  • This study investigated the effect of pre service teacher's empathic ability on teaching ethics, and child abuse report intention. The subjects were 168 pre-service teachers attending a university located in a micropolitan city. Questionnaires, which required self-reporting by pre service teacher, were used to investigate teacher's empathic ability, teaching ethics and child abuse report intention. The collected data were analyzed by frequency, percent, Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis and stepwise-regression analysis. From the major study findings, first, pre-service teacher's empathic ability was positively correlated with teaching ethics and child abuse report intention. Pre-service teacher's "take perspective", "imagine" of the cognitive empathic ability's subfactor was positively correlated with teaching ethics. Especially, empathic interest was positively correlated with teaching ethics. Cognitive empathy ability showed the highest relationship with ethics for early child. Emotional empathy showed the highest relationship with ethics in society. Second, the pre-service teacher's teaching ethics were influenced by taking perspective, imagining, and empathic attention. These results demonstrate the need to incorporate perspectives in the development of programs to promote pre - service early childhood teacher ethics and child abuse reporting.

  • This study surveyed the elementary school teachers' use of visual representations and their perceptions of the functions of visual representations in the teaching of electricity unit. A total of 110 elementary teachers who have experiences in teaching electricity unit responded to online survey. The result showed firstly that most of the teachers use visual representations in their teaching and it is mostly limited to those presented in textbooks or images that they can get easily from internet search. Secondly, elementary teachers thought that they have high ability in using visual representations and low ability in understanding students' visual presentation ability. Thirdly, visual representations are more often preferred to be used as teacher-centered ways than student-centered ways for motivating students and conceptual understanding. However, in case of scientific inquiry, both teacher-centered and student-centered ways were equally preferred. Lastly, the teachers' perceptions of the functions of visual representations were categorized into 'teaching-instrumental function', 'learning-instrumental function', 'communicative-instrumental function' and 8 subcategories were found. The most frequent function was the 'information delivery function' in the 'teaching-instrumental function' category. Implications for teacher education and further studies were discussed.

  • This study examined the effects of childcare teachers' empathy, teaching commitment, and feelings of happiness. The subjects were 111 childcare teachers in U city. The frequency, reliability, and correlation analysis were performed using the SPSS 22.0 program, and regression analysis was performed on the causal relationship between the variables. First, the childcare teacher's cognitive empathy factor had a positive effect on the sense of happiness. On the other hand, the emotional empathy factor, a sub-factor of the empathy ability, did not affect the feeling of happiness. Second, the childcare teacher's teaching commitment had a significant positive effect on happiness. This means that a higher cognitive empathy factor, a sub-factor of the childcare teacher's empathy ability, resulted in a higher sense of happiness. Moreover, a higher instructional commitment factor indicated a higher sense of happiness. This study provides basic data for preparing measures to improve the sense of happiness of childcare teachers by grasping the relationship between childcare teachers' empathy ability, teaching commitment, and feelings of happiness.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception on video material making and the effect on science teaching ability after conducting non-face-to-face teaching material making activity for elementary pre-service teachers. This activity consisted two processes. One is that elementary pre-service teachers conduct inquiry, understand related science concepts, analyze science textbooks and then make video material. The other is that they watch video materials produced by colleagues. This study was conducted on 89 elementary pre-service teachers for 8 weeks. After this activity was completed, the perception on video material making and the effect on science teaching ability of elementary pre-service teachers were investigated, and the results were analyzed. In the process of making and watching non-face-to-face teaching materials, elementary pre-service teachers showed positive results in teaching-learning, video production, and emotion and attitude toward video material making. In addition, it was found that they improved their science teaching ability through this activity and were very satisfied with this activity. However, they also mentioned several disappointments such as exclusion of learners' right to self-determination, lack of various communication channels, and errors in content of materials. This suggests that if these problems are solved, non-face-to-face classes can also be a good form of class.
