Coagulation is very important process in water works. The subsequent processes are directly affected by this process. Many factors such as turbidity, alkalinity, pH, hardness, total organic carbon(TOC), velocity gradient and flocculation time effect on coagulation process. Among these factors, specially TOC is being concerned target substance to be removed due to trihalomenthanes(THMs) precursor and alkalinity is being one of the major parameter for removing TOC. We have researched the consumption of coagulant with TOC alkalinity concentration of water and removal efficiency of residual TOC and turbidity with alkalinity. Furthermore we have investigated particle size distributions with velocity gradient and alkalinity. The consumption of coagulant was proportionally increased to TOC and alkalinity concentration and the removal of TOC in Nakdong river water was very difficult more than 150 mg/l in alkalinity but large morecular weight organic such as humic acid could be removed easily. Coagulation of low alkalinity water was more rapidly occured than of high alkalinity water by analyzing the particle size distributions. High alkalinity water needed higher mixing energy for a good coagulation within limited flocculation time.

Effects of operating parameters such as activated carbon dose, gaseous $O_3$ concentration and pH on the properties of methylene blue(MB) degradation in a catalytic ozonation were investigated through a series of batch experiments. Activated carbon catalyzed the self-decomposition of ozone, generating $OH{\cdot}$, thus promoting MB degradation. Thus the increase of activated carbon dose enhanced the MB and TOC removal. The higher gaseous ozone concentration injected, the promoted MB and TOC removal obtained through the enhanced mass transfer. The MB removal was not significantly affected by the variation of aqueous pH. Catalytic ozonation can be considered as an efficient alternative in treating refractory pollutants in textile wastewater with faster and higher dye and TOC removal compared with ozonation and adsorption.
The removal efficiency of organic compounds and the toxicity evaluation of microorganism have been studied in dye wastewater treatment using $UV/TiO_2$ and $UV/H_2O_2$ photooxidation system. Sample waters tested in this work were raw dye wastewater and dye wastewater treated in $UV/TiO_2$ and $UV/H_2O_2$ photooxidation system respectively. Total organic carbon(TOC) removal rate was 50% in $UV/TiO_2$ process and 80% in $UV/H_2O_2$ process. It has been investigated with colony counting agar method and paper disk method whether the type of treatment process has affected the microorganism growth. In the raw wastewater, more than four types of microorganisms have survived. But, little of microorganisms were alive at TOC removal rate of 50% in $UV/TiO_2$ system. In contrast to that, two types of microorganisms were found at TOC removal rate of 80% in $UV/H_2O_2$ system.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in retention and wear pattern of Locator® and ADD-TOC attachments on a digital milled bar by performing chewing simulation and repeated insertion/removal of prostheses in fully edentulous models. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Locator (Locator®; Zest Anchors Inc., Escondido, CA, USA) was selected as the control group and ADD-TOC (ADD-TOC; PNUAdd Co., Ltd., Busan, Republic of Korea) as the experimental group. A CAD-CAM milled bar was mounted on a master model and 3 threaded holes for connecting a bar attachment was formed using a tap. Locator and ADD-TOC attachments were then attached to the milled bar. Simulated mastication and repeated insertion/removal were performed over 400,000 cyclic loadings and 1,080 insertions/removals, respectively. Wear patterns on deformed attachment were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS. For the ADD-TOC attachments, chewing simulation and repeated insertion/removal resulted in a mean initial retentive force of 24.43 ± 4.89 N, which were significantly lower than that of the Locator attachment, 34.33 ± 8.25 N (P < .05). Amounts of retention loss relative to baseline for the Locator and ADD-TOC attachments were 21.74 ± 7.07 and 8.98 ± 5.76 N (P < .05). CONCLUSION. CAD-CAM milled bar with the ADD-TOC attachment had a lower initial retentive force than the Locator attachment. However, the ADD-TOC attachment might be suitable for long-term use as it showed less deformation and had a higher retentive force after simulated mastication and insertion/removal repetitions.
Fenton’s oxidation process is one of the most commonly applied processes to the wastewater which cannot be treated by conventional biological treatment processes. However, it is necessary to minimize the cost of Fenton’s oxidation treatment by modifying the treatment processes or other means of chemical treatment. So, as a method for the chemical oxidation of biorefractory or nonbiodegradable organic pollutants, the Photo-Fenton-Reaction which utilizes iron(11)salt. $H_2O$$_2$ and UV-light simultaneously has been proprosed. Therfore, the purpose of this study is to test a removal efficiency of dye-wastewater and treatment cost with Fenton’s and Photo-Fenton’s oxidation process. The Fe(11)/$H_2O$$_2$ reagent is referred to as the fenton’s reagent. which produces hydroxy radicals by the interaction of Fe(11) with $H_2O$$_2$. In this exoeriment, the main results are as followed; 1. The Fenton oxidation was most efficient in the pH range of 3-5. The optimal condition for initial reaction pH was 3.5 for the high CO $D_{Cr}$ & TOC-removal efficiency. 2. The removal efficiency of TOC and CO $D_{Cr}$ increased up to the molar ration between ferrate and hydrogen peroxide 0.2:1, but above that ratio removal efficiency hardly increased. 3. The highest removal efficiency of TOC and CO $D_{Cr}$ were showed when the mole ration of ferrate to hydrogen peroxide was 0.2:3.4. 4. Without pretreatment process, photo-fenton oxidation which was not absorbed UV light was not different to fenton oxidation. 5. And Fenton oxidtion with pretreatment process was similar to Fenton oxidation in the absence of coagulation, the proper dosage of F $e^{2+}$: $H_2O$$_2$ was 0.2:1 for the optimal removal efficiency of TOC or CO $D_{Cr}$ .6. Also, TOC & CO $D_{Cr}$ removal efficiency in the photo-fenton oxidation with pretreatment was increased when UV light intensity enhanced.7. Optimum light intensity in the range from 0 to 1200 W/$m^2$ showed that UV-intensity with 1200W/$m^2$ was the optimum condition, when F $e_{2+}$:$H_2O$$_2$ ratio for the highest decomposition was 0.2:2.5.EX>$_2$ ratio for the highest decomposition was 0.2:2.5.
Biological nutrient removal(BNR) from wastewater was performed by adopting various process configurations. The simultaneous biological organics, phosphorus and nitrogen removal of synthetic wastewater was investigated in a sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR). The other reactor was operating as a reference, without biofilm being added. The cycling time in SBR and SBBR was adjusted at 12 hours and then certainly included anaerobic and aerobic conditions. Both systems has been operated with a stable total organic carbon(TOC), nitrogen and phosphorus removal performance for over 90 days. Average removal efficiencies of TOC and total nitrogen were 83% and 95%, respectively. The nitrification rate in SBR was higher than that in SBBR. On the contrary, the denitrification rate in SBBR was higher than that in SBR. The phosphorus release was occurred in SBBR, however, not in SBR because of the inhibition effect of NO$_3$$^{[-10]}$ .
The Disinfectants/Disinfection By-products (D/DBP) Rule proposed by the US Environmental Protection Agency requires the implementation of enhanced coagulation as a control strategy for natural organic matter (NOM) removal and as a means of limiting the formation of all DBPs, i.e., not just the trihalomethanes and haloacetica acids. To control DBP formation, several best available technologies (BATs) were determined for removal of DBPs and DBP precursors. The enhanced coagulation is one of the BATs for DBP precursors removal. Treatment facilities that achieve a specified percent removal of total organic carbon (TOC) prior to the application of a continuous disinfectant or that achieve a residual TOC concentration < 2mg/L prior to the application of a continuous disinfectant are considered to be in compliance with enhanced coagulation. The enhanced coagulation was applied to raw water in Korea, the Han River. Raw water were examined and effects of different raw water qualities on enhanced coagulation were investigated. Three analyses were used for raw water characteristics, water quality measurement, molecular weight distributions, hydrophobic/hydrophilic fractionation. The Han River had the relatively low alkalinity and low organic carbon concentration. The results of molecular weight distributions showed significant portions of low molecular weight organics, which is very different from most water in USA. The alum doses for the required TOC removal guided from USEPA manual were quite low (i.e. 10~30 mg/L alum) for the water, probably due to the specific water quality of the Han River.
This paper reports on a pilot scale comparison of PACS coagulation with and without pH preadjustment. The pH of the water was adjusted with carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid. Process performance was assessed on the basis of total organic carbon(TOC), UV absorbance, turbidity and disinfection by-product(DBP) precursors. Coagulation pH appeared to be a determining factor for maximum NOM removal. The optimum coagulation pH in order to decrease TOC and turbidity were pH 7. Preadjustment of pH 7 increased TOC removal to as much as 43, 47 percent with sulfuric acid and carbon dioxide. Moreover, coagulation at pH 7 caused a reduction in UV$_{254}$, THMFP and HAAFP compared to the baseline coagulation. For preadjustment of pH 7 with carbon dioxide, the percentage of TOC, UV$_{254}$, THMFP and HAAFP shows the reduction rate of 3.8, 0.5, 4.8, 9.4% comparing to the coagulation rendition using sulfuric acid. Acid addition to depress pH during coagulation decrease Langelier Saturation Index(LSI), potentially causing increase corrosion in water distribution systems. LSI for carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid at pH 6 was -2.3, -3.3. Therefore, carbon dioxide was more effective at controlling corrosion than sulfuric acid.
In order to remove the pollutants effectively in the dye wastewater by chemical precipitation process, coagulation arid flocculation test were carried out using several coagulants on various reaction conditions. It was found that the Ferrous sulfate was the most effective coagulant for the removal of disperse dye(B79), and we could get the best result lot the removal of disperse dye(B56) in the aspects of TOC removal efficiency and sludge field. When the Ferrous sulfate dosage was $800mg/\ell$, the sludge settling velocity was very fast>, and the color was effectively removed in the disperse dye(B79) solution. Although the color removal was ineffective when the Alum was used as a coagulant, the sludge field was decreased in comparison with the Ferrous sulfate or the Ferric sulfate was used in the disperse dye(B56) solution. The general color removal effect for the disperse dye(B56 and B79) solutions, the Ferric sulfate was more proper coagulant than the Alum. It was showed that TOC removal was improved 5% and over by the addition of Calcium hydroxide, and $30mg/\ell$ of sludge yield was decreased(B79). When Alum or Ferric sulfate was used as a coagulant, pH condition for most effective color removal was 5 in B56 solution. In case of Ferrous sulfate as a coagulant, most effective pH condition for color removal was 9. When Ferric sulfate or Ferrous sulfate was used as a coagulant, pH condition for most effective color removal was 9 in B79 solution.
