Recently, various researches have been attempted to effectively display pseudo-aural senses to the hearing-impaired or the deaf, using vibro-tactile stimulus as well as visual sense. Particularly, it is reported that as complementary senses to support the visual sense, tactile senses displayed by either speakers or vibration motors improve the reality sense significantly but do not nearly improve the emotional sense. Thus, in this study, the thermal sense is selected as another complementary sense to support the pseudo-aural sense display and it is investigated whether the thermal sense could generate a pseudo-aural sense or not. For this purpose, a thermal display module which could effectively display the desired thermal sense is implemented. Then, experiments have been conducted to subjects, which provide them with various types of stimuli combined with the aural, the vibrotactile, and the thermal stimuli along with the visual information. It can be confirmed, through statistical analysis on the data collected from experiments, that subjects could feel a pseudo-thermal sense closer to the real thermal sense which the normal subject feel from both the visual and the aural information, particularly either i) with the thermal stimulus along with the visual information or ii) with both the thermal and the vibrotactile stimuli along with the visual information than only with the visual information. Conclusively, it can be confirmed that the thermal stimulus applied to the skin of the subjects could play a role of effectively displaying pseudo-aural sense related to the thermal sense, as an complementary media for the pseudo-aural display.
Objective: The aim of this study is to give ergonomists the brief summary of the recently published ISO standards on human-system interaction and tips for application of the standards. Background: Standard developers did hard work on developing a standard in a concise manner. But most of standards are often bulky in volume. Readers of the standards are difficult to catch key points from the voluminous contents of standards and intermingle among them. Method: Focused on newly developed display/control technology, this study reviewed the 14 ISO standards on human-system interaction published during 2008-2013 and summarized key points from them. Results: Schematic diagrams and tables concisely illustrated the processes, procedures, dimensions, or best practices recommended by the standards concerning conception, design, and usability testing for consumer products. Conclusion: The standards provided the minimum level of requirements on design and evaluation on the physical input devices, electronic displays, and control interfaces based on the current state of technology. But the minimum requirements specified in the standards nowadays become mandatory ergonomic requirements in global trade world. Application: Ergonomists can take a quick and broad view on international standardization activities on newly developed display/control technology from this summary study.
We propose 'the haptic primitive' for haptic rendering without the need to solve complicated parametric equations. To develop 'the haptic primitive', we adopted "the God-Object Method" as a haptic rendering algorithm and applied 'Constructive Solid Geometry' to manage haptic objects. Besides being used in the 'ghost library' of $PHANToMTM^{TM}$ our method can be used as a basic component for developing tools and libraries that aim to simplify haptic modeling. It can also be applied to tactile display modules and temporal display modules. Ultimately it can be developed into a one-stop haptic modeling tool that enables the user to more conveniently create a tangible CAD systems or a tangible e-ommerce system.

Recently, advances in nano-material researches have opened the door for various transparent conductive materials, which include carbon nanotube, graphene, Ag and Cu nanowire, and printable metal grids. Among them, Ag nanowires are particularly interesting to synthesize because bulk Ag exhibits the highest electrical conductivity among all metals. Here we reviewed recently-published research works introducing various devices from organic light emitting diode to tactile sensing devices, all of which are employing AgNW for a conducting material. They proposed methods to enhance the stretchability and reversibility of the transparent electrodes, and apply them to make various flexible and stretchable electronics. It is expected that Ag nanowires are applicable to a wide range of high-performance, low-cost, stretchable electronic devices.

This paper presents a vibrotactile space mouse which use pin-type vibrotactile display modules and a gyroscope chip. This mouse is a new interface device which is not only an input device as an ordinary space mouse but also a tactile output device. It consists of a space mouse which use gyroscope chip and vibrotactile display modules which have been developed in our own laboratory. Lately, by development of vibrotactile display modules which have small size and consume low power, vibrotactile displays are available in small sized embedded systems such as wireless mouses or mobile devices. Also, development of new sensors like miniature size gyroscope by MEMS technology enables manufacturing of a small space mouse which can be used in the air not in a plane. The vibrotactile space mouse proposed in this paper recognizes motion of a hand using the gyroscope chip and transmits the data to PC through Bluetooth. PC application receives the data and moves pointer. Also, 2 by 3 arrays of pin-type vibrotactile actuators are mounted on the front side of the mouse where fingers of a user's hand contact, and those actuators could be used to represent various information such as gray-scale of an image or Braille patterns for visually impared persons.
In this paper, we proposed a real-time education assistive technology system based on haptic display to improve education environment of total blindness people. The proposed system consist of a lecture and writing S/W for educator and a previously developed haptic display H/W for total blindness people. The one has the major function which is quickly and easily writing to the education data, that will be provided to total blindness people, through familiar UI, the other has the major function which print out the tactile information about the education data. The result of implementing system not only provides a similar result using existing braille instrument and printer, but shows that it is effective performance and functionality because it can print out the education data in real time.

Tactile displays can provide useful information without disturbing others and are particularly useful for people with visual or auditory impairments. They can also complement other displays. In this paper, we present a new vibrotactile display device for wearable, mobile, and ubiquitous computing environments. The proposed vibrotactile device has a $5{\times}5$ array configuration for displaying complex information such as letters, numbers, and haptic patterns as well as simple directional ques and situation awareness alarms. Commercially available coin-type vibration motors are embedded vertically in flexible mounting pads in order to best localize vibrations on the skin. An embedded microprocessor controls the motors sequentially with an advanced tracing mode to increase recognition rate. User studies with the vibrotactile device on the top of the foot show 86.7% recognition rate for alphabet characters after some training. In addition, applying vibrotactile device to driving situation shows 83.9% recognition rate. We also propose some potentially useful application scenarios including Caller Identification for mobile phones and Navigation Aids for GPS systems while driving.
This paper compares presentation methods which are characteristic among museums of natural history in Korea. The different medium for exhibitions are divided into Specimen, Model or Panel Type Displays, Video Presentations, Sound, and Tactile Exhibits, and further classified as Fixed (A Type), Observable (B Type), or Performance Art (C Type) Displays. The museums we studied were the Seodaemun Museum of Natural History, Ewha Womans University Museum of Natural History, Seoul National Science Museum, Gyeryongsan Natural History Museum, the National Science Museum, Mokpo Natural History Museum, and the JejuDo Folklore and Natural History Museum. A study of these museums' approaches to display composition, and exhibition methods according to their exhibit types and contents, revealed the following results: The museums of natural history rely more on Fixed type displays to show information, with appropriate uses of the Observable and the Performance Art type exhibitions. Better utilization of appropriate medium is desired for display contents of Astronomy Space Earth, Minerals Rocks Geology, Animals, Plants, Insects, Prehistoric Organisms Environment, and Anthropology.
This study investigated human operator's perceptual and psychophysical responses to vibrotactile stimulation on various parts of the hand. Using a small vibrotactile display, the effects of three mechanical parameters consisting vibrotactile stimulations, i.e., vibration frequency, pulse-width modulation duty cycle, and number of contactors, on differential thresholds were examined at five different loci of the hand. It was observed that differential threshold varies with vibration frequency and number of active contactors. Differential sensitivity was the greatest at the vibration frequency of 120 Hz. The differential sensitivity was not found to be affected by loci on the hand. The area of stimulation on the hand was also found to be significant in that the sensitivity increased with the number of active contactors. It should be noted that the conclusions from this study generally correspond to those from the previous study on the absolute sensitivity. which means that tactile sensitivity to vibrotactile stimulations can be controlled with a systematic and consistent passion for emulating normal everyday contact on human hands in teleoperation and virtual reality applications.
