Harmonic Analysis on the Korean AC Railway System

  • Line constants of the catenary system are estimated. The harmonic current that the Korean Train Express (KTX) injects into the catenary is measured to precisely analyze the harmonic effects. The Korean high-speed railway system is modeled by estimated and measured results. The system model is applied for predicting the harmonic effects. The simulation results from the system model are compared to field test data concerning the total harmonic distortion (THD). The reliability of the system model is verified.

  • Recently, power conversion equipment increased rapidly makes a lot of harmonics. Thus, it is growing that wrong operation and break down of sensitive devices. There are two kinds of causes of harmonics. One of them is lots of power conversion equipment as modem controller, inverter, converter and SWS(Switching Mode Power Supply). Another is nonlinear operating machines as transformer and motor. The more nonlinear loads like them grow, the more serious problems as harmonic current to source and low power factor because of increasing reactive power grow. It is installed for reactor and L-C Filter to decrease harmonic in general. This paper analysis and compares two of characteristics and harmonic from reactor and L-C Filter with operation of induction motor and power conversion equipment. In the result, L-C Filter more improves unbalance rate and THD than reactor.

  • 기존 Cascade H-bridge 인버터 토폴로지는 커패시터나 다이오드가 없이 스위치로 구성되어 있으며, 필터 없이 정현파와 유사하게 구현할 수 있다. 또한 출력전압 레벨이 높을수록 정현파와 유사하게 되어 고주파가 줄어들며, 각 셀을 직렬로 연결하면 입력전압보다 높은 출력전압 갖는다. 본 논문에서는 기존 Cascade H-bridge 인버터와 NPC(Neutral Point Clamped)가 결합한 Cascade H-bridge NPC 인버터를 제안하였다. Cascade H-bridge NPC 인버터는 기존 Cascade H-bridge 인버터 특성과 유사하며, Cascade H-bridge 인버터와 NPC 인버터의 장점을 가지고 있다. Cascade H-bridge 인버터와 Cascade H-bridge NPC 인버터를 시뮬레이션 통해 THD(Total Harmonic Distortion) 비교분석하였고 시뮬레이션은 PSIM 9.1.4을 가지고 검증하였다.

  • In this paper, we proposed the electric circuit using one common arm of H-Bridge Inverters to reduce the number of switching component in multi-level inverter combined with H-Bridge Inverters and Transformers. and furthermore we suggested the new multi-level PWU inverter using PWM level to reduce THD(Total Harmonic Distortion). and we used the switching method that can be same rate of usage at each transformer. Also, we tested the proposed prototype 9-level inverter to clarify the proposed electric circuit and reasonableness of control signal for the proposed multi-level PWM inverter.

  • In recent years, installation of the new and renewable energy system is rapidly increasing. Because the new and renewable energy system is a practical distributed generation system to save energy resources and to keep environments clean. Conventional single-phase utility interactive inverter controls output current by using PI current controller. However, this method is insufficient to suppress harmonic current resulted from nonlinear loads in grid line. In this paper, in order to suppress periodic waveform distortion and improve THD(Total Harmonic Distortion), new type current controller added a parallel repetitive controller is proposed and then performance of the proposed controller was verified with computer simulation.

  • This paper presents harmonic evaluation of an IAT(Intra Airport Transit) system in Incheon International Airport. It will be used for electric vehicles with 80[kW] per car produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, and which is constructed with SIV(Static Inverter), VVVF controller and two induction motor. The vehicles operated in the IAT system can be treated as rapidly changing DC loat and at a feeding substation, 3-phase electric power is transferred to DC 750[V] by rectifier. Since vehicles are changing continuously, the voltages for the load fluctuate in the IAT system, and moreover, the voltage fluctuation generates high-order harmonics. It results the difficulty in maintaining power quality in KEPCO systems' side. The power quality of the IAT system in Incheon International Airport is evaluated using PSCAD/EMTDC simulator in the paper. The THD(Total Harmonic Distortion) of voltages and TDD(Total Demand Distortion) of currents, indices are calculated for the IAT system using the results of PSCAD/EMTDC dynamic simulation.

  • Currently, the AC-to-DC power conversion system using diode rectifiers is mainly used in large vessels. Also, to reduce the total harmonic distortion(THD) of current and voltage, this system requires an additional phase-shifting transformer which can be powered multi-pulses. In this case, due to the installation of the transformer, the spatial or economic loss occurs. This paper presents a novel active rectification scheme using silicon controlled rectifier(SCR) or insulated gate bipolar transistor(IGBT) devices on behalf of the diode rectifiers which are currently operating in large vessels such as LNG Carrier(LNGC). The proposed system can use the low voltage source and reduce current and voltage harmonics generated by nonlinear loads connected to the power distribution bus and save economic costs by removing the phase-shifting transformers which are used in conventional system. Computer simulations are performed under the electric propulsion system which is operating in current large vessel. The results are shown in support of the improvement of THD included in the current and voltage wave forms of propulsion motor.

  • This paper proposes a current harmonic compensation method for the grid-connected inverter, especially caused by the grid impedance. Grid impedance causes low order harmonics in the grid current and deteriorates power quality. This paper analyzes the negative impact of the grid impedance, and proposes an active feedforward compensation method. Proposing method verified through simulation and experiment with 3-phase 1.5kW voltage source inverter prototype.

  • The electric quality of train is represented by voltage and current harmonics at PT(Ratio 25,000/15/[V]) which is located between pantograph and primary winding of train transformer. In this paper, voltage and current harmonics were measured on the test EMU(electric multiple unit)train with maximum speed of 180km/h in existing railway lines(chungbuk, Taeback, Honam). As a results of test, it is found that the electric quality of train depends on the mostly operation conditions which is accelerating mode and braking mode on each sections. Voltage THD is above all 3[%] and current harmonics is monitored from lowest Harmonic to highest Harmonic in case of accelerating mode. But, highest current harmonics is not monitored in case of breaking mode. The results in this paper can help to stabilize the power device and power converter of the test EMU train.
