high R-square values in both experimental and control groups. In addition, this research introduces and empirically tests a new construct, 'confusion' which turns out to be also important in the virtual team's performance research, and the relationships among confusion, conflict and the virtual team's performance. Next, the findings confirm the importance of studying virtual teams' performance research from the cultural perspective.

  • Background: Many insectivorous bats have flexible diets, and the difference in prey item consumption among species is one of the key mechanisms that allows for the avoidance of interspecies competition and promotes coexistence within a microhabitat. In Korea, of the 24 bat species that are known to be distributed, eight insectivorous bats use forest areas as both roosting and foraging sites. Here, we aimed to understand the resource partitioning and coexistence strategies between two bat species, Myotis ikonnikovi and Plecotus ognevi, cohabiting the Mt. Jumbong forests, by comparing the differences in dietary consumption based on habitat utilization. Results: Upon examining their dietary composition using the DNA meta-barcoding approach, we identified 403 prey items (amplicon sequence variants). A greater prey diversity including Lepidoptera, Diptera, Coleoptera, and Ephemeroptera, was detected from M. ikonnikovi, whereas most prey items identified from P. ognevi belonged to Lepidoptera. The diversity index of prey items was higher for M. ikonnikovi (H': 5.67, D: 0.995) than that for P. ognevi (H': 4.31, D: 0.985). Pianka's index value was 0.207, indicating little overlap in the dietary composition of these bat species. Our results suggest that M. ikonnikovi has a wider diet composition than P. ognevi. Conclusions: Based on the dietary analysis results, our results suggests the possibility of differences in foraging site preferences or microhabitat utilization between two bat species cohabiting the Mt. Jumbong. In addition, these differences may represent one of the important mechanism in reducing interspecific competition and enabling coexistence between the two bat species. We expected that our results will be valuable for understanding resource partitioning and the coexistence of bats inhabiting the Korean forests.

  • As the computer graphic technology has developed rapidly, the management of visual effects production has also changed. However, the insufficient rest and the inefficiency of communication have resulted in more pressure which would weaken the strength of the whole team. For searching the possible solution, this research has applied the SCRUM in VFX production and analyzed the impact of SCRUM for VFX project management. SCRUM was first used in the projects of software development, but now there are already many successful examples of introducing SCRUM into their facilities in various fields. This paper has used SCRUM in the experimental group and present methodology in VFX project management in the control group for the same project. Based on the analysis of the questionnaire investigation from both group with using t-test for data analysis, it has confirmed the credibility of the questions in the questionnaire index as α > 0.72. With the result of analysis based on the corresponding samples of the t-test, it shows the diversity of SCRUM for project management, and the convenience of communication within the team can enhance the team strength. Follow-up research will attend to provide more suggestions for applying SCRUM in other areas in project management.

  • The focus of this study is to analyze between South Korea and China in terms of diversity in Management Information Systems research. As a result, there is herding phenomenon regarding researches in both of the countries compared to other previous studies. There also seemed to be lack of in-depth study of basic theories and connection to related field of study considering the broad topics of management information, unlike other international journals that pursue diversity in control referencing various methodologies, analysis units and many citations. Therefore, both South Korea and China should stabilize theoretical base of MIS through securing independent field of MIS along with founding the fundamentals by searching in diversified fields, methodologies and analysis units with focused topics. The upshot here is that with respect to diversity in MIS from both countries, to alleviate herding phenomenon, enforcing accuracy of data collection and reducing convenience pursuit should be implemented. Also as criteria to select a topic, different kinds of consulting concepts and taking social issues into consideration that helps tool development and analysis power should be done. Through varied methodologies, tool development and analysis power should be assisted and analysis unit should be shifted to organization unit for Korea and team or individual for China only to augment the accessibility. As a limitation for the paper is that the data used in this analysis is secondary data. In addition, although time period used in both countries were the same, object of analysis had homogeneity in Korean case while Chinese one having heterogeneity from 19 different journals. For the future studies, multicultural comparison or time series analysis and their comparison in deeper approach with regard to object of analysis and methodologies can contribute to further MIS diversity.

  • In Korean waters, there are two color types (blue and purple) of the blue crab Portunus trituberculatus. The blue type is common, but the ratio of the purple type has increased in landings. To determine whether there were significant morphometric or genetic differences between the blue and purple types, crabs caught from the West Sea of Korea were examined. Based on covariance analysis, there were significant differences in 1 of 10 morphometric characteristics of males between the two types, in none of the ten characteristics for females. Using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) DNA fingerprinting, no specific AFLP marker was detected for each type. The heterozygosity and genetic diversity were very low. Analyses of pairwise distance, the Fst index, and genetic similarity revealed similar results, with very low genetic differentiation. Therefore, there is no significant difference between blue and purple types of the crab from the West Sea of Korea, and the two types in the West Sea can be managed as one stock.
