  • Contact material is widely used as electrical parts. Ag-CdO has a good wear resistance and stable contact resistance. But the disadvantages of Ag-Cd alloy are coarse Cd oxides and harmful metal, Cd. Then Ag-Sn alloy that has stable and fine Sn oxide at high temperature has been developed. In order to investigate the effect of Te additional that affects the formation of the oxide layer on the surface and the formation of oxide in matrix Ag, we studied the microstructures and properties of Ag-Sn-In(-Te) material fabricated by rapid solidification process. The experimental procedure were melting using high frequency induction, melt spinning, and internal oxidation. Specimens were examined and analyzed by Transmission electron microscopy(TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS) and Vickers hardness. As a result, internal oxidation was completed even at $600^{\circ}C$. Te forms coarse $In_{2}TeO_{6}$ phase and makes fine and well dispersed $SnO_{2}$ Phase. 0.3 wt% Te shows favorable properties.

  • This study investigated the bath compositions and plating conditions and crystal structure used for achieving nickel-thallium-phosphorus deposits by means electroless plating. The electroless nickel-thallium-phosphorus deposits were achieved with a bath using sodium hypophosphite as the reducing agent and sodium citrate as the complexing agent. The depositing rate was 10.5mg.$cm^{2-1}$ .$hr^{-1 }$ from the optimistic bath composition, 0.1M nickel sulfate, 0.005M thallium sulfate, 0.2M sodium hypophosphite, and 0.05M sodium citrat and the recommended plating conditions, pH 5.5 and $90^{\circ}C$. The composition of alloy deposits determined by X-ray analysis (EDS) that the Thallium was increased with major increasing concentration of complexing agent and thallium ion in bath solution, it decreased according to the increasing concentrations of reduction agent in the bath solution, Bit Phosphorus showed a contrary to the thallium. It was observed from X-ray diffraction analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy. The crystalline structure of deposits was amorphous at the first deposited state but it was changed $Ni-T1-Ni_{5}$ $P_2$ polycrystalline when subjected to 1 hour heat treatment of more than $350^{\circ}C$. TEM observation demonstrated that the microstructure was identical to the result of the XRD at as deposited but it became $Ni-Tl-Ni_{5}$ $P_2$ polycrystalline when heated. And grain size was 10-50nm.

  • The Janghang smelter is the first lead, zinc and copper smelting facility in Korea which was operated for a half century from 1936 to 1989. The clay minerals and their heavy metal association in the soil profile around the smelter have been studied using XRD, EPMA, SEM-EDS, TEM, EPR and sequential extraction techniques. The soils in A horizon are highly acidic showing pH 4.45. The pH is going up with increasing depth. They have residual water contents of 1.18-1.51 wt%, loss on ignition of 6.32-7.79 wt%, and carbon contents of 0.08-0.88 wt%. Soils consist of quartz, feldspar, muscovite, kaolinite, vermiculite, biotite, chlorite, goethite and hematite in the decreasing abundance. The contents of clay minerals, especially vermiculite and chlorite, decrease with increasing depth. Sequential extraction experiments for the profile samples show that heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd) are highly concentrated in the A horizon of the soil profile as water-extractable (mostly amorphous), MgCl2-extractable (exchangeable in clay minerals), and organic phases. The heavy metal contents decrease with increasing depth. It suggests that the heavy metals are mainly associate with clay minerlas in an exchangeable state. It is also noted that heavy metals are highly concentrated in the manganese and iron oxide phases.

  • The effect of Cu addition on the corrosion characteristics of Zr alloys that developed for nuclear fuel cladding in KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) was evaluated. The alloys having different element of Nb, Sn, Fe, Cr and Cu were manufactured and the corrosion tests of the alloys were performed in static autoclave at $360^{\circ}C$, distilled water condition. The alloys were also examined for their microstructures using the optical microscope and the TEM equipped with EDS and the oxide property was characterized by using X-ray diffraction. From the result of corrosion test more than 450 days, the corrosion rate of the Zr-based alloys was changed with alloying element such as Nb, Sn, Fe, Cr and especially affected by Cu addition. The corrosion resistance was increased with increasing the Cu content and the tetragonal $ZrO_2$ layer was more stabilized on the Cu-containing alloys.

  • Various kinds of Mg-Zn-Ca base alloys were rapidly quenched via melt spinning process. The meltspun ternary and quaternary alloy ribbons were heat-treated, and then the effects of additional elements on age hardening behavior and phase change of precipitates were investigated using Vickers hardness tester, XRD, and TEM equipped with EDS system. In ternary alloys, age hardening was mostly due to the distribution of $Mg_6Ca_2Zn_3$ and $Mg_2Ca$. The stable phases of precipitates were varied according to the aging temperature and the alloy composition. With the increase of Ca content, $Mg_2Ca$ precipitates were detected more than $Mg_6Ca_2Zn_3$ precipitates. In quaternary alloys, the precipitates taken from Mg-Zn-Ca-Co were identified as new quaternary phase, whereas those taken from Mg-Zn-Ca-Zr as MgZnCa containing Zr. In general, the ternary alloy showed higher peak hardness and thermal stability than the quaternary considering the total amounts of the solutes. It implies that the structure of precipitate should be controlled to have the coherent interface with the Mg matrix.

  • Nanostructured copper compounds were grown by electrochemical anodization of copper foil in aqueous NaOH under varying conditions including electrolyte concentration, reaction temperature, current density, and reaction time. Their morphology and atomic composition were investigated by using SEM, TEM, XRD, EDS and XPS. At the conditions ([NaOH] = 1 M, $20^{\circ}C$, $2\;mA\;cm^{-2}$), wire-like orthorhombic $Cu(OH)_2$ nanobundles with an average width of 100 - 300 nm and length of $10\;{\mu}m$ were synthesized with the preferential [100] growth direction. Furthermore, when the concentration decreased to 0.5 M NaOH, the 1D nanobundle structure became narrower and longer without any change in compositions or crystalline structure. Side reaction pathways appeared to compete with the 1D nanostructure formation channels: the formation of CuO nanoleaves at $50^{\circ}C$ via the sequential dehydration of $Cu(OH)_2$, CuO/$Cu_2O$ aggregates in 4 M NaOH, and $Cu_2O$ nanoparticles and CuO nanosheets at lower current density.

  • To tap the possibility of exploiting the precipitates as flux-pinning center in the Bi-2223 superconducting system, as-received Bi-2223/Ag tapes with the starting composition of Bi$_{1.8}$Pb$_{0.4}$Sr$_2$Ca$_{2.2}$Cu$_3$O$_8$ were post-annealed at various temperature, oxygen partial pressure, and annealing time. The 2$^{nd}$ phases in the annealed specimen were analysed with XRD, SEM, TEM, and EDS. The size and the distribution of the precipitates such as (Ca,Sr)$_2$(Pb,Bi)O$_4$ and Bi$_{0.5}$Pb$_3$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$CuO$_{12+{\delta}}$ (3221) in the Bi-2223 matrix was controllable by varying heat-treatment condition without breaking the connectivity of the 2223 grains. The nano-size precipitates within the 2223 grains are conjectured as working as flux-pinning sites, resulting in increased J$_c$ value.

  • High-purity aluminum nitride nanopowders were synthesized using an RF induction thermal plasma instrument. Ammonia and nitrogen gases were used as sheath gas to control the reactor atmosphere. Synthesized AlN nanopowders were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, BET, FTIR, and N-O analyses. It was possible to synthesize high-purity AlN nanoparticles through control of the ammonia gas flow rate. However, additional process parameters such as plasma power and reactor pressure had to be controlled for the production of high-purity AlN nanopowders using nitrogen gas.

  • Solvothermal treatment of late transition metal acetylacetonates in a novel medium composed either of pure acetophenone or acetophenone mixtures with amino alcohols offers a general approach to uniform hydrophilic metal nanoparticles with high crystallinity and low degree of aggregation. Both pure metal and mixed-metal particles can be accesses by this approach. The produced materials have been characterized by SEM-EDS, TEM, FTIR in the solid state and by Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis in solutions. The chemical mechanisms of the reactions producing nanoparticles has been followed by NMR. Carrying out the process in pure acetophenone produces palladium metal, copper metal with minor impurity of $Cu_2O$, and NiO. The synthesis starting from the mixtures of Pd and Ni acetylacetonates with up to 20 mol% of Pd, renders in minor yield the palladium-based metal alloy along with nickel oxide as the major phase. Even the synthesis starting from a mixed solution of $Cu(acac)_2$ and $Ni(acac)_2$ produces oxides as major products. The situation is improved when aminoalcohols such as 2-aminoethanol or 2-dimethylamino propanol are added to the synthesis medium. The particles in this case contain metallic elements and pairs of individual metals (not metal alloys) when produced from mixed precursor solutions in this case.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted considerable attention as possible routes to device miniaturization due to their excellent mechanical, thermal, and electronic properties. These properties show great potential for devices such as field emission displays, CNT based transistors, and bio-sensors. The metals such as nickel, cobalt, gold, iron, platinum, and palladium are used as the catalysts for the CNT growth. In this study, diamond-like carbon (DLC) was used for CNT growth as a nonmetallic catalyst layer. DLC films were deposited by a radio frequency (RF) plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) method with a mixture of methane and hydrogen gases. CNTs were synthesized by a hot filament plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (HF-PECVD) method with ammonia (NH3) as a pretreatment gas and acetylene (C2H2) as a carbon source gas. The grown CNTs and the pretreated DLC filmswere observed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) measurement, and the structure of the grown CNTs was analyzed by high resolution transmission scanning electron microscopy (HR-TEM). Also, using energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) measurement, we confirmed that only the carbon component remained on the substrate.
