  • Structural sizing is a rewarding task due to its non-convex constrained nature in the design space. In order to provide both global exploration and proper search refinement, a hybrid method is developed here based on outstanding features of Evolutionary Computing and Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization. The new method introduces an observer phase for memory exploitation in addition to vector-sum movements in the original teacher and learner phases. Proper integer coding is suited and applied for structural size optimization together with a fly-to-boundary technique and an elitism strategy. Performance of the proposed method is further evaluated treating a number of truss examples compared with teaching-learning-based optimization. The results show enhanced capability of the method in efficient and stable convergence toward the optimum and effective capturing of high quality solutions in discrete structural sizing problems.

  • This study tried to develop and implement a class model that can apply the teaching method that can operate learner-centered classes in university education to the class operation of the entire university, not individuals. For the development of the instructional model, the final model was derived through analysis of prior research, expert review, derivation of instructional model and design principles, pilot operation, primary questionnaire analysis, model and design strategy revision, and secondary questionnaire analysis. Shift_N+1 class consists of 6 models, and each model was divided into 3 parts. It was a preliminary learning using video, a face-to-face class for question-and-answer and in-depth learning on the core content, and feedback and process evaluation for individual student. We have built our own computer system so that we can implement this every week. The teaching method model that can apply the learner-centered curriculum to all classes at the university was standardized. The Shift_N+1 teaching method seeks to maximize the learner-centered learning effect by reflecting the characteristics of the subject, and to improve the quality of education by identifying students' achievements by week.

  • This study is intended to analyze flipped classroom learning activities, which have recently been spotlighted as a learner-centered teaching method in universities, from the perspective of cultural and historical activity theory. A survey and some participation observations were conducted with one professor and the students who participated in Educational Methods and Technology courses at A university. The components of the flipped classroom learning activities were analyzed based on the model of the activity system, and contradictions that appeared in the interactions between components were analyzed. Four implications were proposed for a more advanced flipped classroom learning activity system: the professor's and the learners' true identity recognition and role performance, strengthening the organic link between online and offline activities, support for alleviating the burden of teaching and learning preparation, and readjusting the system to support its smooth operation.

Korean Government gives an efforts to set up the u-School as the educational environment supported by ICT. This study aims to find efficient uses of ICT to cope with the changing education environment and emerging needs of users. The survey research follows the pilot study on the model of future school. The students and teachers in six schools located in Busan answered the questionnaire and 752 individuals were analyzed by the statistical method including frequencies, crosstabs, ANOVA, and factor analysis. The conclusions are as follows: (1) Highly demanded were the u-School facilities to provide pleasant environment as the teachers and students have to spend most of time in classroom, or school premises. In addition, the infrastructures were so desperately required that students are able to control their textbooks and belongings, and efficiently utilize a variety of data. (2) The classroom volume should be planned a bit smaller than the current number of students so that teachers are relieved from the burden of too many student. The needs of students to interact with more students can be bolstered by utilization of ICT. (3) The respondents feel the high needs of computer for student, electronic blackboard, electronic lecture desk, microphone and computer for teacher as the teaching and learning facilities. This showed high needs for teaching and learning facilities enabling the active and individual learning through the use of ICT at education environment. In conclusion, the study proposes the fundamental data to combine u-School elements proper to the current learning and school environment, from the analysis on the use of school facilities, with the subjects, the users of education environment.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the medical education system of Korea and to propose a method of curriculum redesign. Although there have been many attempts by medical educators to improve the quality of medical education, the results have not been fruitful. First, there exists a limitation to the dualistic curriculum design based on Flexnerianism, and thus, this model does not provide an integrated experience to medical students. Therefore, we propose a unidimensional model for curriculum redesign. Second, it is impossible to promote excellence in medical education without solving the structural problems of teaching and learning, such as the teaching competency of the faculty, large-scale lectures, and team teaching systems. A curricular strategy that emphasizes mutual interaction and teaching accountability is necessary to promote meaningful learning. Third, the current clinical training system, the circulation model, provides incomplete training as well as a lack of sequence and articulation experiences. This system needs to be redesigned in a way that allows only those students who have mastered both the knowledge and the application of medical education to advance to the next step. Fourth, norm-referenced assessments of a medical college distort the learning process and create unconstructive system energy. A criterion-referenced assessment that values cooperation, independent study, and intrinsic motivation is more important for the reliability and validity of the assessment. Medical students should not focus on formative and informative learning. Medical colleges should investigate the multifaceted potential of the students and provide transformative learning to grow students into change agents. For this to take place, curriculum redesign-not new methods of medical education-is required.
