  • Objectives This study aimed to provide a basis for treatment of taeeum person by analysing published case reports and case series in Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine. Methods We reviewed case reports and case series of taeeum person in the Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine from 2006 to 2015.Results Of the forty papers, reporting 182 cases of taeeum person. Thirty-five papers reported 6 types of Sasang Constitutional Medicine pattern. A total of 10 types of interventions were described, of which herbal medicine (100%) was most frequently used. A total of 30 types of outcome measeure were used in papers, for which symptom change (79.2%) was most frequently used. A total of 8 types of diagnosis criteria were used in 38 papers. Conclusions A sufficient number of clinical studies are warranted to provide a clinical evidence for treatment of taeeum person.

  • Objectives Sasang constitutional medicine is a traditional Korean medicine that classifies humans into four constitutions in consideration of individual differences in physical, psychological, and physiological characteristics. In this paper, we proposed a method to classify Taeeum person (TE) and Non-Taeeum person (NTE), Soeum person (SE) and Non-Soeum person (NSE), and Soyang person (ST) and Non-Soyang person (NSY) using a convolutional neural network with only facial images. Methods Based on the convolutional neural network VGG16 architecture, transfer learning is carried out on the facial images of 3738 subjects to classify TE and NTE, SE and NSE, and SY and NSY. Data augmentation techniques are used to increase classification performance. Results The classification performance of TE and NTE, SE and NSE, and SY and NSY was 77.24%, 85.17%, and 80.18% by F1 score and 80.02%, 85.96%, and 72.76% by Precision-Recall AUC (Area Under the receiver operating characteristic Curve) respectively. Conclusions It was found that Soeum person had the most heterogeneous facial features as it had the best classification performance compared to the rest of the constitution, followed by Taeeum person and Soyang person. The experimental results showed that there is a possibility to classify constitutions only with facial images. The performance is expected to increase with additional data such as BMI or personality questionnaire.

  • 1. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the serum lipid, digestive enzymes, thyroid hormone of each Sasang type groups which were classified by Sasang medicine specialist. 2. Methode: The subjects were 1084 (male:female=399:685) person with 371 of Taeeum type, 324 of Soeum type, 389 of Soyang type after the Sasang type classification. The blood samples of the 1084 subjects were to analyze the serum lipid(triglyceride, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol), digestive enzymes(lipase, amylase), thyroid hormone(T3, TSH). The general linear model (SPSS 12.0) were used for the analysis. 3. Results: Taeeum type group ($133.50\pm89.84$, $189.41\pm33.11$, $107.29\pm28.66$) showed significantly higher triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol than other two group. In digestive enzymes(lipase, amylase), we found significant differences in the order of Soeum>Soyang>Taeeum. Soeum type group($116.23\pm21.38$) has lower T3 than Soyang type group ($119.90\pm21.60$) with marginal significance (p=0.066). 4. Conclusions: The Results of present study showed that Taeeum type showed significantly highest in triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol. Soeum type showed significantly highest in digestive enzymes. Blood sample of each Sasang type group will serve as an important evidence for further study showing that the Sasang typology has biological basis.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the effectiveness of Korean Medicine treatment on nipple eczema. Methods: Two patients were treated with herbal medicine, acupuncture, wet dressing with herbal medicine and pharmaco-acupuncture. Photographs of lesions were taken to evaluate the changes in symptoms. Results: Two patients' pruritus, discharge, crusting, excoriation, erythema, and condition of lesions were improved after treatment. Conclusions: This study shows that Korean Medicine was effective to treat nipple eczema.

  • Purpose: Hwabyung is a culture-bound syndrome in Korea, characterized by emotional stress such as anger, depression, and anxiety. The purpose of the present study was to explore the characteristics of Hwabyung patients, based on constitutional medicine, for their symptoms, duration, and coping styles. Method: Participants were 57 Hwabyung patients selected by Hwabyung criteria. They were also diagnosed for their constitution by doctors specialized in constitutional medicine. Each participant was asked to respond to a variety of items such as cause and duration of stress, symptoms of hwabyung, anger and depression, and coping styles. Eight patients were excluded from the total sample; two male patients and six patients unable to be diagnosed for any particular type of constitution. Thus, final sample was 49 female hwabyung patients, which will be reported in what follow. Result: To begin with, constitutional type revealed significant differences in such coping styles as 'perseverance,' 'positive interpretation,' 'positive comparison,' and 'emotional pacification.' More specifically, post-hoc comparison revealed that Taeeumin(person who have taeeum characteristics) was higher in 'perseverance' compared-to other two types of constitution. Taeumin also revealed higher score than Soeumin(person who have soeum characteristics) in 'positive comparison.' With respect to the marital status, the married compared to the unmarried showed higher score in 'anger-control,' and lower score in 'anger-in.' The married compared to the unmarried, regarding coping styles, also showed higher score in 'accommodation,' but lower score in 'emotional expression.' The duration of hwabyung revealed that the longer duration of hwabyung, the more frequent utilization of 'positive interpretation' and 'emotional pacification. Conclusion: The main purpose, the exploration of hwabyung based on four types of constitution, was not supported, as a whole in the present study. However, marital status and duration of hwabyung appear to influence on emotional stress (e.g., anger) as well as coping styles, suggesting that these variables should be dealt with in future studies on hwabyung.

  • The tinnitus is a very common otorhinolaryngologic disease. But, we do not know the exact cause and the healing method of that. We have a case report of the patient who has both tinnitus during two years. He has also chest distress, chest pain, shoulder.neck pain, obesity. In Oriental Medicine, the cuases of tinnitus have diagnosed as the hepatic fire, phlegm-fire, heart fire, deficiency of the kidney, deficiency of vital energy and blood, and so on. In this study the patient classified by Sasang constitutional medicine, and the cuase of tinnitus diagnosed as cold turbid phlegm in Middle Cho, had a medical effects. And in the result, the other symptoms are reduced. So we report the healing process and result of this patient in this study.
