  • This study aimed to analyze the appropriateness of chemistry teaching-learning programs for the gifted in science in middle school gifted classes and to propose improvements. For this study, 5 chemistry teaching-learning 4-6 hour programs developed for science gifted classes by Korea Education Development Institute (KEDI) and 3 chemistry teaching-learning programs developed for science gifted classes by three middle schools in K province were selected. A standard model for gifted education programs was used as tool for analyzing the program targets, program contents, teaching-learning methods, and assessment items. The results showed that all chemistry teaching-learning programs for the gifted in science presented well attainable objectives in the program targets. However, most program targets did not offer differentiated objectives from the general education. Program contents of KEDI stresses intensified education, and also presented a high ratio of sub-elements of creativity, which can enhance gifted creativity. On the other hand, program contents developed by three middle schools focused on acceleration in advancement, and presented low ratio of creativity sub-elements, which could be insufficient in enhancing gifted creativity. Differentiated and personalized, integrated science and interscience, updated research contents were hardly found in programs developed by KEDI and three middle schools. However, teaching-learning methods were composed to fit the learning objectives in the teaching process and the procedures, and were made to self-directed learning. There were no assessment for the feedback after class. Therefore, teaching-learning programs for the gifted in science should be developed further in order to fulfill the objectives of gifted education and gifted characteristics. Also, it is necessary to construct infrastructure to carry out the developed teaching-learning programs.

  • In this study a comparative analysis is conducted to evaluate TLSF(Teaching and Learning for a Sustainable Future) program, which is a module type environmental education program developed by UNESCO, and the Korean environmental education curriculum. The Korean environmental curriculum is mainly focused on conceptualization and the matters of fact. As a result, students may not be able to acquire contextualized and synthesized views on the environmental problems. The Korean environmental curriculum hardly supplies ample variety in the methods of teaching, learning and assessment, or the theories characteristic of the environmental education. Thus it would not make a useful material for teachers to reorganize various materials to be applied in class. TLSF program would be useful for a teacher to use in the environment education field because it supplies not only many various activities and samples for constructing a proper program but also the theoretical base and examples for education and assessment strategy. Finally, TLSF also offers the theoretical base of the environment education for the assessment, and it makes the best use of feedback from the environment educational field for improving its own quality. In conclusion, this study can be a meaningful preview for those who are involved in the process of developing of a curriculum, which consists of steps like formulating theories for developing a curriculum, organizing the curriculum contents, activating and evaluating a curriculum.

  • A self directed learning(SDL) has been identified as an important ability for medical graduates. The purpose of this study was 1) to measure the SDLR of medical students, 2) to compare the relationship among the student perceptions of assessment, preference of instructional methods with SDLR. This study was conducted in 2006 at A University College of Medicine. The instrument applied to this study was SDLR. Korean version of Guglielmino's SDLR for Adults. The $SPSSwin^{(R)}$ program was used to analyze the data and statistics such as correlation. F-test, and Chi square test. Firstly. the mean scores of the SDLR of first, second. fourth year were 114.8, 107.9 and 106.2. This results showed a significant relationship among years (p<.001). Secondly the relationship between the student perceptions of assessment and SDLR was insignificant. The SDLR high scores students had a tendency to favorite "Discussion" and "Bedside teaching". This study found out the problems of medical education to enhance self directed learning ability for medical students. Further study is needed so that suitable instructional methods for medical students can be conducted in curriculum.

  • Since performance assessment was introduced in Korea in the middle of 1990, many problems which include its definition, characters, methods and scorings etc., raised in mathematics education worlds. Therefore this paper presents the theoretical background of performance assessment in mathematics education. Contemporary teaching and loaming theories reject stimulus-response theory which emphasizes outcome. Performance assessment emphasizes the assessment which reveal learning process and various strategies. And it bases on constructivism and socio-cultural perspective. This paper presents paradigms which guide the roles and purposes of assessment. The paradigms include conventional paradigm, constructivist paradigm and critical paradigm. There is a close correlation between constructivist paradigm and performance assessment. Assessment has to grasp the development of present and the possibility of development of future of the students. Performance assessment must be fixed the new paradigm of education for this purpose.

  • Purpose : Since PBL was first developed by Howard Barrows at McMaster, it has been adopted as one of the best teaching and learning methods in medical schools throughout the world. However, the educational superiority of PBL relative to traditional approaches is less clear. Given the somewhat extensive resources required for the operation of PBL curriculum, this gives reason for concern. The aim of this study is to review experiences of PBL in other medical schools and learn how to implement PBL in our school. Methods : This study was undertaken in two stages. In the first stage, PBL curricular examples in 7 medical schools (University of Pennsylvania, University of Melbourne, University of Maastricht, McMaster University, Flinders University, Harvard medical school. University of California at L.A.) were collected and summarized. In the second stage, a careful search for articles of journals published since 2000 regarding PBL group assessment, effectiveness of PBL and group facilitation skills was conducted. Results : PBL is generally introduced in a core curriculum in undergraduate medical education. Relating to small group assessment, the perception of students has been well developed. but the current PBL assessment tool needs to be revised, to develop thinking skills of students. The PBL graduates considered themselves as having much better interpersonal skills, better competencies in problem solving and self-directed learning than the non-PBL graduates. Tutors used various techniques to raise awareness, facilitate the group process and direct learning. Conclusions : The following three aspects can be regarded as important in this study. First, to implement PBL in our school more effectively, it might be considered, which curriculum content can be best learned with PBL. Second, to enhance students' thinking skills during PBL, a new assessment tool needs to be developed. Third, tutors' competencies are important to facilitate, group process, so it would be worthwhile including in staff development.

  • Standards-curriculum based archival contents for education is the best effective teaching and learning units for historical thinking abilities. This paper purposes a developing procedures of an archival contents for education that is theoretical instructions of developing an archival contents for education by the National Archives of Korea. This paper can be used of the theoretical bases for the National Archives of Korea by proposing the methodology of development of an archival contents for education. The developing procedures of an archival contents for education is the same with the procedures of developing an e-learning contents that has planning, analyzing, designing, developing and assessing steps but it is characterized by an archival contents for education that is curriculum standards analysis, collection analysis, and detailed design for structured formats in effective-accomplishments for teaching-learning objectives. I propose the procedures for determining teaching-learning subjects that enable the development of an archival contents for education by curriculum standards analysis. I also propose the procedures for deriving the key words from the teaching-learning subjects. Collection analysis methods analyze key records that correspond to the learning subjects according to the selection criteria of primary sources. In the steps of designing, titles of contents and contents structures have to be determined and storyboards based on flowchart of learning have to be made of according to the results of analyses. In the steps of developing contents, making a copy of primary sources like a original is the key points. And also in the steps of assessment, products of teaching-learning contents to effectively achieve the teaching-learning objectives have to be estimated by the appraisal board. Finally I propose that user's survey research after the services have to be reflected on contents updates and new developments of contents.
