  • The article reports findings on: (1) development of emotion assessment scale in evaluating the Television(TV) picture quality; and (2) how psychological and physical factors relate to TV picture quality. A total of 152 adjectives that specifically describe emotional reactions were first selected from a Korean dictionary of adjectives, followed by ratings on their suitability for the evaluation of TV picture quality. The final selection of 19 adjective, based on the reported rating scores greater than 4.1, were used on 126 college students who were asked to perform similarity ratings on the adjectives. Based on factor analyses (i.e., principal component analysis with oblique rotation) on the similarity of scores, the following adjectives were selectively chosen for the development of the new emotion assessment scale: 'neat-messy', 'refreshing-gloomy', 'clean-dirty', 'comfortable-tense', 'smooth-rough', 'bright-dark', 'gorgeous-plain', 'diverse-monotonous', 'satisfying', 'natural', and 'sensuous'. These adjectives composed into two distinct constructs, 'cleanness or smart' factor and 'gorgeousness' factor, which demonstrated sensitivity to changes in brightness, contrast, color, and tint in the TV picture quality, except for changes in sharpness.

  • In digital broadcasting, services such as digital satellite TV, cable TV and digital terrestrial TV, several video programs are compressed by MPEG-2, and then simultaneously transmitted over a conventional CBR (Constant Bit Rate) broadcasting channel. In this paper, we propose a joint quality control scheme to be able to accurately control the relative picture quality among the video programs, which is achieved by simdt;,nL'Ously controlling the video encoders to generate the VBR (Variable Bit Rate) compressed video streams. Our quality control scheme can prevent the video buffer overflow and underflow by total target bit allocation process, and also exactly control the relative picture quality in terms of PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) between some programs requiring higher picture quality and others by rate-distortion modification. Furthermore we present a rate-distortion estimation method for MPEG-2 video, which is base of our joint quality control, and verify its performance by experiments. The most attractive features of this estimation method are as follows: 1) computational complexity is low because main operation for the estimation is to calculate the histogram of OCT coefficients into quantizer; 2) estimation results are very accurate enough to be applied to the practical MPEG-2 video coding applications. Simulation results show that the proposed joint quality control scheme accurately controls the relative picture quality among the video progran1s transmitted over a single channel as well as provides more consistent and higher picture quality than independent coding scheme that encodes each program independently.

  • As a method to compensate the deterioration of the picture quality which was caused by beam profile characteristic in the CRT and the projection screen of HD projection TV, a linear scan velocity modulation(SVM) method has been employed, whose modulation velocity is linearly proportional to the variation in the video signal amplitude. However, the effect of picture quality improvement is not uniform with video signal amplitude in the linear SVM. In this paper, for the optimum SVM effect, we analyze the beam profile characteristic on the HD projection screen and we analyze the SVM effect as function of the differentiated pulse width, the differentiated pulse amplitude and the input signal amplitude. Finally we confirm that the nonlinear SVM method is necessary to get uniform image compensation in the HD projection TV, and we implement the nonlinear SVM circuit. The performance of the realized SVM circuit with nonlinear amplitude transfer characteristic is confirmed as uniform improvements in picture quality.

  • Fluttering ghost which is the most severs picture impairment in mobile TV reception under multipath fading environments can be detected by measuring the dynamic variation of the synchronizing pulse timing. And also, the occurrence-stucture of fluttering ghost are directly correlated with the multipath parameters. This paper describes the quantitative evaluating method of the mobile TV pictures impaired by multipath parameters by means of the spectral analysis of synchronizing timing fluctuation. The ghost-flutter curve derived from the spatial amplitue spectrum of synchronizing pulse timing fluctuation express well the spatial variation characteristic, and it has been found to be the quantitative evaluating measure of picture impairment in mobile reception. A correspondence between the ghost-flutter curve (and/or index) and picture quality opinion test results is established.

  • IPTV(Internet Protocol Television) is an innovation technology to lead the new media age. Internet protocol television (IPTV) is a next generation television converged with the Internet which are delivered portal services such as information search, games, movies, home shopping and banking. Generally, service quality affects to adopt or use these technologies. Quality of experience (QoE) is more issue to be considered than service quality because of the technological restriction and limitation that IPTV is accessed by the Internet. The QoE is defined as the cognitive and experienced quality measured with users through an experiment and is conceptually related to service quality. The objective of this paper is to suggest a methodology to measure the QoE of IPTV using a user testing. We find significant factors affecting QoE of IPTV through an exploratory study and measure QoE scores. We found the nine factors of graphics, picture, accuracy, access method, quality of contents, usability, security, and performance important for QoE. The QoE scores of picture, graphics, and quality of contents gained over the average score, but the overall score for IPTV service providers was not high and the QoE needs to be improved.

  • For better picture quality in LCD TVs, it is important to reach a steady emitting state within as short a time as possible in the initial stage after the TV is turned on. The initial characteristics of LCD TVs are mainly determined by the properties of the backlight. In the present study, the photometric and spectroscopic properties of a 55-inch Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) backlights were investigated. The measured properties include time dependence of the spectrum, luminance, and color coordinates. The results show that the change in the spectroscopic properties of the LED backlight is smaller than that of the CCFL backlight. This indicates that the initial picture quality of the LCD TV with the LED backlight is superior to that with the CCFL backlight. The origins of this difference were discussed in relation to the inherent characteristics of the two light sources.

  • Motion-image-quality of LCD-TVs is discussed by dynamic spatial frequency response. Smaller temporal aperture or higher frame rate can improve dynamic response, but an increase of motion velocity easily cancels the improvement. A guideline for deciding the desirable temporal aperture and frame rate of LCD-TVs is described, under the condition that camera and display have the same parameters. Two candidates of the desirable parameter sets will be (240 or 300 Hz, 50 to 100% aperture) and (120Hz, 25 to 50% aperture), from the viewpoint of "limit of acceptance" on motion-imagequality-deterioration for critical picture materials.

  • The stereoscopic three-dimensional (3D) display provides a 3D image by inducing binocular disparity for the observers who wear special glasses. With the rapid progress in flat panel display technologies, the stereoscopic 3D display is becoming a new benefit-model of the current display industry, and several kinds of commercial stereoscopic 3D products have been released and are attracting people. Nowadays, the motion picture quality of the 3D image becomes as important as resolution or luminance since most of the commercial 3D products are 3D televisions or 3D monitors which are required to display a clear motion 3D image. In this paper, an analysis and simulation of the motion picture quality of stereoscopic 3D image is proposed, and a comparison of the motion picture performance among the current stereoscopic 3D technologies is also provided.

  • Sharp has developed industry's largest high-definition LC TV, Aquos LC-45GDI. In this paper, we discuss its 10-bit signal processing as one important enabler of its excellent picture quality. Utilizing 10 bits signal processing, in combination with full-spec High-Definition panel and "Intelligent Environment Illumination Sensor", we have succeeded to realize a beautiful gigantic LC TV.
