  • In the present investigation, we studied the modulating effects of caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, and (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate(EGCG) on the methylation status of promoter regions of cell cycle regulator, p16, in human breast cancer T-47D cells. We demonstrated that treatment of T-47D cells with caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, or EGCG partially inhibited the methylation status of the promoter regions of p16 genes determined by methylation-specific PCR. In contrast, unmethylated p16 genes were increased with the treatment of T-47D cells with $20{\mu}M$ of caffeic acid or chlorogenic acid for 6 days. Treatment of T-47D cells with 5, 20 or $50{\mu}M$ of EGCG increased the unmethylation status of p16 gene up to 100%, and the methylation-specific bands of this gene were decreased up to 50% in a concentration-dependent manner. The finding of present study demonstrated that coffee polyphenols and EGCG have strong inhibitory effects of the cellular DNA methylation process through increased formation of S-adenosyl-homocysteine(SAH) during the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT)- mediated O-methylation of these dietary chemicals or an direct inhibition of the DNA methyltransferases. In conclusion, various dietary polyphenols could reverse the methylation status of p16 gene in human breast T-47D cells.

  • Background : The patient's work of breathing(WOBp) during assisted ventilation may vary according to many factors including ventilatory demand of the patients and applied ventilatory setting by the physician. Pressure-controlled ventilation(PCV) which delivers gas with decelerating flow may better meet patients' demand to improve patient-ventilator synchrony compared with volume-controlled ventilation(VCV) with constant flow. This study was conducted to compare the difference in WOBp in two assisted modes of ventilation, PCV and VCV with constant flow. Methods : Ten patients with respiratory failure were included in this study. Initially, the patients were placed on VCV with constant flow at low tidal volume($V_{T,\;LOW}$)(6-8 ml/kg) or high tidal volume($V_{T,\;HIGH}$)(10-12 ml/kg). After a 15 minute stabilization period, VCV with constant flow was switched to PCV and pressure was adjusted to maintain the same tidal volume($V_T$) received on VCV. Other ventilator settings were kept constant. Before changing the ventilatory mode, WOBp, $V_T$, minute ventilation($V_E$), respiratory rate(RR), peak airway pressure (Ppeak), peak inspiratory flow rate(PIFR) and pressure-time product(PTP) were measured. Results : The mean $V_E$ and RR were not different between PCV and VCV during the study period. The Ppeak was significantly lower in PCV than in VCV during $V_{T,\;HIGH}$. HIGH ventilation(p<0.05). PIFR was significantly higher in PCV than in VCV at both $V_T$ (p<0.05). During $V_{T,\;LOW}$ ventilation, WOBp and PTP in PCV($0.80{\pm}0.37\;J/min$, $164.5{\pm}74.4\;cmH_2O.S$) were significantly lower than in VCV($1.06{\pm}0.39J/mm$, $256.4{\pm}107.5\;cmH_2O.S$)(p<0.05). During $V_{T,\;HIGH}$ ventilation, WOBp and PTP in PCV($0.33{\pm}0.14\;J/min$, $65.7{\pm}26.3\;cmH_2O.S$) were also significantly lower than in VCV($0.40{\pm}0.14\;J/min$, $83.4{\pm}35.1\;cmH_2O.S$)(p<0.05). Conclusion : During assisted ventilation, PCV with decelerating flow was more effective in reducing WOBp than VCV with constant flow. But since individual variability was shown, further studies are needed to confirm these results.

  • The influence of ultraviolet(UV)-ray in sun light on human skin has been noted. Textiles can provide protection against harmful UV-radiation. Normally UV-absorbing finishes are used to get better protection. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the UV-cut properties of cotton fabrics treated with UV-absorber. 2,2-dihydroxy-4,4-dimethoxbenzophenone, as UV-absorber was applied to 100% cotton fabric. Reagents added in finishing solution were Triton X-100, polyethylene glycol 400, and $MgCl_2{\cdot}6H_2O$, and C.I. Direct Red 81. Both untreated and treated cotton fabrics were exposed to a xenon arc lamp for 20 and 80 hours. UV absorption spectra of finishing solutions and UV transmission spectra of fabrics were measured by the UV/VIS spectrophotometer. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. Absorption and the related transmission spectra were modified in a controlled way with UV-absorber. Absorption effect of UV-absorber was improved by adding Triton X-100, PEG 400, and $MgCl_2{\cdot}6H_2O$ in finishing solution. The UV absorption of finishing solution was in the following order: U/D/T/P/M>D/T/P/M> D/T> D/P, D>U/T/P/M>U/T>T/P/M>T. The UV transmittance of cotton fabrics was remarkably decreased by the application of UV-absorber and additives. The UV-cut properties were most improved by the application of U/D/T/P/M.

  • Precambrian metamorphic rocks of the Cheongpyeong-Yangpyeong area, central Gyeonggi massif, comprise gneiss, schist, quartzite and amphibolite. Mineral, assemblages of pelitic gneisses are characterized by biotite + cordierite + garnet + sillimanite + K-feldspar + plagioclase + quartz together with minor muscovite, spinel and corundum, and represent the granulite facies metamorphism. In particular, kyanite occurs as fine-grained relict phase inside plagioclase of three gneiss samples. Metamorphic conditions are estimated from garnet-biotite and garnet-cordierite geothermometers in conjunction with garnet-$Al_2SiO_5$-quartz-plagioclase (GASP) and garnet-rutile-$Al_2SiO_5$-ilmenite (GRAIL) geobarometers. They are 700-$850^{\circ}C$ and 3.2-8.3 kbar, and 580-$690^{\circ}C$ and 2.1-3.2 kbar, respectively, when the core and rim compositions of garnet are use. Garnet of the GASP assemblage increases rimward in the Fe and Mn contents but decreases in the Mg content, whereas its Ca content does not vary significantly. Together with the occurrence of relict kyanite and the result of P-T estimates, compositional zoning patterns of garnet indicate a clockwise P-T history. Moreover, the preservation of high-pressure minerals such as kyanite in plagiocalse, even after the medium-pressure granulite facies metamorphis, suggests a rapid change in P-T conditions.

  • Hardy's inequality is refined non-trivially as the form $${\int_{0}^{{\infty}}}\{{\frac{1}{x}}{\int_{0}^{x}}f(t)dt\}^pdx{\leq}Q_f{\times}({\frac{p}{p-1}})^p{\int_{0}^{x}}f^p(x)dx$$ for some $Q_f:0{\leq}Q_f{\leq}1$. $P{\acute{o}}lya$-Knopp's inequality is also refined by the similar form.
