Application of CBED Techniques of Energy Filtering TEM for Si-Al Disordering Study of Albite (알바이트의 Si-Al 배열상태 연구를 위한 에너지여과 투과전자현미경의 CBED법 적용)

  • XRD studies on annealed Na-feldspar (Amelia albite) at $1100^{\circ}C$ showed rapid structural changes due to Si-Al disordering, which resulted in phase transformations from low albite to high albite by 4-days annealing test. TEM SAED analyses on the annealed samples revealed a trend of structural changes, but estimation of the structural state was difficult due to a large deviation of the SAED data. Optimum conditions of CBED analyses on albite was established by employing a cooling specimen holder, 120 kV of acceleration voltage, 37 Jim of condenser aperture size and 25 nm of spot size. A proper orientation showing distinct changes of HOLZ lines corresponding to the structure changes of albite turned out to be close to the [418] direction with $-1.2^{\circ}$ tilting, where the width of two HOLZ lines in low albite was opposite to those in high albite.

Effects of Postannealing on GaN Grown by MOCVD on Reactive ion Beam Pretreated Sapphire Substrate (활성화 이온빔 처리된 사파이어 기판상 MOCVD로 성장시킨 GaN의 열처리 효과)

  • GaN is a key material for blue and ultraviolet optoelectronics. Postannealing process was employed to investigate the structural change and the effect on electrical property of the GaN thin film grown on reactive ion beam(RIB) treated sapphire (0001) substrate. Full width half maximum (FWHM) of double crystal x-ray diffraction (DCXRD) spectra and Hall mobility of the specimen were significantly changed depending on the postannealing time at $1000^{\circ}C$ in N2 atmosphere. FWHM of DCXRD reduced upto about 50arc-sec and the mobility increased about $80\textrm{cm}^2$/V.sec. The postannealed specimen with the best mobility was compared with sample without annealing by TEM. The former sample showed a decrease in the lattice strain and reduction of dislocation density by about 56~59%. This implies that there is a strong correlation between crystalline quality and the electrical property of the film. The Present results clearly show that the combination of RIB pretreatment and proper post annealing conditions results in the improved properties of GaN films grown by MOCVD.

Typing of Extended-Spectrum ${\beta}$-Lactamase (ESBL) Producing Enterobacteriaceae Isolated from Slaughterhouse in Pusan, Korea (부산 도축장에서 분리된 광범위 베타 락탐 분해효소(Extended-Spectrum ${\beta}$-Lactamase, ESBL)생성 장내세균의 형별분류)

  • The emergence of extended spectrum ${\beta}$-lactamase producing bacteria is causing very serious problems in Korea. Although there have been many reports about these bacteria Isolated from patients and clinical specimens, there is no report of extended spectrum ${\beta}$-lactamase producing organisms isolated from natural environment in Korea. This study was conducted to investigate the biological characteristics and extended spectrum ${\beta}$-lactamase types of eighteen strains of extended spectrum ${\beta}$-lactamase producing Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli isolated from a slaughterhouse in Pusan in Korea during 2002 to 2004. Extended spectrum ${\beta}$-lactamases were identified by double-disk synergy test, conjugation, isoelectric focusing values and gene sequencing. Eight strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae and two strains of Eschericha coli were isolated kom pigs and transferred extended spectrum ${\beta}$-lactamase genes to recipient Escherichia coli J53 (sodium azide resistant and ceftazidime senstive) strain by conjugation. The conjugants of extended spectrum ${\beta}$-lactamase genes were alignments and translated to amino acids by BCM and NCBI blast. Eight conjugants of Klebsiella pneumonae were typed TEM-52, and two strains of Escherichia coli, SHV-12, but CMY-1 type were not detected in this study.

Occupational Exposure to Airborne Asbestos Fibers in Serpentine Quarries and a Steel Mill (사문석 채석장과 제철소 내 사문석 취급 근로자의 공기 중 석면 노출 평가)

  • Objectives: Asbestos contents of crushed serpentine rocks and airborne fiber concentrations of workers were determined at two serpentine quarries and a steel mill. Methods: Bulk samples of uncrushed and crushed serpentine rocks were collected and analyzed by PLM and TEM. Airborne asbestos samples were collected from the breathing zone of workers and the vicinity of working area and analyzed by PCM and TEM. Results: Chrysotile was identified with antigorite, lizardite and non-asbestiform actinolite in bulk samples. The arithmetic means of chrysotile contents in crushed serpentines were 0.11, 0.01, 0.42%(W/W) by quarry A, quarry B and a steel mill, respectively. The asbestos concentrations of all personal samples were less than 0.1 f/cc which is the permissible exposure limit of workers in Korea. The arithmetic means of airborne asbestos concentrations were 0.017 f/cc and 0.009 f/cc in personal samples collected from two serpentine quarries. The asbestos concentrations of all personal samples collected from a steel mill were less than LODs by PCM analysis but asbestos was detected in area samples by TEM. By the job tasks of serpentine quarries, crusher/separator operation generated the highest exposure to airborne asbestos. Conclusions: Although chrysotile contents in crushed serpentines of quarries were less the permissible level, the highest exposure of workers in serpentine quarries reached up to 76% of the permissible level of airborne asbestos. There were also possibilities of occupational exposure to airborne asbestos in a steel mill. The present exposure study should encourage further survey and occupational control of quarries producing serpentine or other types of asbestos-bearing rocks.

The Effect of Solution Heat Treatment and Aging Treatment on the Mechanical Properties of Backward Extruded A6061 Alloy for Pressure Vessels (고압용기로 사용되는 후방압출된 알루미늄 6061합금의 기계적 특성에 미치는 용체화처리 및 시효처리의 영향)

  • Mechanical properties and precipitation behavior of backward extruded 6061 Al alloy for pressure vessel were investigated using tensile test, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). In this study, solution heat treatment (SHT) was performed at $535^{\circ}C$ for 30~90 min and aging treatment was conducted at 177 and $190^{\circ}C$ for 1~7 h. Maximum tensile strength of $36.6kgf/mm^2$ and yield strength of $33.29kgf/mm^2$ were achieved at the aging time of 5 h at $190^{\circ}C$. TEM observation showed that fine needle-like ${\beta}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ phase which has 35~45 nm of length was uniformly distributed in the aged 6061 Al alloy specimen. From tensile test, TEM and DSC analysis, it is expected that aging time of 2~5 h at $190^{\circ}C$ is suitable for the extruded A6061 used as pressure vessels.

Super-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope Image of Nanomaterials Using Deep Learning (딥러닝을 이용한 나노소재 투과전자 현미경의 초해상 이미지 획득)

  • In this study, using deep learning, super-resolution images of transmission electron microscope (TEM) images were generated for nanomaterial analysis. 1169 paired images with 256 × 256 pixels (high resolution: HR) from TEM measurements and 32 × 32 pixels (low resolution: LR) produced using the python module openCV were trained with deep learning models. The TEM images were related to DyVO4 nanomaterials synthesized by hydrothermal methods. Mean-absolute-error (MAE), peak-signal-to-noise-ratio (PSNR), and structural similarity (SSIM) were used as metrics to evaluate the performance of the models. First, a super-resolution image (SR) was obtained using the traditional interpolation method used in computer vision. In the SR image at low magnification, the shape of the nanomaterial improved. However, the SR images at medium and high magnification failed to show the characteristics of the lattice of the nanomaterials. Second, to obtain a SR image, the deep learning model includes a residual network which reduces the loss of spatial information in the convolutional process of obtaining a feature map. In the process of optimizing the deep learning model, it was confirmed that the performance of the model improved as the number of data increased. In addition, by optimizing the deep learning model using the loss function, including MAE and SSIM at the same time, improved results of the nanomaterial lattice in SR images were achieved at medium and high magnifications. The final proposed deep learning model used four residual blocks to obtain the characteristic map of the low-resolution image, and the super-resolution image was completed using Upsampling2D and the residual block three times.

Design of W-band 12-way radial power combiner (W-밴드 12-way radial 전력 결합기 설계)

  • Design and fabrication method of W-band 12-way radial power combiner is proposed in this paper. The proposed structure is used with TE10 to TEM mode converter, which is realized using 2-step impedance transformer. The pin structure for mode converter is well bonded to the housing so that environment conditions such as vibration or shock are not affected. Proposed W-band power combiner has less than 0.7 dB insertion loss and more than 13 dB return loss from 88 GHz to 98 GHz. The measured output isolations between each other are greater than 7.5 dB from 82 to 100 GHz and phase differences are less than 10 degree from 88 to 96 GHz. Proposed power combiner is expected compact radar and various applications requiring for high power and stable environment conditions.

Ethanol Electro-Oxidation and Stability of Pt Supported on Sb-Doped Tin Oxide (안티몬 도핑된 주석 산화물에 담지된 백금 촉매의 에탄올 산화 반응 및 안정성 연구)

  • Electrocatalytic activities and stabilities of Pt supported on Sb-doped $SnO_2$ (ATO) were examined for ethanol oxidation reactions. Pt colloidal particles were deposited on ATO nanoparticles (Pt/ATO) and the prepared electrocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and cyclic voltammetry. Electrochemical activity of the Pt/ATO for ethanol electro-oxidation was compared to those of Pt supported on carbon (Pt/C) and commercial PtRu/C. The activitiy of the Pt/ATO was much higher than those of the Pt/C and commercial PtRu/C. The Pt/ATO exhibited much higher electrochemical stabilities than the Pt/C in 0.5M ${H_2}{SO_4}$ and in 0.5M ${H_2}{SO_4}$/1M ${C_2}{H_5}OH$. According to TEM, the growth rate of Pt particles was lower in the Pt/ATO than it was in the Pt/C. The ATO nanoparticle appears to be a promising support material that promotes electrochemical reactions and stabilizes catalyst particles in direct ethanol fuel cell.

An Investigation on the Airborne Asbestos Concentrations using PCM and TEM in the Public Buildings in Seoul (PCM과 TEM을 이용한 서울지역 일부 공공 건축물의 실내공기 중 석면농도 조사)

  • Objectives: This investigation is purposed to evaluate the airborne asbestos concentrations in the public buildings having asbestos containing materials(ACMs) in Seoul. Methods: The Seoul Metropolitan Government carried out an asbestos survey to the city-owned public buildings to identify the level of risk exposure, classified into low, moderate and high risk. To evaluate the airborne concentration of asbestos, 11 sampling sites in ten buildings based on the survey were selected. The air samples from the eleven sites were analyzed by Phase Contrast Microscopy(PCM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and compared the analytical results from the both. Results: 1. The airborne fiber concentrations by PCM were less than the detection limit($7f/mm^2$) in 9(82%) out of 11 sampling sites. The highest concentration was 0.0043 f/cc, but it was below the guideline value for indoor air quality(0.01 f/cc), proposed by the Ministry of Environment, Korea. 2. In two sampling sites, having moderate risk level, the chrysotile was identified and showed it's concentrations of 0.0102 s/cc and 0.0058 s/cc, less than $5{\mu}m$ lengths. 3. The ACMs identified in the two sampling sites were a packing material(65% of chrysotile) in mechanical area and a thermal system insulation(5% of chrysotile) in a boiler room. Having more possibility of asbestos emission in the mechanical area, it would be required to set up and carry out the asbestos management plan. Conclusions: Based on the result of this study, the airborne asbestos concentrations in the public buildings with ACMs were generally lower than the guideline value for indoor air quality. There are widespread concerns about the possible health risk resulting from the presence of airborne asbestos fibers in the public buildings. Most of the previous studies about airborne asbestos analysis in Korea were performed based on PCM method that asbestos and non-asbestos fibers are counted together. In the public and commercial buildings, having ACMs, it is suggested that the asbestos be analyzed by TEM method to identify asbestos due to concerns about asbestos exposure to workers and unspecified people.

A Study on Microstructures and Chemistry of Anorthoclase Using Electron Microscopy (전자현미경을 이용한 Anorthoclase의 미세구조 및 화학 연구)

  • Microstructures and chemistry of anorthoclase, a high-temperature phase of alkali feldspars, were studied using EPMA and TEM. BSE images of anorthoclase displayed mixtures of Na-rich areas and K-rich areas forming lamella of various sizes. EPMA analysis indicated that the Na-rich area is composed of Ab: 81%, Or: 3% and An: 11% in average, while the K-rich area is composed of Ab: 45%, Or: 44% and An: 11 % in average. TEM analysis revealed albite with Albite twins in the Na-rich area, contrasting to mixtures of albite with fine Albite twins and orthoclase without twins, forming regular lamella of about 100 nm sizes, in the K-rich area. The [001] electron diffraction pattern of the K-rich area also indicated coexistence of the two phases. While streaking parallel to the (010)$^{*}$ direction appeared only in albite due to the twin structure, streaking parallel to the $(100)^{ *}$ direction appeared both in albite and orthoclase, probably due to strain on the interface as well as order-disorder phenomena of Al and Si. It is suggested that the reverse orientation of albite and orthoclase is caused by pole switching to reduce strain on their interfaces. Based on these observations and analyses, the mineral studied is identified as lower-temperature cryptoperthite rather than high-temperature anorthoclase, which has a midium degree of Al-Si ordering and $400^{\circ}C$$600^{\circ}C$ of estimated temperatures for the microstructure formation.
