  • A study was carried out to find distribution of Legionella spp. in hot water supplying systems of buildings in Seoul. Water samples were taken from the hot water taps in three research institute buildings during the period from the 2nd to 27th February, 1987. And all of the three buildings were supplied with hot water from the same central hot water tank. GVPC BCYEa and blood agar were used for the isolation of Legionella pneurnophila and slide agglutination test (SAT) was performed to identify their strain types. Main findings were as follows 1. 44 samples taken from hot tap-water revealed 20% of positive culture and 44 samples taken from hot water spouts revealed 11% of positive culture. 2. The 78% of positive samples taken from hot water was obtained from 25.1$\circ$C~45.0$\circ$C temperature range. 3. Only, Legionella pneumophila serogroup 3 was identified and most of them has been than 2$\mu$m in length. 4. The densities of the Legionella pneurnophila isolated from hot water samples were within the range of $1.0\times 10^2$ to $1.1\times 10^3$ CFU/l and their densities isolated from hot water spouts were either 1 CFU/plate or 2 CFU/plate.

  • Objectives : in recent years, there have been some case reports about liver injuries suspected to be caused by Heshouwu, the root of Polygonum multiflorum. So, I investigated liver function tests of patients who had taken Heshouwu, to know whether Heshouwu was hepatotoxic. Methods : I surveyed whether Heshouwu caused liver injury in patients, who had been admitted and taken Heshouwu at Dongguk University International Hospital, from May 2005 to July 2008. I looked over all the liver function tests of those patients, done during medication and 30 days after. Results : Among 1,449 inpatients, there were 124 patients who had taken Heshouwu. Among those 124 patients, 14 cases whose liver function tests were abnormal before medication were excluded. 69 cases who did not take liver function test 30 days after were also excluded. As a result, 41 patients were enrolled, and their mean dosage was 14.04(8-24) g/day, and the mean medication period was 13.8 (1-89) days. During and after medication, there were no abnormal liver function test results at all, in the enrolled cases. Conclusions : Roughly speaking, according to the above results, it seems that taking Heshouwu for about two weeks as per the commonly taken dosage did not cause hepatotoxicity, though we needs more laboratory and clinical research to reach a more definitive conclusion.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the safety and the efficacy of Korean herbal, western and combination medicine use in patients with abnormal liver function tests. Methods: We investigated nerve disease patients with abnormal liver function tests who were treated with Korean herbal, western and combination medicine at Dong-Eui University Oriental Hospital from January 2011 to August 2011. We compared aspartic aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and total bilirubin (T-bil) levels before and after taking medicine and excluded patients who had liver-related disease when admitted. Results: AST and ALT were decreased significantly in patients who had taken herbal, western medicine. AST, ALT and ALP were decreased significantly in patients who had taken combination medicine. Compare to herbal medicine, AST, ALT and ALP were decreased significantly in patients who had taken western medicine, and ALT and ALP were decreased significantly in patients who had taken combination medicine. There were no significant differences between western and combination medicine. Conclusions: This study suggests that prescribed Korean herbal medicine, at least, does not injure liver function for patients', moreover, it was shown to be effective in patients with abnormal liver function tests.

  • The current study was conducted to investigate effects of sera taken from Hanwoo at different age on adipocyte differentiation. Sera were taken from Korean native (Hanwoo) steers at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months of age, respectively and supplemented to 3T3-L1 preadipocytes after the cells reached confluence and maintained 10 days thereafter. For the first 2 days (48 h), cells were induced to differentiate by addition of differentiation factors, methylisobutylxanthine, daxamethasone, and insulin. After the differentiation, the cells were incubated without differentiation factors except insulin. The cells lost their fibroblastic shape and showed round-up appearances after 10 days incubation with FBS and the sera of Hanwoo steers. Big lipid droplets appeared in the cells cultured with FBS and the sera taken from Hanwoo at 18 and 24 months of age. After 18 months of age, GPDH activity was statistically higher than 6 and/or 12 months of age (P < 0.05). Based on morphology and Sn-glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase activities, Hanwoo steers expressed aged-dependent adipogenic activities, indicating that aged sera may result in high adipocyte differentiation. It is concluded that the 18 months of age may be 'threshold' to express major adipogenic activities. This may strongly support previous field studies reporting considerable increase in fat contents of Hanwoo carcass at over 18 months of age.

  • The purpose of this study was to establish the principle and the clinical application of dynamic tomogram of a human head by using the dental machine. For this study, a block of wax with details lying at three parallel planes and a human dry skull were used. This experiment was reexamined the dynamic tomogram with specialized radiographic device and view box, and the radiograms taken by the change of exposure time according to the numbers of film used in x-ray taking and taken according to the change of kVp and the types of film were analyzed density with the densitometer. From this study, the obtained results were as follows: 1. When the underexposed radiograms taken by angulation of clockwise and counter-clockwise direction of the film and skull. were superimposed and moved laterally, it was possible to focus on right and left jaws and teeth. 2. The superimposition of the two underexposed radiograms according to each condition of x-ray taking showed some differencies in density visually, and the measurement of density with the densitometer was 1.23 to 1.57 in 75kVp and 1.34 to 1.70 in 90kVp. 3. The superimposition of the two underexposed radiograms according to the kinds of x-ray film showed almost equal density visually, and the measurement of density with the densiometer was 1.34 to 1.37. 4. When seven radiograms taken by each condition of x-ray taking were superimposed on the view box, a intense rear light of view box didn't transilluminate film density regardless of the conditions of x-ray taking. Even though seven radiograms taken according to types of film were superimposed on the view box, a more intense rear light of view box was required to transilluminate total density of films. 6. Long film-object distance resulted in the enlargement and blurring of radiographic images.

  • The records of 268 patients, who were diagnosed as spontaneous pneumothorax during the period 1975 to 1984, treated at the department of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, Hanyang University Hospital, were reviewed retrospectively to evaluate the effect of surgical intervention on each indications. Of these,.61 patients [22.8%] were taken operation to treat the pneumothorax after closed thoracostomy. We have classified the 61 patients to evaluate the therapeutic effect on each indications. And the therapeutic effect is based on the chest tube indwelling days. The results were as follows: 1. The chest tube indwelling days of the group who were taken closed thoracostomy only was average 14.13*9.17 days [range 5-66 days], and that of the group who were finally taken the thoracotomy after closed thoracostomy was 21.85*12.30 days [range 5-55 days]. 2. The indications of thoractomy were thoracoscopic findings, recurrence and continuous air leakage. 3. The chest tube indwelling day of the group who was taken thoracotomy by thoracoscopic findings was average 11.67*6.51 day, that was relatively short compared to those of the other groups. 4. The continuous air leakage group after closed thoracostomy was subdivided into three subgroups, continuous air leakage in 1st attack, thoracoscopic findings in 1st attack, and recurrence. 5. Of these, the chest tube indwelling day of the subgroup, who was taken operation by thoracoscopic findings, was 21.33e8.26, that was relatively short compared with those of the other subgroups. We use the thoracoscope as excellent diagnostic tool to detect the operation indication in the spontaneous pneumothorax patients. And we gain the benefits to shorten the chest tube indwelling days and admission days, and also to protect the recurrence.

  • The purpose of this study was to observe mandibular condyle shape and position in an asymptomatic population. In order to carry out this study, 142 temporomandibular joints in 71 adults(35 males, 36 females), who were asymptomatic for temporomandibular joint disorders and had no history of prosthodontic or orthodontic treatments, were selected, and radiographed using the Accurd-200 head holder(Denar Co., U.S.A) for transcranial radiograms and the Sectography(Denar Co., U.S.A) for lateral individualized corrected tomograms. Mandibular condyles were classified morphologically and evaluated in positional relationships with articular fossae and articular eminences at centric occlusion and 1 inch mouth opening. The obtained results were as follows; 1. In the classification of mandibular condyle shape, the convex type was more prevalent in transcranial radiograms and tomograms taken at medial, central, and lateral locations. 2. In the mandibular condyle position at centric occlusion, the mandibular condyles were placed posterior to the center of articular fossae in transcranial radiograms and anterior to the center of articular fossae in tomograms taken at medial, central, and lateral locations. 3. In the mandibular condyle position in right and left TMJs at centric occlusion, the mandibular condyles were placed bilateral asymmetric relationships to the articular fossae in transcranial radiograms and tomograms taken at medial, central, and lateral locations. 4. In the mandibular condyle position at 1 inch mouth opening, the mandibular condyles were placed anterior to the articular eminences in transcranial radiograms and tomograms taken at central location and posterior to the articular eminences in tomograms taken at medial and lateral locations.

  • The purpose of the study was to find an effect of honey on the enzyme activity of Sprague Dawley rats. All experimental rats were fed ad libitum for seven weeks with 68% saccharide diet and at same time fed administratively with 10% and 20% water solution of acacia, sumac, polyflower honey, and sucrose, respectively. The level of LDH activity in serum of rat taken diet with acasia, sumac, and polyflower honey were increased in comparison with the control group. The level of $\alpha$-HBDH activity in serum of rat taken diet with acasia, sumac, polyflower honey, and sugar solution were increased than that other honey solution. The level of GOT and GPT activity in serum was increased by the feeding of solution of 20% acacia honey. The level of ICD activity in serum of rat taken diet with sumac honey was increased but was decreased notably by the feeding of polyflower honey. The level of G-6-P DH activity in whole blood of rat taken diet with honey solutions were decreased, but the level of aldolase activity in serum of rat taken diet with honey solutions were increased.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to assess the validity of three-dimensional (3D) facial scan taken with facial scanner and digital photo wrapping on the cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: Twenty-five patients had their CBCT scan, two-dimensional (2D) standardized frontal photographs and 3D facial scan obtained on the same day. The facial scans were taken with a facial scanner in an upright position. The 2D standardized frontal photographs were taken at a fixed distance from patients using a camera fixed to a cephalometric apparatus. The 2D integrated facial models were created using digital photo wrapping of frontal photographs on the corresponding CBCT images. The 3D integrated facial models were created using the integration process of 3D facial scans on the CBCT images. On the integrated facial models, sixteen soft tissue landmarks were identified, and the vertical, horizontal, oblique and angular distances between soft tissue landmarks were compared among the 2D facial models and 3D facial models, and CBCT images. Result: The results showed no significant differences of linear and angular measurements among CBCT images, 2D and 3D facial models except for Se-Sn vertical linear measurement which showed significant difference for the 3D facial models. The Bland-Altman plots showed that all measurements were within the limit of agreement. For 3D facial model, all Bland-Altman plots showed that systematic bias was less than 2.0 mm and 2.0° except for Se-Sn linear vertical measurement. For 2D facial model, the Bland-Altman plots of 6 out of 11 of the angular measurements showed systematic bias of more than 2.0°. Conclusion: The facial scan taken with facial scanner showed a clinically acceptable performance. The digital 2D photo wrapping has limitations in clinical use compared to 3D facial scans.
