The flip chip bonding utilizing self-aligning characteristic of solder becomes mandatory to meet to tolerances for the optical device. In this paper, a parametric study of aging condition and pad size of sample was conducted. A TiW/Cu UBM structure was adopted and sample was aging treated to analyze the effect of intermetallic compound with time variation. After aging treatment, the tendency to decrease in shear strength was measured and the structure of the fine joint area was observed by using SEM, TEM and EDS. In result, the shear strength was decreased of about 20% in the $100{\mu}m$ sample at $170^{\circ}C$ aging compared with the maximum shear strength of same pad size sample. In the case of the $120^{\circ}C$ aging treatment, 17% of decrease in shear strength was measured at the $100{\mu}m$ pad size sample. Also, intremetallic compound of $Cu_6Sn_5$ and $Cu_3Sn$ were observed through the TEM measurement by using an FIB technique that is very useful to prepare TEM thin foil specimens from the solder joint interface.
Whiskers of SiC were grown from the mixture of silica and graphite powders by Acheson method(direct heating method). The structrua, morphological and chemical characterizations have been performed by X-ray diffractometer(XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), optical microscopy(OM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS). The growth mechanism of SiC whiskers is also discussed.

A facile, seed-mediated preparation method of trimetallic Au@Pb@Pt core-shell nanoparticles is developed. Au nanoparticles are the template seeds onto which sequentially reduced Pb and Pt are deposited. The trimetallic core-shell structure is confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, TEM and EDS analysis, and cyclic voltammetry. The trimetallic Au@Pb@Pt core-shell nanoparticles show high electrocatalytic activity for formic acid and methanol electrooxidation.
Asian dust (Hwangsa) interacts with light, atmospheric gas, aerosol, and marine ecosystem, affecting Earth climate. Mineralogical properties are essential to understand the interaction between the dust and environments. In this study, we examined the mineralogical properties of Asian dust collected at Deokjeok Island, Incheon, Korea in February 22, 2015. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses showed that phyllosilicate minerals (62 wt%) dominate the Asian dust. Illite-smectite series clay minerals (55%) were common with minor chlorite (5%) and kaolinite (2%). Non-phyllosilicate minerals were quartz (18%), plagioclase (10%), K-feldspar (4%), calcite (4%), and gypsum (1%). Similar results were obtained by mineral quantification using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS). Transmission electron microscopy combined with EDS confirmed illite-smectite series clay minerals as the dominant phyllosilicate type. Morphological analyses using SEM showed clay agglomerates, clay-coated quartz, feldspars, and micas. Gypsum grains were common on the particle surface, while calcite nanofibers, previously reported as common on the surface, were rare, indicating the reaction of calcite and acidic atmospheric pollutants to form gypsum. The analytical result of 2015 Asian dust would contribute to the establishment of mineralogical base for the modeling of the interaction between Asian dust and environments.
This study proposed the fabrication and deposition of high purity crystalline $core-TiO_2/shell-Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles. Morphological properties of $core-TiO_2$ and coated $shell-Al_2O_3$ were confirmed by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and transmission electron microscope - energy dispersive spectroscopy (TEM-EDS). The electrical properties of the prepared $core-TiO_2/shell-Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles were evaluated by applying them to a working electrode of a Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC). The particle size, growth rate and the main crystal structure of $core-TiO_2$ were analyzed through dynamic light scattering system (DLS), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The $core-TiO_2$, which has a particle size of 17.1 nm, a thin film thickness of $20.1{\mu}m$ and a main crystal structure of anatase, shows higher electrical efficiency than the conventional paste-based dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). In addition, the energy conversion efficiency (6.28%) of the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) using the $core-TiO_2/shell-Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles selectively controlled to the working electrode is 26.1% higher than the energy conversion efficiency (4.99%) of the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) using the conventional paste method.

Objectives: Chrysotile is mineralogically distinct from amphiboles, displaying a notably different chemical structure. The thin sheets that form chrysotile fiber lead to the ability of the lung/macrophage system to decompose the chrysotile fibers. This study was performed in order to compare the physicochemical characteristics of Korean asbestos with those of Canadian amphiboles. Materials: An acid solubility test for each test substance was done to compare pH 4.5 and pH 1.2 distilled water. Asbestos fibers which had been placed in acid solutions for five days, five weeks and weeks were analyzed with a transmission electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (TEM-EDS). Results: The composition element (Mg) of Korean chrysotile, Korean anthophyllite and Canadian amosite significantly decreased from 5 days and also decreased significantly after 5 weeks and 10 weeks. Only the composition (Mg) of Canadian crocidolite did not change under any conditions. From 5 days, the Mg of Korean chrysotile, Korean anthophyllite and Canadian amosite were significantly lower than before the acid treatment, but there were no changes over time or by the pH of the acid solutions. Particularly after 10 weeks, the composition (Mg) of Korean chrysotile in the pH 1.2 acid solution showed a rapid reduction of 15.86%. Conclusions: Korean chrysotile was very weak in an acid environment, beginning to show significant changes after 5 days. The Mg component rapidly decreased after 10 weeks in the pH 1.2 acid solution.
Fine mullite precursor was prepared by colloidal sol-gel processes. Aluminum isopropoxide $[Al(i-OC_3H_7)_3]$ as a starting material of $Al_2O_3$ and silicic acid extracted by THF from sodium silicate as a starting material of $SiO_2$ were used. Sodium silicate was first acidified by dilute sulfuric acid to form silicic acid. ; followed by extraction using THF, Mullite precursor was synthesized by sol-gel processes from aluminum isopropoxide and sillicic acid considering the degree of extraction of Si and the removal efficiency of Na. The impurity content of silicic acid extracted by THF was below 0.04% Synthetic mullite precursor consisted of $3Al_2O_3{\cdot}2SiO_2$ and showd spherical particles of $0.05{\mu}m$ diameter and below 0.462% of impurites. The mullite precursor was characterized by EDS, XRD, TG/DSC SEM, FT-IR spectroscopy ICP and TEM.
Dinickel-silicide $(Ni_2Si)/glass$ was employed as a counter electrode for a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) device. $Ni_2Si$ was formed by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) at $700^{\circ}C$ for 15 seconds of a 50 nm-Ni/50 nm-Si/glass structure. For comparison, $Ni_2Si$ on quartz was also prepared through conventional electric furnace annealing (CEA) at $800^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. XRD, XPS, and EDS line scanning of TEM were used to confirm the formation of $Ni_2Si$. TEM and CV were employed to confirm the microstructure and catalytic activity. Photovoltaic properties were examined using a solar simulator and potentiostat. XRD, XPS, and EDS line scanning results showed that both CEA and RTA successfully led to tne formation of nano $thick-Ni_2Si$ phase. The catalytic activity of $CEA-Ni_2Si$ and $RTA-Ni_2Si$ with respect to Pt were 68 % and 56 %. Energy conversion efficiencies (ECEs) of DSSCs with $CEA-Ni_2Si$ and $RTA-Ni_2Si$catalysts were 3.66 % and 3.16 %, respectively. Our results imply that nano-thick $Ni_2Si$ may be used to replace Pt as a reduction catalytic layer for a DSSCs. Moreover, we show that nano-thick $Ni_2Si$ can be made available on a low-cost glass substrate via the RTA process.
The effect of Zr content on the thermal stability of mechanically alloyed Al-8wt.% (Ti+Zr) alloys was investigated. As the Zr to Ti addition ratio increased the decrease of hardness due to the long time exposure at high temperature reduced so that the thermal stability of the alloy was improved. From the TEM work it was found that the coarsening of precipitates was responsible for the decrease of hardness and the coarsening of precipitates could be suppressed by the addition of Zr, XRD, SAD and EDS analyses confirmed that these precipitates were consisted of DO$\sub$22/, and DO$\sub$23/ type Al$_3$(Ti+Zr) ternary in termetallic compounds. Especially for the DO$\sub$23/ Al$_3$(Ti+Zr), the lattice parameter changed toward the smaller lattice mismatch between the precipitate and Al matrix as the Zr content increased. Therefore, it was considered that the improvement of thermal stability of Al-8wt.% (Ti+Zr) alloys was due to the formation of the ternary Al$_3$( Ti + Zr) intermetallic compounds.
