Effects of shear deformation on the effective length of tapered columns with I-section for steel portal frames

  • Based on the stiffness equation of the tapered beam element involving the effects of axial force and shear deformation, numerical investigations are carried out on elastic instability for web-linearly tapered columns with I-section of steel portal frames. Effects of shear deformation on the effective length of the tapered columns with I-section are studied. An efficient approach for determining the effective length of the tapered portal frame columns considering effects of shear deformation is proposed.

Aerodynamic measurements of across-wind loads and responses of tapered super high-rise buildings

  • A series of wind tunnel tests were conducted on tapered super high-rise buildings with a square cross section by applying synchronous pressure measurement technology. The effects of global strategy of chamfered modification on aerodynamic loads and wind-induced responses were investigated. Moreover, local aerodynamic strategies of opening a ventilation slot in the corner of equipment and refuge floors were carried out. Results show that the global strategy of tapered elevation increased the vortex shedding frequency, but reduced vortex shedding energy, leading to reduction of across-wind aerodynamic loads and responses. Chamfered modification suppressed the across-wind vortex shedding effect on tapered buildings. Opening the ventilation slot further suppressed the strength of vortex shedding and reduced the residual energy related to vortex shedding in aerodynamic loads of chamfered buildings. Finally, the optimized locations of local aerodynamic strategies were suggested.

  • 고층건물의 진동응답을 저감시키기 위한 다양한 방법들이 연구되고 있다. 이들 진동응답의 저감 연구는 건물의 외관을 병화 시키는 방법과 건물에 부가감쇠장치를 설치하는 방법들이 있는데 본 논문에서는 고층 건물의 형태의 변화에 다른 진동변위응답의 특성을 파악하고자 한다. 고층건물의 형태변화 중에서도 외관에 테이퍼를 수는 방법을 사용하였다. 기류의 특성은 도심 및 교외지역을 중심으로 풍동실험을 실시하였다.

Wind-induced Aerodynamic Instability of Super-tall Buildings with Various Cross-sectional Shapes

  • The effectiveness of aerodynamic modification to reduce wind loadings has been widely reported. However, most of previous studies have been investigated dynamic forces and pressure distributions on tall buildings with various unconventional configurations. This study was investigated dynamic characteristics and aerodynamic instability of super-tall buildings with unconventional configurations through extensive aeroelastic model experiments. Seventeen types of supertall building models were considered such as basic and corner modification with corner cut, chamfered, oblique opening, tapered, inversely tapered, bulged, helical with twist angles of $90^{\circ}$, $180^{\circ}$, $270^{\circ}$, $360^{\circ}$ and composite with $360^{\circ}$ helical & corner cut, 4-tapered & $360^{\circ}$ helical & corner cut, setback & corner cut, setback & $45^{\circ}$ rotate. As a result, aerodynamic characteristics of helical models with single modification are superior to those of other models with single modification. However, effect of twist angle for helical model is negligible. Further, the 4-tapered & $360^{\circ}$helical & corner cut model is most effective in reducing the along- and across-wind fluctuating displacement responses in all of experimental models.

비정형 초고층 건물의 바람에 의한 편심응답 특성 (Characteristics of wind-Induced Coupled Motion of Tapered and Setback Tall Buildings)

  • For most of recent tall buildings, one characteristic is that their building shapes vary with height such as taper and setback, and this implies that the distribution of their structural components may also vary with height. Because of these structural variations, although the sectional shapes of these buildings are symmetric, it is difficult to say whether or not they are structurally symmetric. The acceleration responses of structurally asymmetric tall buildings are larger than those of non-eccentric buildings, thus raising the possibility of problems during strong winds and typhoons. This paper describes wind tunnel tests carried out using building models with height variations and acceleration response analyses, and discusses the resulting response characteristics. For tapered and setback buildings, although the across-wind accelerations are larger than those of a square building, the total root-mean-square accelerations remain small because of smaller along-wind and torsional rms accelerations. And it was found that the effects of statistical couplings between along-wind force and other two forces are negligible.

  • This paper has the object of investigating dynamic stability of stiffened tapered thick plate with concentrated mass on Pasternak foundation by means of finite element method and providing kinematic design data for mat of building structures. Finite element analysis of stiffened tapered thick plate is done by use of rectangular finite element with 8-nodes. In order to analysis plate which is supported on Pasternak foundation, the Winkler foundation parameter is varied with 10, 100, 1000 and the shear foundation parameter is 5, 10, concentrated mass is $0.25m_c$, $1.0m_c$, tapered ratio is 0.25, 0.5. The ratio of In-plane force to critical load is applied as $0.4\sigma_{cr},\;0.6\sigma_{cr},\;0.8\sigma_{cr}$ respectively. This paper analyzed varying tapered ratio.

  • This paper has the object of investigating natural frequencies of tapered thick plate, tapered ratio, thick plate's opening size by means of finite element method and providing kinetic design data for mat of building structures. Free vibration analysis that tapered thick plate in this paper. Finite element analysis of rectangular plate is done by use of rectangular finite element with 8-nodes. In order to analysis plate which is varioued of plate thickness. the thickness is varied with 5, 10, 15, 20 and the tapered ratio is applied as 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0 respectively. This paper is analyzed varying thickness by taper ratio.

The Winkler parameter is 0, 10, 100, 1000, the shear foundation parameter is 0, 10 and the taper ratio is 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8.
