  • To ascertain the effects of hair dyeing application on the DNA damage in human lymphocytes, a mixture of permanent black colored hair dye with the same amount of oxidant containing 6% hydrogen peroxide was used. A hair dyeing with contacting the scalp (conventional dyeing) and a hair dyeing with 3 to 4mm away from the scalp (alternative dyeing) were applied to each If young healthy women. Blood was taken from the brachial vein at two sampling times, just before and 6 hours after the hair dyeing, and tail extent moment(TEM) and tail length (TL) were measured by using a comet assay. After dyeing, TL was significantly increased in both conventional dyeing group and alternative dyeing group compared with before dyeing as an average of 47% and 28%, respectively, and TL for conventional dyeing group was higher than alternative dyeing group as an average of 1.2 fold. After dyeing, TEM was significantly increased in both conventional dyeing group and alternative dyeing group compared with before dyeing as an average of 192% and 76%, respectively, and TEM for conventional dyeing group was significantly higher than alternative dyeing group as an average of 1.7 fold. Therefore, alternative dyeing application was induced to lower lymphocyte DNA damage than conventional dyeing application, and TEM was appeared to be a more sensitive tool for the measurement of lymphocyte DNA damage than TL in this study.

  • High-Quality 1-Dimensional InN single crystalline have been grown by Halide Vapor-Phase Epitaxy on the Au catalyst coated Si substrate using the vapor-liquid-solid growth mechanism. We have been grown 1-dimension InN nanowires having controlled the growth conditions for substrate temperature and gases flow rate. The grown InN nanowire of characteristics for morphologies, crystal structure, and element analysis were carried out by SEM, HR-TEM, and EDS respectively. And the defects of InN crystalline were analyzed by indexing of selective area diffraction pattern with attached HR-TEM. We have successfully obtained the defect-free 1-dimensional InN single crystalline nanowire at the atmosphere pressure.

  • Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and anger electron microscopy(AES) studies of GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs(x=0.58) quantum wells grown by low pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition(LP-MOCVD) are carried out. Isolated quantum well structure having the well width as small as 15 \ulcornerand multiquantum well structure, which consisted of 51 alternating layers with each thickness of 10\ulcorner were suscessfully grown. TEM analyses have shown that their interfaces were almost completely coherent without any structural disorder, alloy clustering and crystal defect. AES depth resolution have shown the compositional periodicity of superlattice structure.

  • Growing demands for comprehending complicated nano-scale phenomena in atomic resolution has attracted in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques for understanding their dynamics. However, simple to safe TEM sample preparation for in-situ observation has been limited. Here, we suggested the optical microscopy based micro-manipulating system for transferring TEM samples. By adopting our manipulator system, several types of samples from nano-wires to plate-like thin samples were transferred on micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS) chip in a single step. Furthermore, the control of electrostatic force between the sample and the probe tip is found to be a key role in transferring process.

  • It is practically hard to prepare good TEM specimens from powders which are embedded in epoxy materials for ion milling, because the milling rate difference between powders and epoxy is quite large. In order to overcome this problem, we tried to find methods to increase the density of powders in the embedding epoxy without loosing the adhesive strength between them. Powder density was considerably increased by employing a centrifuge for embedding, compared to the result by a conventional vacuum embedding. In addition, mixing powders of different sizes after sieving also enhanced the final density by allowing smaller particles filling in the gaps of larger particles. Ion milling of powders embedded by these methods resulted in thin specimens good enough for normal TEM works. TEM specimens from spherical, platy and fibrous powders of submicron size were successfully prepared by this centrifuging method.

  • Mica-type phyllosilicate particles in the shales of the Manhang formation at the Taeback area in the Kangwon Province were studied using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The average chemical formula of the mica-type phyllosilicate mineral analysed by EPMA is $K_{1.35}(Fe_{0.18}Mg_{0.03}Al_{3.86})(Si_{6.55}Al_{1.45})O_{20}(OH)_4$. Low K contents compared to the ideal chemistry of muscovite indicate the presence of illite in the mica-type phyllosilicate particle. X-ray diffraction study showed that pyrophyllite commonly coexists with muscovite in the shales from the Manhang Formation. TEM observations showed both the interlayer and intralayer mixing of $9.3-{\AA}$ pyrophyllite and $10-{\AA}$ muscovite layers. The low K content of the mica-type phyllosilicates apparently come from the close mixing of pyrophyllite and muscovite.

  • STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The degree of conversion may influence the ultimate mechanical and physical properties of provisional crown and fixed partial denture materials. The high levels of the unreacted residual monomer may cause deleterious effect on the properties. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to measure the degree of conversion of bis-acrylic based provisional crown and fixed partial denture materials by using an infrared spectroscopic method. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Chemically activated three bis-acrylic based provisional crown and fixed partial denture materials, LuxaTemp [DMG, Hamburg, Germany], fast set TemPhase [Kerr, Orange, CA, USA] and Protemp 3 Garant [3M-ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA], were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). The FTIR spectra of the materials tested were immediately obtained after mixing. The specimens were stored under dry conditions and at $23^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours, and then the spectra of the materials were also obtained. The degree of conversion (%) was calculated from the spectrum of the absorbance between the aliphatic double bond at 1637 $cm^{-1}$ and the aromatic double bond at 1608 $cm^{-1}$ using the baseline method. The data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and the multiple comparison Scheffe test at the significance level of 0.05. RESULTS: The mean value and standard deviation of the degree of conversion were 52.5 % ${\pm}$ 1.1 %, 50.3 % ${\pm}$ 0.8 %, and 42.3 % ${\pm}$ 4.9 % for LuxaTemp, Protemp 3 Garant and fast set TemPhase, respectively. There was no significant difference between LuxaTemp and Protemp 3 Garant, whereas there was a statistically difference between Protemp 3 Garant and fast set TemPhase, and LuxaTemp and fast set TemPhase (P < .05). CONCLUSION: The degree of conversion of fast set TemPhase was significantly lower than those of the others. The degree of conversion may be correlated with the rate of polymerization.

  • In this paper the electric and magnetic field distributions in a TEM cell used for EMC testing are analyzed numerically. The fields are distorted with the increase of frequency. These distortions are due to higher order modes and resonances and cause the bandwidthe limitations in the uae of TEM cels. The upper frequency is lower modes however, are reflected at some points through the tapered ends of the cell. Higher order modes however, are reflected at some points within the tapered region where it becomes too small to support the modes, The first two TE mode(TE$_{01}$ and TE$_{10}$) cutoff frequencies and the first six TE$_mnp$ resonant ferquencies are identified in a TEM cell (1x0 6x2m,w=0.72m) from field patterns and the results are consistent with others' data. The circumferential wall currents to support resonances are shown. For the large cell it is desired to extend the usable frequency range above the cutoff frequency of the first higher order mode. This study proposes an attempt to expand the frequency bandwidth by a resonance suppression.

  • Md:YAG laser has been used in many applications such as micromachining, nonlinear optical experiments, holography, and rangefinding. These applications quite often require operation of the laser at the $TEM_{00}$ mode since this mode produces the smallest beam divergence, the highest power density, and, hence, the highest brightness. In this study, a pinhole is put between a rod and a half mirror to make the $TEM_{00}$ mode, and then we measured the intensity distribution of the output beam as reducing the diameter of the pinhole from 6mm to 1.5mm. As a result, the optimum size of the pinhole fixed in a resonator to make the $TEM_{00}$ mode was obtained, and we found out that the output beam of the pulsed Nd:YAG laser with a single elliptical cavity has a Gaussian distribution.
