FPGA integrated IEEE 802.15.4 ZigBee wireless sensor nodes performance for industrial plant monitoring and automation

  • The field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is gaining popularity in industrial automation such as nuclear power plant instrumentation and control (I&C) systems due to the benefits of having non-existence of operating system, minimum software errors, and minimum common reason failures. Separate functions can be processed individually and in parallel on the same integrated circuit using FPGAs in comparison to the conventional microprocessor-based systems used in any plant operations. The use of FPGAs offers the potential to minimize complexity and the accompanying difficulty of securing regulatory approval, as well as provide superior protection against obsolescence. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a new technology for acquiring and processing plant data wirelessly in which sensor nodes are configured for real-time signal processing, data acquisition, and monitoring. ZigBee (IEEE 802.15.4) is an open worldwide standard for minimum power, low-cost machine-to-machine (M2M), and internet of things (IoT) enabled wireless network communication. It is always a challenge to follow the specific topology when different Zigbee nodes are placed in a large network such as a plant. The research article focuses on the hardware chip design of different topological structures supported by ZigBee that can be used for monitoring and controlling the different operations of the plant and evaluates the performance in Vitex-5 FPGA hardware. The research work presents a strategy for configuring FPGA with ZigBee sensor nodes when communicating in a large area such as an industrial plant for real-time monitoring.

  • 2017년 7월 16일 집중호우로 인해 무심천 상류에 위치한 충청북도 청주시 상당구 남일면 고은리 655번지의 농경지 침수 피해가 발생하였다. 대상지역의 우안 제방에는 기존에 수동식 수문이 설치되어 있었으나 내구연한이 지나고 부식되어 수년전에 망실되었으며, 2017년 7월 홍수 이후 유사한 규모의 홍수가 발생 할 경우 대상지역은 홍수피해를 겪을 수밖에 없는 상황에 처해 있다. 이에 따라 홍수방어 시설인 전동식 수문을 설치하여 설치 전·후의 침수 피해를 분석하였다. 본 연구에서는 청주 수위관측소의 2017년 7월 15~16일 수위자료를 수집하여 수위-유량관계곡선식(Rating Curve)을 적용한 시간당 유량자료를 산정하였으며, 수문설치 지점인 고은리 655번지를 시점으로 하류 약 15.871km에 위치한 흥덕교까지 HEC-RAS 모형을 이용하여 홍수분석을 수행하였다. 무심천 우안 제방 내 수문이 설치되기 전과 후에 따른 대상지역의 제내지 침수구역 범위를 산정하여 비교 분석하였다. 측점은 96개의 횡단면으로 구성하였으며, 부정류 해석을 위한 경계조건으로 상류단 유입량, 측방 유입량 및 하류단 수위를 적용하였다. 홍수분석 결과 단면별 최대수위는 EL.41.92m~EL.66.29m의 범위를 나타내고 있으며, 적용 홍수에 따른 최대 유속은 3.17 m/s로나타났다. 수문설치 지점의 하천 횡단에서 발생하는 최고 수위는 EL.66.29m로 산정되었으며, EL.66.29m를 기준으로 전동식 수문이 설치되기 전과 후의 침수범위를 분석하였다. 설치 전 홍수분석 결과 제내지 침수구역의 면적은 141,309.3m2로 분석되었다. 전동식 수문을 설치함에 따라 대상지역의 제내지 침수 피해를 겪지 않은 것으로 분석되었다. 향후 전동식 수문과 IoT기술을 접목하여 지자체의 재난관리 시스템과 연동할 수 있다면, 유사한 침수피해를 최소화 하는데 기여할 것으로 판단된다.

  • In apartment type of housing, if resident's vehicle is registered in central control office and RFID TAG is issued, identification can be recognized from the time of entrance into parking lot and intelligent parking guide system can be activated based on the residents' profile. Parking Guide System leads a vehicle to the available parking space which is closest to the entrance gate of the vehicle's owner. And when residents forget where they parked their cars, they can query to the Parking Guide and Management System and get responses about the location. For the correct operation of this system, it is necessary to find out where the residents' cars have parked in real time and which lot is available for parking of other cars. RFID is very fancy solution for this system. RFID reader gathers the ID information in RFID TAGs in parked cars and updates the DB up to date. But, when non-residents' cars are parked inside apartment, RFID reader cannot identify them nor know the exact empty/occupied status of parking spaces because they don't react to RFID reader's query. So for the exact detection of empty/occupied status, we suggest the combined use of ultrasonic sensors and RFID. We designed a tree topology with intermediate data aggregators. The depth of tree is normally more than 3 from root (central office) to leaves (individual parking lots). The depth of 2 in tree topology brings about the bottleneck in communication and maintenance. We also designed the information fields used in RFID networks and Sensor Networks.

Impact of Sluice Gates at Stream Mouth on Fish Community (하구의 배수갑문 설치 유무가 어류군집에 미치는 영향)

  • Total of 325 estuaries in Korea were surveyed to analyze the effect of presence of sluice gate on the estuary environment and fish community from 2016 to 2018. Fish community in closed and open estuaries showed differences generally, and the relative abundance (RA) of primary freshwater species in the closed and migratory species in the open estuaries were high. The result of classifying species by habitat characteristics in closed and open estuaries showed similar tendencies at the estuaries of south sea and west sea. The relative abundances of primary freshwater species in the closed estuaries at the estuaries of south sea and west sea were the highest, but estuarine and migratory species were high in both closed and open estuaries at the estuaries of east sea. Primary freshwater species showed higher abundances in the closed estuaries with reduced salinity due to blocking of seawater since they are not resistant to salt. However, primary freshwater species in open estuaries at east sea was higher than that of the closed estuaries, which is considered to be the result of reflecting the characteristics (tide, sand bar, etc.) of the east sea. Korea Estuary Fish Assessment Index (KEFAI) was showed to be higher at open estuaries than closed in all sea areas (T-test, P<0.001), the highest KEFAI was observed in closed estuaries at south sea, and open estuaries in east sea. Fish community of closed and open estuaries in each sea areas showed statistically significant differences (PERMANOVA, East, Pseudo-F=3.0198, P=0.002; South, Pseudo-F=22.00, P=0.001; West, Pseudo-F=14.067, P=0.001). Fish assemblage similarity by sea areas showed a significant differences on fish community in closed and open estuaries at east sea, south sea, and west sea (SIMPER, Group dissimilarity, 85.85%, 88.36%, and 88.05%). This study provided information on the characteristics and distribution of fish community according to the types of estuaries. The results of this study can be used as a reference for establishing appropriate management plans according to the sea areas and type in the management and restoration of estuaries for future.

Studies on Fabrication and Characteristics of $Al_{0.3}Ga_0.7N/GaN$ Heterojunction Field Effect Transistors for High-Voltage and High-Power Applications (고전압과 고전력 응용을 위한 $Al_{0.3}Ga_0.7N/GaN$ 이종접합 전계효과 트랜지스터의 제작 및 특성에 관한 연구)

  • We report on the fabrication and characterization of $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}N$ HFETs with different barrier layer thickness which were grown using plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). The barrier thickness of $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}N$/GaN HFETs could be optimized in order to maximize 2 dimensional electron gas induced by piezoelectric effect without the relaxation of $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}N$ layer. $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}N$/GaN (20 nm/2 mm) HFET with 0.6 ${\mu}m$-long and 34 ${\mu}m$-wide gate shows saturated current density ($V_{gs}=1\;V$) of 1.155 A/mm and transconductance of 250 ms/mm, respectively. From high frequency measurement, the fabricated $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}N$/GaN HFETs showed $F_t=13$ GHz and $F_{max}=48$ GHz, respectively. The uniformity of less than 5% could be obtained over the 2 inch wafer. In addition to the optimization of epi-layer structure, the relation between breakdown voltage and high frequency characteristics has been examined.

A Study on the HEVC Video Encoder PMR Block Design (HEVC 비디오 인코더 PMR 블록 설계에 대한 연구)

  • HEVC/H.265 is the latest joint video coding standard proposed by ITU-T SG 16 WP and ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC29/WG 11. In H.265, pictures are divided into a sequence of coding tree units(CTUs), and the CTU further is partitioned into multiple CUs to adapt to various local characteristics. Its coding efficiency is approximately two times high compared to previous standard H.264/AVC. However according to the size of extended CU(coding unit) and transform block, the hardware size of PMR(prediction/mode decision/reconstruction) block within video encoder is about 4 times larger than previous standard. In this study, we propose a new less complex hardware architecture of PMR block which has the most high complexity within encoder without any noticeable PSNR loss. Using this simplified block, we can shrink the overall size the H.265 encoder. For FHD image, it operates at clocking frequency of 300 MHz and frame rate of 60 fps. And also for the test image, the Bjøntegaard Delta (BD) bit rate increase about average 30 % in PMR prediction block, and the total estimated gate count of PMR block is around 1.8 M.

xDSL 표준화동향

  • 지금까지 access network에서의 xDSL의 위치를 살펴보고 DSL, HDSL, ADSL 및 VDSL을 중심으로 기술 및 최근의 표준화동향을 살펴보았다. ITU의 조사에 따르면 97년 기준으로 전세계 약 8억가구에 copper access line이 연결되어 있고 그중의 70%이상이 가정에 연결되어 있는데 증가추세도 북미의 경우 년3.5%, 서유럽과 태평양연안의 경우 년4.5%의 성장율을 보이고 있어 2000년경에는 10억가구에 다다를 전망이다. 미국은 97년기준 약 1억가구에 1억6000만 copper access line이 연결되어 있는데 Yankee Group이 조사한 바에 따르면 2000년을 기준으로 3백만가구에 ADSL/RADSL/SDSL이 연결되고 관련 revenue는 10억달러에 이를것으로 추산하고 있다. 전세계 xDSL 시장규모를 미국의 5배정도로 보면 2000년경에는 전세계 twist pair의 2%정도에 xDSL이 연결되어 ADSL/RADSL/SDSL 관련 세계시장규모가 50억달러에 이르고 시장성장률은 30%에 이를 것으로 보고 있다. 현재 이러한 xDSL의 표준화작업은 3장에서 언급한 바와 같이 ANSI T1, ETSI에서 주로 주도되고 있으나 ITU-T, IEEE, ADSL Forum, ATM Forum, DAVIC 등 다른 group과 활발한 liasion meeting 을 통해서도 협력안을 마련하려 노력하고 있다. 예를 들어 DAVIC은 long range(1.5Km이상) PMD규격으로 ADSL을, mid range($300m\sim1.5km$) PMD규격으로 VDSL을, short range(300m이하) PMD규격으로 CAP방식의 FTTC를 각각구정하여 xDSL을 수용하고 있다. Microsoft의 CEO인 Bill Gates가 'Bandwidth bottleneck. No question. that's the biggest obstacle.'이라고 천명한 바와 같이 정보사회로의 진전에 있어 bandwidth는 시급히 해결되어야 할 문제이다. 정보사회의 꿈을 실현하고자 1993년부터 시작된 In-formation Infrastructure의 구축노력이 그동안 다양하게 시도되어왔으나 숱한 우여곡절과 실패를 겪은 telco등의 서비스업자들이 이제는 너무 큰 꿈을 쫓기보다는 internet이라는 현실적인 시장에서 xDSL과 cablemodem을 바탕으로 차근차근 새로 시작하고 있다고 생각된다. 그동안 ADSL, Forum을 중심으로한 일부 technology evangelist들은 전세계 8억가구에 깔려있는 copper twist pair를 경제적인 'the last mile solution'으로 활용할 것을 줄기차게 주장해왔다. 그동안 xDSL은 VDSL이라는 차세대 대안을 제시하여 interim solution이라는 울타리를 벗어나는데 성공하였을 뿐만 아니라 IDSL, SDSL, RADSL등의 새로운 고객지향적 xDSL을 개발하여 선택의 폭을 넓혀주었다. xDSL vendor들간의 치열한 경쟁속에서 값싼 xDSL 시스템들이 속속 등장하고 있으며, DSLAM[8]과 같은 switch solution도 제시되어 기존의 copper twist pair를 이용해 값싸게 다양한서비스를 제공해 줄 수 있는 기틀을 마련한 것이 오늘날의 xDSL의 성공요인이라고 생각된다. 일찌기 Bell Atlantic의 CEO Ray Smith가 'Yes. ADSL is an interim solution that will be with us for forty years.'라고 간파한대로 xDSL은 fiber가 좀 더 값싼 해결책이 될 때까지 당분간 access network에서 확고한 자리를 구축할 것으로 보인다. 최근들어 우리나라의 초고속정보통신망도 ADSL 과 VDSL을 바탕으로 FTTH으로 진화하는 전략을 수립한것은 우리의 현실과 세계적인 추세를 반영한 일이라 여겨진다.

Production and High Temperature Mechanical Properties of Ti-TiC Composite by Reaction Milling (반응밀링법에 의한 Ti-TiC 복합재료의 제조 및 고온 기계적 특성)

  • This study has been carried out to investigate the effect of reaction milling time on the synthesis of Ti- TiC p powder synthesised from the elemental titanium and activated carbon by reaction milling(RM), and the effect of vacu­u urn hot pressing temperature and TiC volume fraction on microstructural and mechanical properties of Ti- TiC com­p posite $\infty$ns이idated by vacuum hot pressing(VHP).T The elemental powders of titanium and activated carbon can be converted into Ti- TiC composite powders by reac­t tion milling for about 300hours, and were the average grain size of the as- milled powders has been measured to be a about $5\mu\textrm{m}$. The relative density of Ti- TiC VHPed above $1000^{\circ}C$ during Ihr is about 98% and the mechanical properties o of In- situ Ti- TiC composites are improved by TiC particle dispersed uniformly on titanium matrix. In order to investi­g gate thermal stability of Ti- TiC composite, after annealing at $600^{\circ}C$ for 80hrs micro- Vickers hardness have been per­f formed, and the values have been shown little changed as compared with those before annealing. The compact has b been tested on high temperature compressive test at $700^{\circ}C$ and has showed a high temperature compressive strength of 330MPa in a Ti- 20vol% TiC.

REGULATION OF PULPAL MICROCIRCULATION BY CALCITONIN GENE-RELATED PEPTIDE (Calcitonin Gene Related Peptide에 의한 치수미세순환 조절)

  • The purpose of this Study was to invest)gate the function or calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in regulatory mechanism of pulpal microcirculation with the aim of elucidating neurogenic inflammation. Experiments were performed on twelve cats under general anesthesia. CGRP was administered through the femoral vein to see the systemic Influence and through the external carotid artery to see the local effect. Sympathetic nerve to the dental pulp was stimulated electrically and pulpal blood flow (PBF) was measured with a laser Doppler flowmeter on the canine teeth to the drug administration. The paired variables of control and experimental data were compared by paired t-test and differences with p < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Systemic administration of CGRP $(0.3{\mu}g/ka)$ exerted decreases in systemic blood pressure and caused changes in PBF with an initial increase i311owed by decrease and a move marked second increase and decrease. Close intra-arterial (i.a.) injection of CCRP $(0.03{\mu}g/kg)$ resulted in slight PBF increase. The effect of CGRP resulted in no significant increase in PBF in the presence of $CGRP_{8-37}$. The electrical stimulation of the sympathetic nerve alone resulted in PBF decreases. The j.a. administration of CGRP following the electrical stimulation of the sympathetic nerve compensated the decreased PBF. Therefore, CGRP effectively blocked the sympathetic nerve stimulation-induced PBF decrease. Results of the present study have provided evidences that even though the local vasodilatory function of CGRP are weak, CCRP is effectively involved in blocking the vasoconstriction caused by sympathetic nerve stimulation in the feline dental pulp.
