  • The purpose of the study is to analyze the travel characteristics of freight trucks in metropolitan areas, focusing on activity generation, destination choice, and trip chaining behaviors. The results showed that the number of service companies at departure areas has a primary influence on the activity generation pattern and destination choice behavior of trucks in metropolitan areas. The number of trips within a trip chain is largest, in case where the prevailing industry in destination areas is wholesale or retail and the shipment item is food or beverage. These results imply that for the reasonable estimation of truck travel demand both the trip chaining behaviors and the industrial compositions in departure and destination areas should be separately considered for each type of commodity.

  • This study examined the elementary school teachers' present utilization of science museums in teaching-learning and their perceptions of the educational programs in science museums. The results indicate that teachers have not utilized science museums as intimately as possible with formal instruction, therefore, the students' experiences of science museums are usually limited. The main reasons for lower than optimum usage of science museums in their teaching and learning is not because of its insignificant educational effects, but because of the lack of external and administrative support mechanisms. The elementary school teachers prefer to commit to programs in science museums such as science camps or experiment activities, and those exhibitions which have some kind of clear and discernable relation to the school curriculum. The results also indicate that most teachers want to participate in the various activities of science museums, such as developing and managing the programs or pre- and post activities for museum field trips, participating in the teachers' community in science museums, and so on.

  • Ubiquitous computing and mobile technologies provide much scope for designing innovative learning experiences that can take place in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings, such as botanical gardens, parks, museums and classrooms. In this paper, we present our own innovative work for bridging indoor and outdoor field-trip learning activities with the support of RFID with reader device on ubiquitous environments. The function of our system is based on strategically located RFID tags placed on objects around settings which are identified using the mobile device installed to an RFID reader. The mobile device reads the RFID tag and sends the learner's request to the field-trip learning system. And learners can be learning activities according to theirs learning levels. We also focus on the use of intelligent agents to customize learning contents for individual learners. The result of our experiment indicates that learner enjoyed learning where mobile devices are used in the system, supporting the learning activities in the context of which they are taking place.

  • Recently, as wired and wireless communication services have rapidly developed and multimodal mobile devices which have various characteristics have widely spread, the need for new convergence services increases. The growing population of VoIP technologies and the high communication expense yield that the market of IP based telephony such as WiFi phone and IP phone is substituted for one of the conventional PSTN telephony. With the help of this trend, the wireline network operators desire to find a market in mobile networks. Therefore, they focus on Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) service as one of the key factors to accomplish this goal. FMC services are able to provide the mobility of voice services between circuit switched and packet switched networks. IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) based Voice Call Continuity (VCC) is one of the schemes to embody FMC services. As Application Server (AS) which has this VCC function provides seamless handover of services between heterogeneous networks, FMC subscribers can communicate seamlessly with others m WiFi domain and COMA domain using WiFi-COMA dual phone. Most of enterprises have already introduced IP network infrastructure and IP-PBX (Private Branch eXchange) for telephony. However, the problems of high communication cost and work inefficiency due to frequent outside jobs or business trips have remained. In order to solve these problems, demands for enterprise FMC services increase. In this paper, we introduce a new IP-PBX based VCC model that can provide seamless handover of voice services between WiFi and COMA networks for enterprise users and we investigate some interworking and security issues between Soft Switch (SSW) and IMS, or between IMSs. In addition, we introduce a new service that can provide the continuity of voice sessions as well as video sessions using Multimedia Session Continuity (MMSC) technology which has evolved from VCC. This service is expected to be one of the next-generation personalized services based on user's context.

  • This Study estimates the actual night traffic using the smart card data used by most of the public transportation users, and compares it with the current night bus routes by KT Telecom based on the night time call volume. In order to compare the current night bus and night trips evaluated by smart card data, we presented indicators related to the degree of matching, and estimated the volume of service currently provided. The unique approach of the study is that we chose subway station instead of bus stop for the unit of the study. Bus stops has their complexity in a way that stops with same name could belong to different administrative area depending on its direction. For this reason, we decided to use subway station and defined its adjacent administrative district as the scope of influence. Since night bus is the primary means of transportation during the late night, it is anticipated that they will be able to provide better service by calculating the actual traffic and selecting the routes.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate vertical moving facilities at subway stations for the elderly users and to analyze their improvement measures. To evaluate vertical moving facilities of the top 31 subway stations with the most trips in Seoul, a data envelopment analysis (DEA) is employed. The input variables for the DEA include the number and percentage of elderly users, which are calculated using smart card data. the output variables consist of the number of elevators and escalators per 100 steps. The results show that the average score of 31 subway stations is 0.62 and four stations, i.e., Jamsil, Gasan Complex, Konkuk University, and Dongmyo, have the highest score. These four subway stations are set as benchmarking groups for the other stations with the lower score. Based on the comparison with the benchmarking groups, the improvement measures for vertical moving facilities of each station are suggested and discussed.

  • In this study, the spatio-temporal patterns of salty wind by typhoon in Jeju Island and their damages to windbreak forests are examined. To investigate these patterns, field trips as well as analyses of meteorological data were conducted after the attack of typhoon BOLAVEN in late August, 2012. Collected data show that salty wind damage in windbreak trees by the typhoon was distinct in the southern and eastern coastal areas due to the southeasterly gusts with less precipitation. Most of trees including Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) within 8km from the coast as well as pine trees (Pinus thunbergii) along the coasts were damaged by salty water driven by the typhoon, but the magnitude of its damages and recovery rates of damaged vegetation varied by species. These results indicate that prediction and proactive activities for salty wind are needed to reduce its damages to local vegetation particularly before the arrival of a dry typhoon accompanying gusty wind.

  • It is very important to manage the position of the blocks in the shipyard where the work is completed, or the blocks need to be moved for the next process operation. The moving distance of the block increases according to the position of the block stockyard. As the travel distance increases, the number of trips and travel distance of the transporter increases, which causes a great deal of operation cost. Currently, the selection of the block position in the shipyard is based on the know-how of picking up a transporter worker by the production schedule of the block, and the location where the block is to be placed is determined according to the situation in the stockyard. The know-how to select the position of the block is the result of optimizing the position of the block in the shipyard for a long time. In this study, we used the accumulated data as a result of the operation of the yard in the shipyard and tried to select the location of blocks by learning it. Decision tree learning algorithm was used for learning, and a prototype was developed using it. Finally, we prove the possibility of selecting a block stockyard through this algorithm.
