Gemmological Characterization of Precious Serpentine from Booyo, Korea (부여산 귀사문석의 보석학적 특성 연구)

  • The precious serpentine, referring to a rare and highly valuable gem variety of serpentine group minerals, is found to occur in serpentinite from Booyo Gren Jade Mine which is located in Oesan-myun, Booyo-gun of Chungchungnam-do. Geommological properties of the precious serpentine have been investigated by use of polarizing microscope, specific gravity balance, refractometer, hardness pencils, X-ray diffractometer, XRF, ICP-MS analyser, and infrared absorption spectroscope.The precious serpentine from Booyo is colored deep green with oily luster and semi-transparent. It is highly tough and Mohs's scale of hardness is measured to be 5-6. Specific gravity is determined to be 2.67, and a single refractive index ND=1.56 is observed by a spot method, using sodium light source. X-ray powder diffraction data is represented by the reflection lines at 7.40(100), 4.64(25), 3.68(68), 2.757(69), 2.530(49), 2.549(32), and 1.710(21${\AA}$), which compares very well with that of antigorite of serpentine group minerals. The major chemical compositions of the precious serpentine group minerals. The major chemical compositions of the precious serpentine are SiO2 42.49%, MgO 39.08%, Fe2O3 3.85%, and H2O 11.87%. Besides, trace elements such as Cr(2188), Ni(1110ppm), Co(58ppm), and Ta (108ppm) are relatively spectrum shows peaks at 3670, 1190, 1070, 980 and 610cm-1. Strong absorption at 3670cm-1 is due to OH stretching, and 1190, 1070 and 980cm-1 due to SiO stretching. The absorption 610cm-1 is formed by alteration of pre-existing ultramafic rock, namely peridotite, with an introduction of fluid with very little content of CO2, under 400$^{\circ}C$ environment. Magnetite inclusions, finely disseminated in the precious serpentine, may be a result of Fe precipitation, during serpentinization of olivine-bearing country rock.

Occurrence of the Collar Rot of Water Cress (Oenanthe javanicav) Caused by Sclerotium rolfsii (Sclerotium rolfsii에 의한 미나리 흰비단병 발생)

  • A destructive collar rot of water cress (Oenanthe javanicav) occurred in the commerical farm at Karye-myon, Uiryong-gun, Kyongsangnam-do in 2000. The causal fungus caused stem rot, crown rot, wilt or blight of water cress and the disease incidence in 3 fields ranged from 28.6 to 42.8%. White mycelia spread over tissues near the soil surface or stems, and sclerotia developed on the lesions at late season. The fungus grew well on PDA at $20^{\circ}C$ and the typical clamp connection was formed on its tough white mycelia $4.1{\sim}10.3{\mu}m$. The fungus also formed white mycelia mats and sclerotia at $20^{\circ}C$ on PDA. The sclerotia were globoid and sized $1.0{\sim}6.3{\times}1.0{\sim}5.2mm$ (av. $2.4{\sim}2.2mm$). The causal fungus of collar rot disease was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii on the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity test, This is the first report on the collar rot of water cress caused by Sclerotium rolfsii in Korea.

An Analysis on Factors Related to the Job Satisfaction of Dental Hygienists at J Region (J지역 치과위생사의 직무스트레스 요인 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the job stress and job stressors of dental hygienists. The subjects in the study were 220 dental hygienists who worked in north Jeolla province. After a mail survey was conducted from July 24 through September 24, 2006, the responses from 180 dental hygienists(response rate 81.8%) were gathered, and 156 answer sheets were analyzed except 24 incomplete ones that couldn't be analyzable. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. As for the correlation of overall job stress to turnover intention, their entire stress was under the influence of unreasonable treatment (r = 0.382), conflicts as a professional(r = 0.285), tough working environments(r = 0.303), conflicts with colleagues(r = 0.233), and heavy workload (r = 0.262). Those who were more stressed were more willing to change their occupation, and their stress level made a statistically significant difference to that(p < 0.01). 2. A multiple regression analysis was carried out by selecting the job stressors and turnover intention as independent and dependent variables respectively to see how each of the stressors affected job stress. And unreasonable treatment(p < 0.001) was identified as what had the biggest impact on that, followed by conflicts as a professional(p < 0.05), and tough working environments (p < 0.05). The stressors made a 22.2% prediction of turnover intention.

  • Microstructural examination of the Nb-Si-B alloys at Nb-rich compositions is performed. The Nb-rich corner of the Nb-Si-B system is favorable in that the constituent phases are Nb (ductile and tough phase with high melting temperature) and $T_2$ phase (very hard intermetallic compound with favorable oxidation resistance) which are good combination for high temperature structural materials. The samples containing compositions near Nb-rich corner of the Nb-Si-B ternary system are prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) process using $T_2$ and Nb powders. $T_2$ bulk phase is made in arc furnace by melting the Nb slug and the Si-B powder compact. The $T_2$ bulk phase was subsequently ball-milled to powders. SPS is performed at $1300^{\circ}C$ and $1400^{\circ}C$, depending on the composition, under 30 MPa for 600s, to produce disc-shaped specimen with 15 mm in diameter and 3 mm high. Hardness tests (Rockwell A-scale and micro Vickers) are carried out to estimate the mechanical property.

  • According to previous paper, the hardness of semi-solid as ointments and suppositories causes the tough or skin, the pain and connected with absorption, the state of spread or the efficiency of drug. When the hardening agent or the softening agent is added to ointment whid, is registered on the pharmacopeia of the republic of Korea, the experimertal data by apparent logarithmic hardness are shown is Table 1. The results are as the folloring. 1) In case of the softening agent which is added to ointment base, each has shown two different equation with differnented slope as $K_1$ and $K_2$ value determined (Fig. 1,2). 2) When the hardening agent is added to same ointment base, these studies indicated that there is a direct correlation between $K_1$ and $K_2$. However, in case of softening agent $K_1$ and $K_1$ are not correlated as indicated in Fig. $3{\sim}8$. 3) On condition of same ointment base, the critical poit is proportional to $K_1$ 4) The second effect is at least $3{\sim}17$ times more. sensitive than the first effect or in average 8.3 times more sensitive, Therefore, the results presented in this paper. Suggest that, when the drug is added to a certain ointment base, it should be added within this first effect before the critical point is reached.

Effects of Blanching, Chemical Dipping, Freezing Methods and Storage Period on Quality of Frozen Mushrooms (Blanching, Chemical Dipping, 냉동방법 및 저장기간이 냉동 양송이의 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of blanching time, chemical dipping, freezing method and storage period on texture, color and yield of frozen whole and sliced mushrooms were investigated, and the results are summarized as follows; Frozen whole mushrooms blanched for 5min. had markedly tougher texture than mushrooms blanched for 1 or 2 minutes. As the storage time of frozen mushrooms increased from 3 to 6 months, shear press values increased very significantly. The texture of Freon frozen and plate frozen mushrooms was similar after 3 months storage. Blanching time did not affect texture of frozen sliced mushrooms significantly, but storage time did. The results of sensory evaluation for texture were in good agreement with shear press values. Chemical dipping methods were effective in maintaining desirable color of frozen whole and sliced mushrooms stored for 3 months. The yield of frozen whole mushrooms was significantly increased by shortening blanching time in combination with chemical dipping. Sliced mushrooms required at least 2 min. blanching, to avoid excessive breakage in mechanical slicing operation, for better yield.

  • Bis(2-methoxyethyl)itaconate (bis(ME)I) was prepared for a new gel electrolyte containing double comb-like itaconate unit by esterification reaction of 2-methoxyethanol with itaconic acid. The copolymers were composed of AN/bis(ME)I = 9/1 ~ 1/1. The optimum mechanical properties and conductivity were obtained from the composition of AN/bis(ME)I = 5/1 and 6/1(25 ~ 35 wt%), LiClO4$_4$(15 wt%) and plasticizer (EC/PC = 1/1) (40 ~ 50 wt%). They showed a tough film and maintained a mechanical stability as a free standing film. The plasticized polymer gel electrolytes obtained from them showed ion conductivity of 8.12 ${\times}$ 10$_{-4}$ ~ 1.87 ${\times}$ 10$_{-3}$ S/cm. The maximum conductivity value obtained from our study was one order of magnitude higher than that of other PEO-based polymer electrolyte at ambient temperature.

Effects of Doneness on the Microbial, Nutritional, and Quality Properties of Pork Steak of Different Thicknesses

  • This study aimed to evaluate the effect of doneness on the microbial, nutritional, and quality characteristics of 1.5 cm- and 2.0 cm-thick pork neck steaks. Pork neck meat was obtained within 24 h after slaughtering, cut into 1.5 cm- and 2.0 cm-thick slices (n=5), packed in LLD-PE wrap, and stored at $4{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for 7-10 days until aerobic plate counts (APC) reach 5.51-6.50 Log CFU/g. Then, the pork meat was cooked on a frying pan till it was medium-rare, medium, or well-done. The microbial inhibition rates of the 1.5 cm- and 2.0 cm-thick steak in medium-rare state were 58.26% and 51.70%, respectively, whereas it was 100% for medium-done pork steak of either thickness. The total calories of the 1.5 cm- and 2.0 cm-thick well-done pork steaks were 643.61 kcal/100 g and 675.00 kcal/100 g, respectively, which was higher than that in medium-rare and medium-done steaks. The retention ratios for Fe and K in the well-done steak were significantly lower than those in the medium and medium-rare steak of either thickness (p<0.05). The shear force of the medium-rare and medium steak did not differ, whereas that of the well-done steak was significantly higher than that of the medium-rare steak of either thickness (p<0.05). We observed that the well-done pork steak had tough texture, low mineral content, and high calories. Therefore, consumption of medium and medium-rare pork is more beneficial than that of well-done pork.

The Effects of Reducing Skin Wrinkles and Improving Skin Elasticity from Korean Radish Extract

  • The radish skin and radish greens are an edible part of the radish. But they are removed before eating the radish and used as a byproduct or an animal feed material because of their tough and rough texture. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of supercritical heat-treated radish-extract on UV-induced HRM-2 wrinkled mouse animal model on anti-aging wrinkles. Supercritical heat-treated radish-extract was applied on the back of seven-weeks old HRM-2 mice. The effect of HRE on skin thickness, elasticity and wrinkle formation of the mice was observed by using UVB lamp to induce melanogenesis and wrinkle formation. As the result, increased depth of wrinkles was observed in the negative control group in comparison to the normal group. In contrast, decreased depth of wrinkles was observed in the radish-extract-free group compared to the negative control group. In the study of the effect of radish-extract on wrinkle-formation related gene expression and protein what protein expression, MMP-2 and MMP-9 gene expression significantly increased in the negative control group compared to the normal group. The gene expression reduced in dependence to the mass of radish-extract treated. Similar to quantitative results of mRNA expression, the expression of MMP-2 protein increased as a result of UVB-irradiation. The MMP-2 expression was inhibited in dependence to the mass of radish-extract treated. In conclusion, the supercritical heat-treated radish-extract has an effect on improving skin wrinkles not only when it is applied to the skin but also when orally ingested. Thus, it can be effectively used as a composition to health functional products. Therefore we can also conclude that radish a food that does not show any side-effects even upon long-term intake can reduce wrinkle formation as well as improve skin elasticity when taken regularly for a long period.

Trends of Deaths and Missings Caused by Natural and Sediment Disasters in Korea (자연재해와 산지토사재해에 의한 희생자 수의 변화경향)

  • The study on long-term change of natural and sediment disasters such as landslides and debris flows is not thoroughgoing enough in spite of increasing of concern for disaster. Therefore, the change of natural and sediment disasters was investigated with the number of victims caused by both disasters and the ratio of sediment disasters for natural disasters was compared. The number of victims by sediment and natural disasters has apparently been decreasing despite of the change of rainfall pattern. The number of victims was changed to 140 persons/year in the late 1990s from 250 persons/year in the 1970s of natural disaster and that of sediment disaster to 20 persons/year in the late 1990s from 60 persons/year in the late 1970s. Furthermore, the ratio of sediment disaster victims to natural disaster victims has decreased from 2/7 in the 1970s to 2/15 after 1980s. But, the system of sediment disaster management and new soil erosion control works tough introduction of watershed management concept are requested because of increased landslide area in recent years (206ha in 1981 $\rightarrow$ 688ha in 1999).
