KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School (KINGS) is dedicated to nurturing leadership-level professionals in nuclear power plant (NPP) engineering. KINGS have designed curriculum based on two philosophies. First, we balance aspects of discipline engineering, specialty engineering, and management engineering in the framework of systems engineering. Second, KINGS have designed the curriculum so that students can learn and experience the know-what, know-how and know-why level knowledge of NPP engineering and management. The specialization programs are opened during the 2nd year for 3 trimesters and those are a process of learning through practical project courses. The objectives of the specialization programs are to help students to learn the NPP life cycle technologies in highly structured and systematic ways. The systems engineer program (SEP) is one of the specialization programs. A practical case of the SEP which was applied to the project course for the NPP electric power system design education will be elaborated in this paper.
It is necessary to improve the time efficiency in the high power testing station because tests are mainly performed by high-priced equipment. Minimizing a human error through building the database of relevant standards is possible to expect reliable tests. And also, application program that is properly customized for the certain laboratory's power system will help test engineer to easily analyze the phenomenon that is happened in short-circuit and load switching tests. This paper introduces the several functions of the application program that is developed in order to realize these requirements.
The instrumentation system is the most important aspect of a flight test program. It is the means by which the objective of a flight test, the production of accurate, useful data, is achieved. An instrumentation system consists of everything required to sense, condition, and record all parameters of interest The task of a flight test engineer is to select a system that is adequate to obtain all needed data, but not complex, expensive, and heavy than the situation demands. In this paper, the primary factors that determine the design of an instrumentation system are discussed.

Vibration diagnosis of steam turbine generator is essential for safe operation. For a fast few decades, several data base systems for diagnosis of steam turbine generators have been developed and proved useful. However, there still remains a problem in using data base systems such that they require an expert engineer who has a deep insight or knowledg into the system. Moreover, such data base systems can not give any information if the input is not completely fit with data base. This paper presents an effective method for vibration diagnosis of steam turbine generators using fuzzy inference. The proposed method includes also a strategy to overcome the drawback of data base system such that one cannot obtain any information when the input is insufficient or not exact. A computer program is written to realize the entire procedure for the diagnosis. Three realistic problems are dealt with to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
The material analysis of an offshore structure is generally conducted in the contract design phase for the price quotation of a new offshore project. This analysis is conducted manually by an engineer, which is time-consuming and can lead to inaccurate results, because the data size from previous projects is too large, and there are so many materials to consider. In this study, the piping materials in an offshore structure are analyzed for contract design using a big data framework. The big data technologies used include HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System) for data saving, Hive and HBase for the database to handle the saved data, Spark and Kylin for data processing, and Zeppelin for user interface and visualization. The analyzed results show that the proposed big data framework can reduce the efforts put toward contract design in the estimation of the piping material cost.

The evolution of semiconductor manufacturing technology has accelerated the reduction of device dimensions and the increase of integrated circuit density. In order to improve yield within a short turn around time and maintain it at high level, a system that can rapidly determine problematic processing steps is needed. The statistical process control detects abnormal process variation of key parameters. Expert systems in SPC can serve as a valuable tool to automate the analysis and interpretation of control charts. A set of IF-THEN rules was used to formalize knowledge base of special causes. This research proposes a strategy to apply expert system to SPC in semiconductor manufacturing. In analysis, the expert system accomplishes the instability detection of process parameter, In diagnosis, an engineer is supported by process analyzer program. An example has been used to demonstrate the expert system and the process analyzer.
Background: Physical activity (PA) is ranked as a leading health indicator and the workplace is a key setting to promote PA. The purpose of this study was to examine how goal-setting and exercise self-efficacy (SE) during a health promotion program influenced PA level among Japanese workers. Methods: Using a cross-sectional study design, we surveyed 281 employees. The short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to assess PA level. Exercise SE was assessed using a partially modified version of Oka's exercise SE scale. Personal goals were assessed as the total numbers of "yes" responses to five items regarding "details of personal goals to perform PA". A mediational model was used to examine whether exercise SE mediates between the number of personal goals and PA level. Results: The mean age of the participants was 46.3 years, 76.2% were men, and the most common occupational category was software engineer (30.6%). The average PA level per week exceeded the recommended level in 127 participants (45.2%). One hundred and eighty-four participants (65.5%) set some form of concrete personal goal to perform PA. The relationship between the number of personal goals and PA level was mediated by exercise SE. Conclusion: Our study showed that exercise SE mediates goal-setting and increases PA. The results suggest that the components of PA promotion programs should be tailored to enhance participants' confidence in performing PA.
Wall thinning of carbon steel pipe components due to Flow-Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) is one of the most serious threats to the integrity of steam cycle piping systems in Nuclear Power Plants (NPP). Since the mid-1990s, secondary side piping systems in Korean NPPs have experienced wall thinning, leakages and ruptures caused by FAC. Korea Electric power Research Institute (KEPRI) and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., LTD. (KHNP) have conducted a study to develop the methodology for systematic pipe management and established the Korean Thinned Pipe Management Program (TPMP). To effectively maintain the integrity of piping system, FAC engineer should understand the criterions of the structural integrity evaluation and the safety margin assessment for the thinned pipe component. This paper describes the technical items of TPMP, and shows the example of the integrity evaluation and safety margin assessment for three thinned pipe component of a NPP.
Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) applications in the structural engineering field include concrete-FRP composite systems, where FRP components are either attached to or embedded into concrete structures to improve their structural performance. This paper presents the results of an analytical study conducted using finite element model (FEM) to simulate the behavior of three-points load beam reinforced with GFRP and/or steel bars. To calibrate the FEM, a small-scale experimental program was carried out using six reinforced concrete beams with $200{\times}200mm$ cross section and 1000 mm length cast and tested under three point bending load. The six beams were divided into three groups, each group contained two beams. The first group was a reference beams which was cast without any reinforcement, the second group concrete beams was reinforced using GFRP, and the third group concrete beams was reinforced with steel bars. Nonlinear finite element simulations were executed using ANSYS software package. The difference between the theoretical and experimental results of beams vertical deflection and beams crack shapes were within acceptable degree of accuracy. Parametric study using the calibrated model was carried out to evaluate two parameters (1) effect of number and position of longitudinal main bars on beam behavior; (2) performance of concrete beam with composite longitudinal reinforcement steel and GFRP bars.

This paper proposes an efficient method of On-Line Economic Load Dispatch(ELD) using Evolutionary Programming(EP) technique at KwangYang steel works. The economic operation of steel works is done by experienced engineer. So far, there is no formulation and algorithm of economic operation of steel works. In this paper, we propose the formulation and On-Line algorithm of economic operation of steel works. The EP technique is the kind of Evolutionary Computation(EC), which has become a candidate for many optimization applications due to its flexibility and efficiency. Based on the EP technique, the proposed algorithm is capable of not only solving the economic problem, but also obtaining the global optimal solutions within reasonable execution time. To validate our proposed approach, the algorithm is demonstrated on many sample systems and compared to actual values of steel works.
