  • Cyberbullying is a growing problem among adolescents and can have serious psychological and emotional consequences for the victims. In recent years, machine learning techniques have emerged as promising approach for detecting instances of cyberbullying in online communication. This research paper focuses on developing a machine learning models that are able to detect cyberbullying including support vector machines, naïve bayes, and random forests. The study uses a dataset of real-world examples of cyberbullying collected from Twitter and extracts features that represents the ideational metafunction, then evaluates the performance of each algorithm before and after considering the theory of systemic functional linguistics in terms of precision, recall, and F1-score. The result indicates that all three algorithms are effective at detecting cyberbullying with 92% for naïve bayes and an accuracy of 93% for both SVM and random forests. However, the study also highlights the challenges of accurately detecting cyberbullying, particularly given the nuanced and context-dependent nature of online communication. This paper concludes by discussing the implications of these findings for future research and the development of practical tool for cyberbullying prevention and intervention.

  • This study analyzed the science texts covering 'air pressure' and 'wind' in common with every curriculum from the syllabus period to the $7^{th}$ curriculum in terms of Systemic Functional Linguistics. Important findings revealed in this study were as follows: In the aspect of ideational metafunction, the texts including much scientific information were reduced by curriculum revision. Most forms of information were 'definition' and 'fact' rather than 'principle'. In the aspect of interpersonal metafunction, the gap between students and texts were getting closer and the social position of students were concerned gradually by curriculum revisions. In the aspect of textual metafunction, the ratios of technical terminology and notation were reduced, however the amount of texts in science textbooks were reduced as well. While the subject was presented in the early texts, it was omitted as time went on. The consistency of subject and theme were reduced in the $7^{th}$ curriculum remarkably.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the linguistic elements that can promote academic literacy in terms of content-based instructions for KSL learners. In order to study the characteristics of learning languages for subjects, focus was given to the framework of systematic functional linguistics that has been extensively used in ELL teaching and learning research in the United States and Australia. History, which is taught in all classes and classified as a required course, was the subject of analysis. From the history curriculum, the elementary school level texts "Social Studies 5-2" and "Social Studies 6-1" were chosen for the analysis. Based on the results, we can come to the following conclusions. First, history textbooks are divided into narrative and analytical explanatory sub-genres based on their content, and there are differences in the factors that need to be focused on to find the main information. Second, the vocabulary of history textbooks should focus on the use of verbs which comprehend material processes. Particularly, learners should pay attention to the differences in meaning between low-frequency expressions. We hope that the results of this study will have a positive effect on history subject learning for learners in the "Adaptive Korean Course" and will help establish direction in terms of building curriculum contents for KSL learners.

  • This study analyzed the written texts of textbook and the teacher's discourse explaining 'the relationship between quadratic functions and quadratic equations' in the 9th grade high school mathematics class. Data consisted of the lecture recordings and the textbooks were analyzed based on the Halliday's systemic functional linguistics. According to the results, the written texts of the textbook used lexico-grammatical strategies such as generalization using hyponomy of meanings, mathematical objectification through nominalization and materialization of meaning through change in themes to compose mathematical concepts. The textbook generalized from an example in the description of formulating mathematical concepts, and in this process the organizational interactions of discourse-semantic level and lexico-grammartical level appeared. On the other hand, the teacher's doscourse appeared the change in transitivity and the addition of the reasons and the process. Also the teacher used explanation process of formulating the relationship between quadratic functions and quadratic equations. The linguistic characteristics of the teacher were linguistic implication and omission of lexemes due to contextual ommission. And there was no use of structural lexico-grammatical resources that influence the discourse-semantic level. This results provide a new framework for analyzing mathematical discourse, and suggest the lexico-grammatical strategies that can be used to explain mathematical concepts by teachers in math classrooms.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse the descriptive characteristics of the label texts related to Earth Science at a science museum and a natural history museum in Korea. The data were collected from Korean National Science Museum and Seodaemun Natural History Museum. The analysis framework was modified according to the Systemic Functional Linguistics. As a result, characteristics of the labels are 1) mostly declarative sentences, 2) appropriate amount of scientific information, and 3) mainly 'facts'. Moreover, all of the text genre are 4) 'logical expositions'. Particularly in Korean National Science Museum, the labels present 5) more scientific words among the entire terminologies and 6) more than half subjects omitted or long nominalized. Those results may imply that the labels can lead one-way communication regarding the culture of science rather than two-way. This study presents the descriptive characteristics of the label texts to make educationally meaningful communication possible by building an open structure between visitors' own culture in everyday life and the culture of science.

  • A Discourse Analysis tool has been developed and has been applied in the cooperative group inquiry activities in order to derive the characteristics of elementary gifted students in science. We recorded and videotaped the whole group problem-solving processes where 4 elementary students worked together to solve given problems as a group for one year in a gifted education center attached to a university in Seoul. We analyzed recorded discourses using systemic functional linguistics with a focus on the structure of information and topic. The discourse analysis tool was developed with the cooperation of science education and gifted education experts. In discourse analysis, we focused on meaning development processes rather than grammatical analysis. Through application of newly developed discourse analysis tool, we confirmed that the tool is useful in understanding the characteristics of science-gifted elementary students. We also founded that the interaction between students has significant effects on problem-solving processes by comparing two students who showed contradictory features in the share of dialogue. In addition, the result suggested that we need to provide students with proper training for ways to communicate with others for effective science-gifted instruction.

  • This study aims to provide a cornerstone for 'Pedagogical Discourse Analysis' by connecting linguistic theory to science education practice. Pedagogical Discourse Analysis (PDA) focuses its attention on finding educational implications beyond description on classroom language. This study is specially aimed at PDA in terms of the textual aspect, which has not sparked interest in science classroom discourse. For this, we supposed that the framework of PDA composed of two axes: 'thematic flow' and 'information flow'. We presented a case of science classroom discourse in terms of PDA to investigate opportunities in its potential and utilities. This trial crosses the line of traditional science classroom discourse analysis, which has been inclined to linguistics theory. It will also suggest a new horizon for science classroom discourse in an educational context.

  • This paper reports the findings of a multimodal study conducted on 10 travel blog posts about Vietnam by seven British professional travel bloggers. The study takes a sociolinguistic view to tourism by seeing travel blogs as a source for linguistic and other semiotic materials while considering language as situated practice for the social construction of fundamental categories such as "human," "society," and "nation." It borrows concepts from Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics for interpersonal metafunction to develop an analytical framework to study how the co-occurrence of text and still images in these travel blog posts formulated the portrayal of Vietnam as a tourism destination and indicated the main sociolinguistic features of the blogs. The analysis of appreciation values and interactive qualities encoded in evaluative adjectives and still images show that Vietnam is generally portrayed as a country of identity and diversity. It provides tourists with positive experiences in terms of places of interest, food and local lifestyles and is cost-competitive. Strangerhood and authenticity are two outstanding sociolinguistic features exhibited in these travel blog posts. The findings of this study also underline the co-contribution of the linguistic sign, in this case evaluative adjectives, and the visual sign, in this case still images, as interpersonal meaning-making resources. To portray Vietnam, still images served as integral elements to evidence the credibility of verbal narrations. To unveil sociolinguistic characteristics of travel blogs, still images supported the linguistic realizations of authenticity and strangerhood on the posts, and in some case delivered an even stronger message than words. Not only does the study present a source of feedback from international travelers to tourism practice in Vietnam, but it also provides insights into multimodal analysis of tourism discourse which remains an under-researched area in Vietnam.

  • In order to analyze textbooks from a discursive approach, the purpose of this study is to structuralize an analytic framework based on previous literature review and apply it to analyzing the meanings and their syntheses developed by words and visual mediators appeared in the definition of graph in first-year middle school textbooks. The discursive approach consists of the communicational approach developed by Sfard(2008) and the systemic functional linguistics developed by Halliday(1985/2004). In this study, ideational meta-functions for ideational meanings and interpersonal meta-functions for interpersonal meanings were employed to analyze the meanings produced by words and visual mediators in textbooks, whereas textual meta-functions for textual meanings were used for analyzing the synthesized relationships between words and visual mediators. Results show that first, density in mathematical discourse was very high and subjects in mathematical activities were ambiguous in the ideational meanings of words, and behavior aspect was more emphasized than thinking aspect in the interpersonal meanings of words which request student participations. In the case of ideational meanings of visual mediators, there was a lack of narrative diagrams, whereas there were qualitative differences in the case of offer. Second, there was a need for promoting a wide range of diverse synthetic relationships between words and visual mediators for developing enriched mathematical meanings through the varying uses like specification, explanation, similarity, and complement. These results are so important that they provide a new analytic framework from a discursive approach to textbook analysis because not only words, but also visual mediators are analyzed as tools for producing meanings in mathematics textbooks and their synthetic relationships are also examined.
