  • Refinery plant producing petroleum products from crude oil has significantly contributed to the creation of the national interests as a leading engineering industries. However, domestic Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) companies are facing heavy competition for orders. Domestic EPC companies as EPC contractors are faced with some problems such as undertaking responsibility for FEED packages produced by other FEED companies. But domestic EPC contractors are unfamiliar to development and validation of FEED packages. It causes poor profitability and lower competitiveness of domestic companies. It is necessary for domestic companies to have capability to perform FEED activities in order to overcome these limitations instead of focusing on EPC phase after FEED phase. The systematic procedure is needed to perform the FEED activities, however, there are present difficulties on it due to the lack of experience in FEED packages development which require various engineering knowledge of chemical process, mechanics, electrics, instrumentation, civil engineering. This study has applied systems engineering method which is multi-disciplinary approach to derive and verify the solution to meet the customer's needs when the complex system is developed to task execution process development of FEED activities for refinery plant. The problems that may occur in the future were identified in advance by taking into account the various stakeholders and system context through the application of systems engineering. It helps to develop the task execution process systematically. The developed task execution process of FEED activities is planned to make effectiveness verified by engineering professionals experienced in FEED and continually enhance this process by field application.

  • An effective allocation of requested number of processors to newly incoming tasks in two-dimensional (2D) mesh interconnection networks is very important for achieving the desired high performance and resource utilization. It also needs to guarantee the complete recognition of the free submeshes based on contiguous and available processors with minimum overhead. An efficient task allocation algorithm for 2D meshes is presented in this paper. By employing a new approach for searching the one-dimensional array, the proposed algorithm can find the available submesh without the scanning of the entire 2D array unlike earlier designs. As a result, the new algorithm can significantly reduce the task allocation time. Comprehensive computer simulation shows that the average allocation time and waiting delay are much smaller than earlier irrespective of the size of meshes. The hardware overhead is comparable to other algorithms.

  • In Internet of Things (IoT) environments, users are required to search for IoT devices necessary to access services for accomplishing their tasks. As IoT technologies advance, a user task will utilize various types of IoT-based services that are deployed in an IoT environment. Therefore, to accomplish a user task effectively, the services that utilize IoT devices need to be found in a certain geographical region. In addition, the service discovery needs to be accomplished in a stable manner while considering dynamically changing IoT environments. To deal with these issues, we propose two service discovery methods that consider geographic cohesiveness of services in IoT environments. We compare the effectiveness of the proposed methods against a traditional service discovery algorithm that does not consider geographic cohesiveness.

  • Objective: In this study, two types of foot-controlled mouse devices are compared with a hand mouse in the input tasks requiring repetitively switching between a keyboard and a mouse. Background: Foot-controlled mouse devices have been developed for persons with impairments in the mobility of their hands. However, some researchers insisted that the foot-controlled mouse devices could be effectively used by the persons with no limits to their hand mobility. There are needs to investigate the efficiency of the foot-controlled mouse devices, when they are used by the nondisabled people. Method: Participants conducted the input tasks, requiring repetitive switches between a keyboard and a computer mouse. The used computer mouse devices were two types of foot-controlled mouse and a typical hand mouse. Participants performed three types of input task for five days and three types of task performance were measured; the number of completed input tasks within a given practice time, subjective satisfaction level and the time wasted for the mouse control. Results: For five days, the performance of input tasks sharply increased in input tasks by foot-controlled mouse devices rather than a hand mouse. After five days, the level of satisfaction on the foot-controlled mouse devices approached to about 76% of a hand mouse satisfaction level. The control time of the foot-controlled mouse devices also approached to about 109% of a hand mouse control time. Conclusion: After only five-day practice, the input task performance by foot-controlled mouse devices approached to that of a hand mouse. This result may suggest that the foot-controlled mouse devices can be effectively used as an alternative input device for the nondisabled people, if input tasks are easy and enough practice time is provided. Application: The results of this study might help to design foot-controlled mouse devices and to expend the usage of them.

  • In this paper, we proposed an asymmetric multi-core processor scheduling scheme which is based on the mileage of each core. We considered a big-LITTLE multi-core processor structure, which consists of low power consuming LITTLE cores with general performance and high power consuming big cores with high performance. If a task needs to be processed, the processor decides a core type (big or LITTLE) to handle the task, and then investigate the core with the shortest mileage among unoccupied cores. Then assigns the task to the core. We developed a mileage-based balancing algorithm for asymmetric multi-core assignment and showed that the proposed scheduling scheme is more cost-effective compared to the traditional scheme from a management perspective. Simulation is also conducted for the purpose of performance evaluation of our proposed algorithm.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the tasks developed through task development activities with emphasis on mathematical connectivity, and to provide implications for teacher education to enhance teacher's competence. For this purpose, I analyzed the task developed by 52 pre-teachers through the activities. As a result, they combined mathematics with 'other subjects', 'mathematics', 'phenomenon', 'technology' and 'real life'. And they also made various internal connections of 'Different representation', 'Part-whole relationship', 'Implication', 'Procedure', and 'Instruction-oriented connection'. From the point of view of teacher knowledge, the study revealed that CCK and SCK were positive in terms of 'logical' and 'expression', and KCT as 'strategic' was meaningful but disappointing in diversity; however in terms of 'level', the KCS was limited due to tasks that did not meet the level of students. As such, this analysis reveals that teachers continue to struggle with understanding students' level, but exhibit little difficulty with 'logic', 'expression' and 'strategy. This being the case, teacher education needs to place additional emphasis in understanding students' levels and planning corresponding activities.

  • The construction industry has made great strides in the past decades by utilizing computer programs including CAD. However, compared to other manufacturing sectors, labor productivity is low due to the high proportion of workers' knowledge-based task in addition to simple repetitive task. Therefore, the knowledge-based task efficiency of workers should be improved by recognizing the visual information of computers. A computer needs a lot of training data, such as the ImageNet project, to recognize visual information. This study, aim at proposing building facade datasets that is efficiently constructed by quickly collecting building facade data through portal site road view and automatically labeling using deep learning as part of construction of image dataset for visual recognition construction by the computer. As a method proposed in this study, we constructed a dataset for a part of Dongseong-ro, Daegu Metropolitan City and analyzed the utility and reliability of the dataset. Through this, it was confirmed that the computer could extract the significant facade information of the portal site road view by recognizing the visual information of the building facade image. Additionally, In contribution to verifying the feasibility of building construction image datasets. this study suggests the possibility of securing quantitative and qualitative facade design knowledge by extracting the facade design knowledge from any facade all over the world.
