Steel members have advantages of resisting torsion and axial compression. In design, residual stresses at the welded joint of T-shape steel pipes are one of the most important points to be considered. In this paper, characteristics of residual stresses of welded joints are clarified by carrying out 3D non-steady heat conduction analysis and 3D thermal elastic-plastic FE-analysis. According to the results, the production mechanism of residual stresses at the welded joint of T-shape steel pipe is clarified. In this paper, circumferential stresses depended on thermal histories but axial and radial stresses were more dependent on geometrical shape than thermal histories. Residual stresses in the axial direction on the lower part of pipe member were tensile, controlled by geometrical shape. However, in case of middle part, residual stresses in all the directions were controlled by thermal histories.
For assessing residual lift of the steam pipe in fossil power plants, inspections and analysis are usually focused on the critical locations such as butt welds, elbows, Y-piece and T-piece of the steam pipes. In predicting the residual life of T-piece, determination of local stress near welds considering system load as well as internal pressure is not a simple problem. In this study, stress analysis of a T-piece pipe was conducted using a three-dimensional model which represents the T-piece of a domestic fossil power station. Elastic and elastic-creep analysis showed the maximum stress level and its location. Residual creep rupture life was also calculated using the stress analysis results. It was argued that the calculated life is reasonably same as the measured one. The stress analysis results also support life prediction methodology based on in-field replication technique.
Experiments on the yield strength of pipe connectors made of metal wire, joint pins, pole pipes, multi span insertion joints, and T-clamp joints used in pipe houses were conducted. The strength of connections of a pipe connector made of metal wire was adequate but it had a big difference according to loading direction. The collapse load of pipes connected with a joint pin was lower than that of single pipes. Also experimental results showed that pole pipes for use in a part of frame buried under the ground were safe, and the strength of multi span insertion joints should be increased. The resistant moment of T-clamp was about 13.7% of a single pipe.
Therefore as it is installed, its direction should be taken into consideration. The collapse load of pipes connected with a joint pin was lower than that of single pipes. In the part of frame member at which the great bending moment occurs, the use of joint pin should be avoided. Also experimental results showed that pole pipes for use in a part of frame buried under the ground were safe, and the strength of multi span insertion joints should be increased. The resistant moment of T-clamp was about 13.7% of a single pipe. In case that the external forces acting on left and right rafter are different. a unsymmetrical rotational force is produced at the multi span joint. If it is expected that the actual bending moment on the multi span joint is larger than resistant moment of T-clamp, a reinforcement to safely resist the rotational force is required.
This paper presents ductile fracture simulation of full-scale cracked pipe for nuclear piping materials using the cohesive zone model (CZM). The main objective of this study is to investigate the applicability of CZM to predict ductile fracture of cracked pipes with various crack shapes and under quasi-static/dynamic loadings. The transferability of the traction-separation (T-S) curve from a small-scale specimen to a full-scale pipe is demonstrated by simulating small- and full-scale tests. T-S curves are calibrated by comparing experimental data of compact tension specimens with finite element analysis results. The calibrated T-S curves are utilized to predict the fracture behavior of cracked pipes. Three types of full-scale pipe tests are considered: pipe with circumferential through-wall crack under quasistatic/dynamic loadings, and with 360° internal surface crack under quasi-static loading. Computational results using the calibrated T-S curves show a good agreement with experimental data, demonstrating the transferability of the T-S curves from small-scale specimen.
This study was carried out to(1) visualize the installation effect of an anti-wind net; (2) evaluate structural stability of typical anti-wind nets in Jeju; and (3) present the optimal specification of pipes in an anti-wind net for maximum instant wind velocities of 40 m/s and 45 m/s. The analyses were done for anti-wind nets with a mesh of 4 mm and a height of 3 m by using CFX and ANSYS. The results showed that the wind went down due to flow resistance when passing through an. anti-wind net. The anti-wind net with the supporting pipe being installed every two main columns was certainly unstable because the main column not sustained by the supporting pipe became cantilever. With regard to the position of a fixing point of the supporting pipe, von Mises stress on pipes was certainly increased as vertical positions of the supporting pipe were changed to be too lower or higher than an adequate position but there was little difference according to horizontal positions. The adequate vertical position was $2{\sim}2.5\;m$ high from the ground. For a maximum instant wind velocity of 40 m/s, the optimal specification of pipes was a main column of ${\varphi}48.1{\times}2.1$ t@2,000, cross beams(bottom and top) of ${\varphi}26.7{\times}1.9\;t$, cross beams(center) of ${\varphi}33.5{\times}2.1$ t/2ea and a supporting pipe of ${\varphi}31.8{\times}1.5$ t@2,000. In case of a maximum instant wind velocity of 45 m/s, the optimal specification of pipes with structural stability was a main column of ${\varphi}48.6{\times}3.25$ t@2,000, cross beams(bottom and top) of ${\varphi}26.7{\times}1.9\;t$, cross beams(center) of ${\varphi}48.1{\times}2.1$ t/2ea and a supporting pipe of ${\varphi}31.8{\times}1.5$ t@2,000.
The Pipe bending process using high frequency local induction heating is an advanced technique to bend pipes with a small bending radius and a large diameter. Even though the pipe bending process is a quite widespread engineering practice, it depends heavily upon trial and error method by field engineers with several years of experience. So it is necessary to develop an integrated methodology for optimum design of the pipe bending process. During hot pipe bending using induction heating, outward wall thickness of a pipe is thinned due to tensile stress and the reduction of wall thickness is not allowed to exceed 12.5%. Taguchi method and dynamic reverse moment is proposed to maintain a reduction ratio of thickness within 12.5%, when D/t ratio is high. An application of the proposed approach was compared with those of the finite element analysis and has good in agreements.
The pipe of CFRP for bicycle frame is designed and made for light weight of bicycle and then its suitability to bicycle frame is verified by comparing the other material i.e. steel, Cr-Mo steel, Al alloy pipe for bicycle frame. The pipe of CFRP is laminated to [0/$\pm$45]$_T$ and made by tape winding method and then its degree of light weight is evaluated by comparing the other pipes which is made by steel etc.
