The purpose of the study was to investigate customer loyalty programs of diverse types of retailers. As offline retailers, department store and discount store retailers were examined, and as nonstore retailers, online store and TV home shopping retailers were investigated. Types of customer loyalty programs were analyzed based on Dowling and Uncles'(1997) loyalty program framework which included two schemes, types of reward(direct versus indirect rewards) and timing of reward(immediate versus delayed rewards). The study found that different types of retailers utilized different types of loyalty programs: Department store used all the type of rewards, discount store focused on direct/immediate rewards, online store retailers used direct/delayed rewards and/or direct/immediate rewards, and TV home shopping retailers focused on direct/delayed rewards. The study provided diverse managerial and academic implications.

The convenience of TV home shopping is known to provoke compulsive buying, which is chronic and repetitive purchasing behavior that comes about as a response to negative events or feelings. The purpose of this study was to identify whether there is a difference in the degree of compulsive buying between the purchasers of fashion goods and the purchasers of non-fashion goods on TV home shopping shows and the determinants of compulsive buying and their relative importance. Utilizing the convenient sampling method, the sample of the study was composed of women aged over 20 living in the Seoul metropolitan area. Out of 380 distributed questionnaires, 270 useful questionnaires were returned. The data were analyzed using t-test, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression. The results indicated that TV home shoppers who purchased fashion goods showed higher degree of compulsive buying than those who purchased non-fashion goods and the determinants of compulsive buying are sample's age, mean age of the sample's children, credit usage, expenditure on fashion goods, frequency of purchase of fashion goods on TV home shopping shows, and promotional tools used by TV home shopping retailers. Regarding the relative importance of the determinants, credit usage was the most influential factor followed by expenditure on fashion goods and the length of exposure to TV home shopping shows.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of situational involvement on impulse buying of clothing products in cable TV home shopping. Data were obtained from 235 women aged between 20 and 50 living in Seoul metropolitan area who have bought apparel products on impulse through cable TV. The data were analyzed using factor analysis, cluster analysis, MANOVA, and Chi-square analysis. By factor analysis, two factors of situational involvement factors were identified: Emotional Involvement and Cognitive Involvement. Based on situational involvement, consumers were classified into four groups; High Involvement, Low Involvement, Cognitive Involvement, and Emotional Involvement groups. These groups showed different decision making styles. The situational involvement groups were also different in terms of demographic characteristics, purchase behaviors, types of impulse purchase products, and responses to marketing stimuli. The findings of this study provide useful information for retails of Cable TV home shopping. Retailers may need to make useful marketing efforts for each types of situational involvement.

This study examined return policies of the Korean retailers and their differences by retail format. Return policies of 363 retailers including dept stores, discount stores, brand consignment stores, small shops, outlet stores, TV home shopping companies, and internet shopping malls were collected. Acceptance of refund or/and exchange, return grace period, and return requirements or restrictions of each retailer were analyzed. The results showed that most retail formats except small shops and internet shopping malls allowed refund. The seven day return grace period was most common though large retail chains allowed more generous time frames and small shops allowed shorter dates. Restrictions for return varied by retailers and retail formats. Generally retailers followed the guidelines of consumer protection laws. The study discussed implications of return policy analysis.
This study explored the relationship between information search and purchasing behavior across in-home shopping channels to give multi-channel retailer an implication of multichannel customer management. We analyzed the relationship between consumer's information search and purchase behavior (choice, frequency, and expenditure) with a view to channel lock-in and cross-channel synergy. This study was carried out using survey data about in-home shopping behavior of housewives. Results of the study showed that (1) there was channel lock-in between information search and purchase behavior across in-home shopping channels, (2) catalog channel and the Internet channel were a alternative channels of TV home shopping channel and (3) catalog channel and the Internet channel were an complementary channels. This results can provide meaningful implication for multi-channel retailers.
This study addresses the management performance of the retail industry in Korea. The Non-store e-commerce business, consisting of TV home shopping and online shopping, grew very fast during the 2000s. For roughly six years in the 2010s, the diversification of online shopping business models, intensifying competition, and the proliferation of competition accelerated the entry of offline shopping retailers. During the analysis period from 2001 to 2016, the performance of the Non-store e-commerce business was statistically better than that of the offline shopping retail business, department stores, general retailers, and small-sized retailers. As expected, a significant difference between performance and some of the indicators of growth and activity could be seen because of the capital and operating structure of the retail industry. In particular, the Non-store e-commerce businesses have diverse sales media and heterogeneous business models. In this study, we have presented the significance of the differences in the indicators of operating profit and inventory turnover, as well as the discussion required for managing in the future.
New retailers, especially giant retailers, so called "mart" or "discounter" which introduced around 1996, when Korea's domestic retail market was opened to the world, have brought big transitions. Consequently, new comers like discounters and CVS drove out department stores, mom & pops and traditional retailers. Literatures showed two reverse opinions for the giant retailers; rising consumers' benefit, or dropping small retailers' businesses. This study have conducted to find the situation of market concentration in retail market, and to learn the new market condition in it. According to the study, in 2005, CR3's of Korea's whole retail industry was counted 12.8%, and CR5 of that was 13.9%. CR3 of discount store business was 39%, department stores' 55%, and TV home shopping businesses' was 75%. In addition to those results, indices growing worse. So, we can say this industry already get into the oligopolistic industrial organization. Generally, under monopolistic or oligopolistic market structure, consumers' benefit may shrink and businesses' surplus profit may jump. So, it means, it's good time to turn government's policy for the retail industry in Korea to fair competition policy instead of development policy.
Ⅰ. Introduction Retailers in the 21st century are being told that future retailers are those who can execute seamless multi-channel access. The reason is that retailers should be where shoppers want them, when they want them anytime, anywhere and in multiple formats. Multi-channel access is considered one of the top 10 trends of all business in the next decade (Patricia T. Warrington, et al., 2007) And most firms use both direct and indirect channels in their markets. Given this trend, we need to evaluate a channel equity more systematically than before as this issue is expected to get more attention to consumers as well as to brand managers. Consumers are becoming very much confused concerning the choice of place where they shop for durable goods as there are at least 6-7 retail options. On the other hand, manufacturers have to deal with category killers, their dealers network, Internet shopping malls, and other avenue of distribution channels and they hope their retail channel behave like extensions of their own companies. They would like their products to be foremost in the retailer's mind-the first to be proposed and effectively communicated to potential customers. To enable this hope to come reality, they should know each channel's advantages and disadvantages from consumer perspectives. In addition, customer satisfaction is the key determinant of retail customer loyalty. However, there are only a few researches regarding the effects of shopping satisfaction and perceptions on consumers' channel choices and channels. The purpose of this study was to assess Korean consumers' channel choice and satisfaction towards channels they prefer to use in the case of electronic goods shopping. Korean electronic goods retail market is one of good example of multi-channel shopping environments. As the Korea retail market has been undergoing significant structural changes since it had opened to global retailers in 1996, new formats such as hypermarkets, Internet shopping malls and category killers have arrived for the last decade. Korean electronic goods shoppers have seven major channels : (1)category killers (2) hypermarket (3) manufacturer dealer shop (4) Internet shopping malls (5) department store (6) TV home-shopping (7) speciality shopping arcade. Korean retail sector has been modernized with amazing speed for the last decade. Overall summary of major retail channels is as follows: Hypermarket has been number 1 retailer type in sales volume from 2003 ; non-store retailing has been number 2 from 2007 ; department store is now number 3 ; small scale category killers are growing rapidly in the area of electronics and office products in particular. We try to evaluate each channel's equity using a consumer survey. The survey was done by telephone interview with 1000 housewife who lives nationwide. Sampling was done according to 2005 national census and average interview time was 10 to 15 minutes. Ⅱ. Research Summary We have found that seven major retail channels compete with each other within Korean consumers' minds in terms of price and service. Each channel seem to have its unique selling points. Department stores were perceived as the best electronic goods shopping destinations due to after service. Internet shopping malls were perceived as the convenient channel owing to price checking. Category killers and hypermarkets were more attractive in both price merits and location conveniences. On the other hand, manufacturers dealer networks were pulling customers mainly by location and after service. Category killers and hypermarkets were most beloved retail channel for Korean consumers. However category killers compete mainly with department stores and shopping arcades while hypermarkets tend to compete with Internet and TV home shopping channels. Regarding channel satisfaction, the top 3 channels were service-driven retailers: department stores (4.27); dealer shop (4.21); and Internet shopping malls (4.21). Speciality shopping arcade(3.98) were the least satisfied channels among Korean consumers. Ⅲ. Implications We try to identify the whole picture of multi-channel retail shopping environments and its implications in the context of Korean electronic goods. From manufacturers' perspectives, multi-channel may cause channel conflicts. Furthermore, inter-channel competition draws much more attention as hypermarkets and category killers have grown rapidly in recent years. At the same time, from consumers' perspectives, 'buy where' is becoming an important buying decision as it would decide the level of shopping satisfaction. We need to develop the concept of 'channel equity' to manage multi-channel distribution effectively. Firms should measure and monitor their prime channel equity in regular basis to maximize their channel potentials. Prototype channel equity positioning map has been developed as follows. We expect more studies to develop the concept of 'channel equity' in the future.
As a number of people using the internet for their shopping steadily rises, it is increasingly important for retailers to understand why consumers decide to buy products via online or offline. The main purpose of this study is to develop and test a model that enhance our understanding of how consumers respond future online and offline channels for their purchasing. Rather than merely adopting statistical models like most other studies in this field, the present study develops a model that combines double-cohort method with multinomial logit model. It is desirable if one can adopt an overall encompassing criterion in the study of consumer behaviors form diverse sales channels. This study uses the concept of cohort or aging to enable this comparison. It enables us to analyze how consumers respond to online and offline channels as people aged by measuring their shopping behavior for an online and offline retailers and their subsequent purchase intentions. Based on some empirical findings, this study concludes with policy implications and some necessary fields of future studies desirable.
Early conflict research in channel and organization area have focused on the definition of conflict construct, its cause, consequence and identified conflict resolution management. Recent studies about conflict, however, have explored new assumption of complexity, a multidimensional conflict construct, contextual conflict management strategies, positive and negative conflict/consequence, and the conflict resolution strategy. Although many literatures exists on channel conflict resolution, little research has been done about relationship learning and performance from conflict resolution perspective. This study explores how channel members can achieve a relationship learning, as a conflict resolution mechanism, which enhance co-created value in marketing channel relationship. Therefore we propose that conflict resolution strategies(collaborating behavior and avoiding behavior) influence channel performance(effectiveness and efficiency) through relationship learning processes(learning via information exchange, joint interpretation and coordination, relationship-specific knowledge memory), in view of buyer-seller relationship.
