  • We investigated the electro-optic characteristics of a fringe-field driven twisted nematic (TN) display using a LC with negative dielectric anisotropy depending on electrode structures. The fringe-field driven TN mode known to exhibit wide viewing angle and excellent color characteristics over a wide viewing range and high transmittance. However, when the electrode width and distance between them is large enough, the transmittance is lower than the conventional vertical field-driven TN mode. By narrowing the electrode width and distance, the transmittance reaches the same value of the conventional TN mode.

  • We modeled the dynamic switching behavior of a bistable twisted-nematic liquid crystal cell by employing the Berreman's backflow model. Although viscosity paramenters of the liquid crystal material are not known, numerically calculated optical switching characteristics shows good agreement with experimental results. With this model we also have shown that bistable switching can be observed in a $180^{\circ}$ twisted cell only when two alignment layers are rubbed in the opposite direction.

  • Ultra-small optical anisotropy of a rubbed polyimide (PI) alignment layer is quantitatively characterized using the improved reflection ellipsometer. Twisted nematic (TN) cells are fabricated using the rubbed PIs of known surface anisotropy as alignment layers. Distribution of liquid crystal (LC) molecules in the TN cell is characterized using transmission ellipsometry. The retardation of the rubbed PI surface increases as rubbing strength increases. The tilt angle of the optic axis of the rubbed PI surface decreases as rubbing strength especially as the angular speed of the rubbing roller increases. Pretilt angle of LC molecules in the TN cell shows strong correlation with tilt angle of the optic axis of the rubbed PI surface. Both the apparent order parameter and the effective twist angle of the LC molecules in the TN cell decrease as the pretilt angle of LC molecules increases.

  • The objectives of this study were to analyze the longitudinal gradient and temporal variations of water quality in Daecheong Reservoir in relation to the major inflowing streams from the watershed, during 2001~2010. For the study, we selected 7 main-stream sites of the reservoir along the main axis of the reservoir, from the headwater to the dam and 8 tributary streams. In-reservoir nutrients of TN and TP showed longitudinal declines from the headwater to the dam, which results in a distinct zonation of the riverine ($R_z$, M1~M3), transition ($T_z$, M4~M6), and lacustrine zone ($L_z$, M7) in water quality, as shown in other foreign reservoirs. Chlorophyll-a (CHL) and BOD as an indicator of organic matter, were maximum in the $T_z$. Concentration of total phosphorus (TP) was the highest (8.52 $mg\;L^{-1}$) on March in the $R_z$, and was the highest (165 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) in the $L_z$ on July. Values of TN was the maximum (377 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) on August in the $R_z$, and was the highest (3.76 $mg\;L^{-1}$) in the $L_z$ on August. Ionic dilution was evident during September~October, after the monsoon rain. The mean ratios of TN : TP, as an indicator of limiting factor, were 88, which indicates that nitrogen is a surplus for phytoplankton growth in this system. Nutrient analysis of inflowing streams showed that major nutrient sources were headwater streams of T1~T2 and Ockcheon-Stream of T5, and the most influential inflowing stream to the reservoir was T5, which is located in the mid-reservoir, and is directly influenced by the waste-water treatment plants. The key parameters, influenced by the monsoon rain, were TP and suspended solids (SS). Empirical models of trophic variables indicated that variations of CHL in the $R_z$ ($R^2$=0.044, p=0.264) and $T_z$ ($R^2$=0.126, p=0.054) were not accounted by TN, but were significant (p=0.032) in the $L_z$. The variation of the log-transformed $I_r$-CHL was not accounted ($R^2$=0.258, p=0.110) by $I_w$-TN of inflowing streams, but was determined ($R^2$=0.567, p=0.005) by $I_w$-TP of inflowing streams. In other words, TP inputs from the inflowing streams were the major determinants on the in-reservoir phytoplankton growth. Regression analysis of TN : TP suggested that the ratio was determined by P, rather than N. Overall, our data suggest that TP and suspended solids, during the summer flood period, should be reduced from the eutrophication control and P-input from Ockcheon-Stream should be controlled for water quality improvement.

  • Removal rate of $NO_3-N$ and TN in a free water surface wetland system with litter layer on its bottom was compared with that without one. The system was established on floodplain in the down reach of the Gwangju Stream in 2001. Its dimensions were 31 meters in length and 12 meters in width. Water of the stream was funneled into it and its effluent was discharged back into the channel. Average litter layer of 9.6 cm was formed on its bottom in 2007. The layer and above-ground parts of reeds and cattails on the system were eliminated in Spring 2008. Volumes and water quality of inflow and outflow of the system were analyzed from May to November in 2007 and 2008, respectively. Inflow into the system both in 2007 and 2008 averaged approximately $40m^3/day$ and hydraulic residence time both in 2007 and 2008 was about 1.5 days. Average influent $NO_3-N$ concentration in 2007 and 2008 was 2.16 and 2.05 mg/L, respectively and influent TN concentration in 2007 and 2008 averaged 3.98 and 3.89 mg/L, respectively. With a 0.05 significance level, effluent temperatures, influent concentrations of $NO_3-N$ and TN, and stem numbers per square meter and height of the emergent plants showed no difference between the system with litter layer and without one. $NO_3-N$ removal in the system with litter layer and without it averaged 55.59 and 46.06%, respectively and TN retention averaged 57.24 and 48.97%, respectively. Both $NO_3-N$ and TN abatement rates in the system with litter layer were significantly high (p < 0.001) when compared with those without one. The wetland system having litter layer on its bottom was more efficient for $NO_3-N$ and TN retention than that without one.

  • The impact of urbanization on LST (Land Surface Temperature) and TN (Tropical Night) was observed with the analyses of land cover change and LST by associating with the frequency of TN during the period of 1996 to 2016. The analyses of land cover and LST was based on the images of Landast 5 and 8 for September in 1996, 2006, and 2016 at a 10 year interval. The hourly-collected atmospheric temperatures for the months of July and August during the period were collected from AWSs (Automatic Weather Stations) in Seoul for the frequency analysis of TN. The study area was categorized into five land cover classes: urban or built-up area, forest, mixed vegetation, bare soil and water. It was found that vegetation (-7.71%) and bare soil (-9.04%) decreased during the period while built-up (17.29%) area was expanded throughout the whole period (1996-2016), indicating gradual urbanization. The changes came along with the LST rise in the urban area of built-up and bare soil in Seoul. In addition, the frequency of TN has increased in 4.108% and 7.03% for July and August respectively between the two periods of the 10 year interval, 1996-2006 and 2006-2016. By comparing the increasing trends of land cover, LST, and TN, we found a high probability that the frequency of TN had a relationship with land cover changes by the urbanization process in the study area.

  • Fifty-one Thai Native (TN) and Anglo-Nubian (AN) $\times$ TN does were studied. The purpose of the study was to investigate the reproductive performances of different goat genotypes grazing improved pasture with or without supplementary feeding. The feeding regimes were: 1. no concentrate supplement (T1), 2. supplemented for 15 days before mating and 45 days during mating period (T2), 3. supplemented from 15 days before mating to 42 days after kidding (T3) and 4. supplemented for 30 days before kidding, followed by 42 days after kidding. Cross-bred does tended to have higher conception rates, kidding opportunities and higher multiple birth rates than TN does. However, these differences were not statistically significant (p>0.05), and concentrate supplementation under the various regimes did not increase reproductive performance. TN kids had significantly (p<0.01) lower birth weights and lower weights at 3, 6 and 12 weeks of age than those of the cross-bred kids. However, there was no significant difference between the genotypes in growth rate (g/d or $g/kg^{75}/d$) of kids during these periods. Supplementary feeding did not significantly affect either kid birth weight or weight gain in the first 6 weeks after birth and during this period supplementary adequate in both quantity and quality, substantial reproductive performances were achieved from both TN and AN $\times$ TN does without concentrate supplementation.

  • This paper presents results from a study of the body composition and sensory characteristics of female weaner goat meat. A completely randomized $3{\times}3{\times}2$ factorial design was used. Factors were genotype (Thai native; TN, 75% TN $\times$ 25% Anglo-Nubian; AN and 50% TN $\times$ 50% AN), feeding {grazing only, low (1.0% BW/d) and high (1.5% BW/d) concentrate supplementation and parasite control (undrenched and drenched)}. It was shown that there was no effect of genotype on body components and dressing percentage. However, TN and 75% TN $\times$ 25% AN kids had significantly (p<0.05) higher muscle to bone ratios (4.20% and 4.20%, respectively) compared with 50% TN $\times$ 50% AN kids (3.88%). Kids on grazing only had significantly (p<0.01) higher muscle percentage (64.12%) than did kids in low (61.30%) and high (60.62%) supplementary feeding program, but there was no significant (p>0.05) difference between low and high supplementary feeding groups. Kids offered supplementary feeding had significantly (p<0.01) higher percentages of total fat, intermuscular fat, pelvic fat and kidney fat than those of grazing only. Kids offered supplementary feeding had significantly (p<0.05) higher muscle to bone ratios and significantly (p<0.01) higher muscle plus fat to bone ratios compared with those of grazing only. This may be due to significantly lower (p<0.01) bone contents (14.95, 14.17 and 16.8% for kids offered low and high supplementary feeding and grazing only, respectively. There was no significant difference in sensory characteristics of goat meat between genotypes or feeding groups.

  • Flowering dates of 389 plant species in the Hongneung Arboretum, Seoul, had been recorded from 1968 through 1975. The thermal analysis on the air temperature as the key factor determining the first flowering date, with climatological data obtained in the Arboretum, were undertaken by Nuttonson's Index (1948) and Lindsey & Newman's Index (1956). The results and conclusion in this study are as follow; Peak in the bell shape distribution curve of the species and first flowering dates, largely, was early May. Flower spans of most species were 10 to 20 days, neverthless, some species flower only a few days while others may stay flowering a hundred days even more. Increase-curves of summation temperature from early spring through late-summer showed almost the same mode in both Nuttonson;s Index (Tn) and Lindsey & Newman's Index (T1). These Indices manifested the exponential curve, increasing slowly at the beginning of spring chiefly but rapidly from the middle part of April. The equation of the linear relationahip between Tn and Tl as far as in thisstudy is as follow. Tl=230Tn It appears that the distribution of summation temperature, below Tn=400°C·day, affects the first flowering, even though it could be modified somehow by the distribution of precipitation, day length and others. Nuttonson's Index (Tn.f) and Lindsey & Newman's Index (Tl.f) upon the thermal amount first flowering dates have been respectively simulated as follow. Tn.f=θa + C Tl.f=230θa + 230C where θ is air temperature 10°C, a and C are a constant.
